Chapter 104 Madness and Chaos
It had rained last night, and the uneven road was filled with small puddles. Rong Yi's boots splashed water as he stepped on them.
There are many windows on the upper wall of the alley. Hearing the noise, someone opened a window.
Because he was looking up against the light, Rong Yi couldn't see what the person who opened the window looked like. He could only make out that the upper body of the person was a child. After looking at them for a few seconds, he quickly closed the window.
This alley is exceptionally long.
“It seems to be a place similar to a slum,” Wei Yanqing said.
The walls here are old, yellowed and peeling, and there are graffiti drawn by children in the lower places. At first, they were sunflowers and the like, but later they were replaced by bright red figures. The original paintings can only be faintly seen through these.
"It doesn't have that strange feeling outside."
Rong Yi couldn't quite articulate her feelings, but anywhere else she always felt a slight unease, she felt none of that here.
"Awooo—Awooo awooo..."
The strange low shout came from Rong Yi's right. She turned her head and saw a person huddled behind the door. When he saw her turn around, he quickly waved and said, "Come here, over here."
Rong Yi shook Wei Yanqing's sleeve.
“I saw it,” Wei Yanqing said.
Based on the principle that they weren't afraid of ghosts, they had no reason to be afraid of people, so the two walked into the house that the other had invited them into without hesitation.
As soon as they entered, the man who had been greeting them carefully closed the door behind him. "Follow me."
The two followed him, and after several twists and turns, their eyes were suddenly opened.
"This is my basement, please have a seat." The man who spoke had medium-length hair tied back with a rubber band, and a stubble beard, but his handsome features were still evident.
The basement has a simple layout with two rooms. The area where they were located was a narrow living room, and Rong Yi could touch the ceiling with a slight raise of his hand.
The man had already sat down and poured himself a glass of water, which he drank in large gulps.
After sitting down, Wei Yanqing rested his elbows on his knees and clasped his hands together. "Who are you?"
Rong Yi was still looking around when he heard this and nodded, saying, "Yes, who are you, and why did you let us in?"
The man grinned. "My name is Yan Huaqing, the head of the Resistance Alliance in Baozhai District, Fengzhou City. You can call me Xiao Hua."
Rong Yi: "..."
Wei Yanqing: "..."
Yan Huaqing showed no embarrassment whatsoever. “We all saw your performance on that awful program last night, and that’s why headquarters specifically asked me to find you and make contact.”
"The Rebel Alliance? No, are you saying the ghost program is a description or an insult to them?" Rong Yi discovered the key point.
"Of course I'll curse them." Yan Huaqing's attitude was unwavering. "Those things have turned the world into this mess, how could I not curse them?"
So he's a normal person after all.
"That's not the point." Yan Huaqing waved his hand. "You weren't on the organization's contact list before, so I'll introduce you to the Resistance Alliance first."
Rong Yi reached out to stop him from continuing, "We know what this alliance does just from its name. We're more interested in ghosts, or what exactly happened in this world."
Yan Huaqing was stunned. "Ghosts?"
Wei Yanqing nodded with a serious expression and began to lie, "That's right, neither of us remembers anything from before. After waking up yesterday, we found that the world had changed drastically. There were endless human sacrifices and ghostly disturbances on the road, which was completely different from the normal world we remembered."
Whether the other party believed it or not, Wei Yanqing didn't care.
Yan Huaqing was stunned. He knew something was off between the two, but he hadn't expected it to be this bad.
Rong Yi could touch ghosts, and Wei Yanqing could kill ghosts from a distance. These two were not normal people. I had prepared myself, but I still couldn't suppress my shock when I heard this.
·
"It wasn't like this before. There were no ghosts back then, and everyone lived normal lives. Until two years ago, human sacrifice incidents started happening all over the world." Yan Huaqing recounted the process by which the world has become what it is today.
"The human sacrifice incident was heinous. At the time, in order to prevent such things from happening again, the country established strict laws, and those caught would not be tolerated, but it still couldn't stop it." Yan Huaqing said with a dejected expression, "Later, several large-scale sacrifices occurred, with more than a thousand people being buried alive in each sacrifice. That happened a year ago."
"After that, everything changed..."
"People developed an abnormal worship of ghosts, and countless people sacrificed their relatives and children in rituals. At that time, the air was filled with the smell of blood, but not everyone was affected, such as the members of our alliance."
In just a few minutes, the process of how the world has changed is explained.
"Of course, those ghosts would also kill people, but those people never felt scared; they just knelt and worshipped like madmen."
Rong Yi remained silent. Wei Yanqing asked, "Then do you know about the Ghost Lord?"
"The Ghost Lord?" Yan Huaqing was even more confused than they were. "I know about the Ghost King of Baozhai District, but I don't know about the Ghost Lord. Ghosts communicate differently from humans, and the information we can obtain is very limited."
In fact, it's not just limited, it's almost non-existent.
"From what you're saying, it seems there's a different Ghost Lord for each district." Rong Yi recalled the Ghost Lord of Fuling that he had heard of.
Yan Huaqing nodded, "Pretty much. A city has several districts, and so does a number of ghost lords. They usually operate in their respective territories. Ghosts who can kill people in these territories are their subordinates. As for the ghost master, although I haven't heard of him, he is most likely the most powerful ghost in the city."
“For example, the program you appeared on last night was a sacrificial ceremony of the Jin Ning Ghost King in Baozhai District,” Yan Huaqing said. “Once his subordinates report the situation, you’re definitely going to have something to do tonight.”
Rong Yi thought his next sentence would be to find them a safe place, but Yan Huaqing said, "We'll split up later, and you can come back to meet me here after this is over."
Rong Yi: "..."
"You call yourselves the Resistance Alliance, so how exactly do you resist?" Wei Yanqing asked, curious about this.
When asked about this, Yan Huaqing sighed, "There's nothing we can do. We're still looking for effective methods, but ghosts are invisible and formless. Guns and even missiles have no effect on them. However, we've discovered something: they don't appear when there's thunder, and they even quickly dodge it."
What kind of discovery is this?
Rong Yi: "They definitely won't come out. Ghosts are afraid of being struck by lightning."
Yan Huaqing's eyes lit up instantly, and she excitedly rushed in front of Rong Yi: "What did you say? Ghosts are afraid of thunder?"
Rong Yi looked at Wei Yanqing with a puzzled expression.
“Ghosts are naturally afraid of lightning,” Wei Yanqing said. “Have you never tried attacking them with electricity?”
Yan Huaqing hesitated for a moment, then lowered his head: "Of course we want to try more attack methods, but we have limited manpower. Ghosts can't be summoned and dismissed at will. Many times we can't get the experimental process and can only see the mutilated corpses of our companions all over the ground. In such cases, we will consider the experiment a failure."
Ordinary humans cannot imprison souls and allow them to conduct experiments at will; if you want to try, you must be prepared to pay the price with your life.
