The Bomber's Revenge
The project assigned by the professor was far too difficult. Lai Chuan Huang Quan and the ace of the mobile unit studied it for five whole days before finally coming up with several feasible solutions.
But before Yomi could elaborate, work from Nichiri TV started piling up again.
First, her manager took her through the alleys and streets of Tokyo and the surrounding cities to participate in a food-related variety show. Along the way, she even met Hagiwara Chisato. Then, her manager, looking mournful, muttered to her, "Can't you really break up? After you become a sensation, work for a year or two and then go solo. By then, you'll have both fame and fortune. You won't have to worry about not finding a handsome man. Isn't that great?"
But Lai Chuan Huang Quan just pinched his chin and remained silent for a moment: "But... I already have money and handsome men."
She frowned, looking genuinely troubled: "My boyfriend is the most popular guy in the Metropolitan Police Department. As for money... once I graduate from Tokyo University, I shouldn't have trouble finding a good job. Besides, my dad's salary is super high. He says he earned all of this for me, but he doesn't want me to squander it. He tells me to spend it however I want."
The agent choked, and after a moment of hesitation, asked, "Then why did you enter the entertainment industry? Was it for your dream?"
"To buy my boyfriend a sports car."
"...?"
The manager rubbed his temples in frustration, his expression as if he'd heard something foul. But he also deeply realized that Lai Chuan Huang Quan was indeed only suited to be a star, not an idol—the idol profession, which sells fantasies, would surely enrage fans if they knew she worked hard to collect their money to buy her boyfriend a car; they'd be so angry they'd storm into the Nissai building and overturn all the tables and chairs.
It's a pity that Lai Chuanhuangquan has such a strong brand image; if properly nurtured, he could have become a super popular idol.
But upon seeing Kenji Hagiwara's face, the manager had a different idea: "Why don't you two debut as a group? We're planning to imitate the Korean group Trouble Maker and launch a male-female duo that focuses on couples. You two would definitely be a hit, and you're already a couple!"
Then he was rejected again.
"I'm sorry, but police officers are not allowed to hold a second job."
Kenji Hagiwara smiled and said no, then took Yomi Lai's hand and walked away without looking back, leaving their manager chasing after them, heartbroken and trying to stop them. They were preparing for the bomber's second act of retaliation.
In a temporary meeting room in the basement of the Metropolitan Police Department building, the former police academy five-man team reunited, and Ida Wataru had successfully transferred to the Metropolitan Police Department's First Investigation Division a day earlier.
Date Wataru lowered his head in thought: "Knowing the bomber's identity beforehand through the future, I doubt anyone would believe it if I told them."
For Mr. Raikawa, who possesses a godlike perspective, and the police academy team who trust him, the bomber's case, like the Black Organization, is a sophistical topic.
The administrators remembered the bomber's face, but they had no evidence.
Four years ago, in the bombing incident that nearly reduced the entire riot police unit to ashes in flames, the Metropolitan Police Department failed to collect any useful, crucial evidence. The First Investigation Division also attempted to investigate through the network of contacts of the deceased bomber, but apart from a blackmail phone recording that had been altered, they found nothing.
Even if the administrator could print out the bomber's face and hand it over to the Metropolitan Police Department, what good would it do? They wouldn't have evidence to put him in jail, nor could they assign someone to monitor him 24/7. Since the bomber meticulously planned for four years out of revenge, he certainly wouldn't give up on launching a terrorist attack against the Metropolitan Police Department. The best way to deal with this mad dog is to lock him in metal bars for a long, long time, imprisoning him until he dies.
Matsuda Jinpei looked at Furuya Rei, who was sitting at the other end of the sofa: "If it's the Public Security Bureau, it shouldn't be a problem, right? After all, that's the Public Security Bureau's style of doing things..."
“As you say, I can ask the Metropolitan Police Department’s Public Security Bureau for assistance in the investigation. However…” Rei Furuya rested his chin on his hand and looked at the woman sandwiched between the two ace operatives of the Mobile Police Unit, “It seems there’s someone here who’s more suited to do this than me.”
Everyone present turned to look at Lai Chuan Huang Quan. She bit off the beef jerky in her mouth and showed everyone the phone she had been holding in her hand. The lit screen clearly displayed the words "[Calling]" and "[Damn Dad]".
Lai Chuan Huang Quan: "You stinky old man, did you hear me?"
There was a two-second silence on the other end of the phone before a slow voice said, "Send me the photo of the bomber, and I'll send someone to deal with it in a bit."
If it were Mr. Ryukawa, the manpower he could mobilize would far exceed that of Rei Furuya.
Kenji Hagiwara asked, "But when do you plan to make the arrest? If the bomber only made the good stuff and didn't even have time to carry out the threat, then his sentence will be significantly shortened. He might only be sentenced for endangering society or illegally possessing dangerous materials, and it might not even be possible to prove that he is related to the bombing case four years ago."
If a bomber has already begun carrying out terrorist threats, arresting them at that point will result in a longer sentence. But this also means we're gambling with people's lives.
Matsuda Jinpei crossed his arms, head bowed, and remained silent. From his own selfish perspective, he would have preferred the bomber to be convicted of a serious crime, with the longest possible sentence, ideally the death penalty. However, the death penalty in Japan is practically defunct; the prosecutor's office hasn't sentenced anyone to death for many years.
Matsuda Jinpei believed that Hagiwara Kenji must share the same thoughts, especially after having the memories of his reset past.
They watched helplessly as crimson blood slowly drained from Lai Chuan's body, and saw her leap from a high building like a butterfly with broken wings. They watched their teammates turn to ashes in the flames, and their beloved vanish like a gust of wind.
Painful emotions swirled around him, and he was filled with hatred.
A small bomb, sparks flying from the connection point of the neutral and live wires, consumed the lives of half the officers in the SWAT team. The red and blue wires bound the SWAT team's two aces, and also bound Raikawa Yomi.
It was this bomb, created to satisfy selfish desires, that burned down the homes of countless SWAT officers. Lai Chuanhuang was driven to suicide twice; how much better off were the families of those fallen officers?
A wire with a cross-sectional width of only a few millimeters has borne the weight of too many lives.
I wish I could beat the bomber to a pulp and make him spend the rest of his life in jail.
But the stark reality is just that contradictory.
No one died in the bombing, meaning the trial will likely be lighter than expected. A harsher sentence would require more serious consequences.
"Oh."
Kenji Hagiwara sneered, leaned back on the sofa, and looked up at the ceiling.
However, neither Hagiwara nor Matsuda, no matter how deep their hatred, would ever put the entire city of Tokyo on the fire just to vent their anger. How could they possibly allow even more serious consequences to occur for their own selfish desires?
They would suppress the surging desires in their hearts, compress their resentment into their lungs, and put themselves after the people.
—Everything for justice.
Even if it means sacrifice;
Even if it means throwing oneself into darkness;
Even if it means sacrificing one's personal feelings.
Because they are police officers.
The word "justice" sounds simple, but sometimes it weighs heavier than life itself, suffocating people. But someone always has to shoulder this heavy burden and tear open the curtain of darkness.
Matsuda Jinpei slowly exhaled a breath of stale air: "Let's make an arrest while he's trying to install it. Only in this way can we minimize casualties."
As for the hatred surging like a tsunami in his heart... let's forget about it.
Morofushi Kagemitsu chimed in, "I agree. If we arrest him before he's finished manufacturing it but hasn't installed it yet, he might only have to wait a few years before being released. He'll definitely retaliate again then and launch even more insane bomb attacks. But if we arrest him during the installation process, we can extend his sentence."
He frowned and gave a wry smile: "I'm sorry, I'm afraid I can't help this time."
Rei Furuya patted Hiromitsu Morofushi on the shoulder: "There's nothing we can do about it. Although Shuichi Akai has already arranged for your death to look real, the organization doesn't seem to be entirely at ease and is secretly looking for clues related to you."
He stood up: "Then, I'll leave the task of sending someone to investigate the bomber to you, Mr. Ryukawa."
Mr. Lai Chuan on the other end of the phone: "Okay, I'll arrange it right away."
The police acted swiftly, locating the bomber and placing him under covert surveillance within days. However, his rapid discovery was partly due to his own overconfidence, his disdainful view of the police as useless incompetent individuals.
After receiving news from Kazami Yuya that the bomber had left, Furuya Rei, along with the other four members besides Morofushi Kagemitsu, broke into the bomber's registered residence. They searched the room and found numerous bomb design blueprints and plan sketches. Hagi and Matsu exchanged a glance and quickly photographed all the materials with their phones. Before the bomber returned, they restored the room to its original state and escaped through a window.
Back at the police headquarters, Kenji Hagiwara printed out all the photos he had taken and huddled in a corner with Jinpei Matsuda to study them.
Yomi Laichuan couldn't understand the mystery-related topics that Rei Furuya and the others were discussing. She rested her chin on her hands and remained silent for a moment before squeezing into the middle of the Mobile Squad Aces to join in learning about bomb types and disarming procedures.
About ten minutes later, Furuya Rei spoke up: "Matsuda, how's it going on your end?"
In the corner, Kenji Hagiwara and Jinpei Matsuda sat cross-legged on the floor. Yomi Raikawa, who disliked kneeling, was now completely draped over Kenji Hagiwara's back, pressing him down so much that he bent over. By this time, the three of them had gone through all the design sketches in their hands and had a general idea of what to do with them.
Kenji Hagiwara grasped Yomi Raikawa's hand, which was wrapped around his neck and hanging down to his chest, before slowly saying, "A time bomb, a remote control device, a mercury column—this guy has multiple detonation devices installed in one bomb. If he hadn't gone astray, he could be considered a talent."
Matsuda Jinpei snorted coldly: "Too bad he's a complete scumbag."
Rei Furuya pondered for a moment, then said in a deep voice, "We've seen his messy draft of the answer. If nothing unexpected happens, the first bomb site should be Ferris wheel number 72 in Beika City Shopping Plaza."
Upon hearing this, Matsuda Jinpei glanced at Yomi Yorikawa subconsciously, then lowered his gaze: "It's exactly the same location as I remember. So the second bomb must be at Beika Central Hospital."
But Rei Furuya gave an unexpected answer: "No, based on the existing clues, he chose three locations: Beika Central Hospital, Beika City Central Hospital, and the office building in Beika Town, 2nd Street."
Date Kou frowned: "They're all places with dense crowds."
Just as the group was pondering a plan, the administrator suddenly spoke up, providing an important clue: "In the past few cycles, the location of the second bomb has changed, but one thing remains constant. The bomber first went to the second location to plant the bomb before going to the Ferris wheel."
Upon hearing this, several people said in unison, "So we can arrange for people to stake out these locations, take the bombs away after he plants them, dismantle them, and then deal with the bombs inside the Ferris wheel."
[Author's Note]
There will be red envelopes in the comments section of this chapter! The deadline is 8 PM on November 10th. Love you all!
This book is almost finished. After rescuing Matsuda, the main story will end. Then there will be a sweet slice-of-life side story, probably about ten chapters. After the sweet daily life story is finished, there will be Matsuda's "what if" and the sandwich story's "what if".
