Chapter 24 Ultimate Summit Climb
Before Rong Yi left, the woman pointed him in a direction and said that most of the houses there were unclaimed, and whether or not someone could move in depended entirely on people scrambling for them every day.
As Rong Yi walked, he didn't forget to observe each room he passed. The facilities inside were much better than on the first floor. At least the most basic room wasn't just an iron bed with a sheet on it.
It's a little past 1 p.m. now, still a long way from midnight.
Rong Yi casually entered a room and looked around, finding that there were indeed no signs of habitation.
I took off my mask and tried to breathe. The air quality here wasn't as foul as on the first floor; it was normal.
Since the house was unoccupied, the sheets on the bed were messy and wrinkled. After thinking for a moment, she didn't sit there, but instead took out the small stool she had asked Shao Yuting for.
I took out the cooked food I bought from the bearded shop owner. The owner gave me a generous portion, with vegetables and meat piled up next to the tightly packed rice.
She finished the whole box of food in less than five minutes. After having a simple meal last night and this morning, she was finally able to have a proper meal now.
We weren't quite satisfied after finishing our meal, so we ordered a steak to finish off, which finally made us feel completely full.
The aroma of food attracted some people, some of whom knew she had a gun. They glanced at her cautiously and then hid behind the wall.
Some messages hadn't been received. Upon seeing Rong Yi, they saw him as if he were a big fat sheep. They put their hands in their pockets and came in, saying, "Where did this newbie come from? This is not a place for you to sit!" They even kicked the iron bed next to them with a defiant air.
It seemed like summer inside the tower. Rong Yi's clothes kept him cool, but the sweaty smell of the people in front of him hit him like the back of his hand.
Luckily, she had already finished eating, otherwise it would have affected her eating.
"Hand over everything you have on you, or don't blame us for stripping you naked."
Upon hearing this, the people around him laughed.
In Rong Yi's eyes, all she could see was this person's mouth opening and closing, with saliva even splattering out. She looked disgusted, tilted her head back, and clenched her fist.
Seeing her clench her fist, the boastful man laughed arrogantly, "Look at this little wench, she wants to hit me? Come on, I'll stand right here..."
Before he could finish speaking, Rong Yi pulled his fist back to gather strength, then used his shoulder blade and elbow to deliver a punch.
Before the man could even see what was happening, the gloved fist was already at his face, and crack—in that instant, he heard the sound of his nose breaking.
The people who were laughing and joking nearby were hoping that this man would grab Rong Yi's fist and then tease him with them, but instead, the tall man fell straight down and fainted.
The person who fell had a broken nose, and blood spurted from his nasal cavity, covering his mouth and jaw with blood.
Rong Yi glanced at the gloves, frowning in displeasure; they were still stained with blood. He looked coldly at the others in the room and said, "Drag him out."
The stunned group immediately obeyed the order. Just kidding, this guy dared to come looking for trouble because he had some strength. He was knocked down by the woman in front of him with one punch, so Rong Yi was obviously not an ordinary person.
They grabbed the unconscious man by both arms and dragged him out like a dead dog, thoughtfully dragging him a little further away so as not to get Rong Yi's eyes dirty.
·
There is more than one Jingtian Tower. It was built uniformly by dividing up the area by aristocratic families. It is used to imprison criminals. There are no guards inside. Resources are simply dropped from the top of the tower at fixed times.
Meanwhile, Rong Yi wasn't the only one rushing up the tower; almost every stairwell entrance was filled with people coming up. Some chose to come up with minimal effort, while others opted for a violent charge.
Rong Yi finally found some peace and quiet. She walked out of the room and looked around. Compared to the red brick buildings downstairs, the walls here were all painted.
After finishing her meal, she intended to ask someone about the situation upstairs.
This time, Rong Yi found two teenagers. Although the woman guarding the gate knew a lot, she was a member of a gang, so the information she gave would have been selective. It would be better to find non-gang members.
The two children are twins, a boy and a girl. When Rong Yi waved to them, the older brother stood in front of his younger sister.
She first took out a bag of sausages, indicating that she would exchange information for benefits.
Rong Yi had the two children sit on the edge of the bed, while he sat on a small stool.
"How much do you know about the people upstairs?" he said, tearing open the bag of sausages. "Eat up. If the information you give me is useful, I'll reward you."
The younger sister's first reaction was to look at her brother. Only after her brother nodded did she reach out to take the food. The brother then offered it to his sister and answered Rong Yi's question.
"There's not much difference between the 29th and 20th floors, except for the amount of resources available and the fact that they don't have a rule about closing at midnight. Did you come from the first floor?"
Rong Yi nodded, "That's right, I have a mission and I need to reach the designated floor within the specified time."
There's nothing to hide about this. Saying it won't harm me, and it will even give these people some room for imagination.
After hearing this, the boy continued, "Every 10 floors of the Jingtian Tower will change. In addition to the increasing difficulty of survival, monsters will be released from time to time above the 30th floor."
This is interesting. "What kind of monster?"
The boy glanced at the doorway and, seeing no one was there, continued, "They're similar to the monsters released after midnight, and they come in many different kinds. If you kill a monster, the tower will give you rewards, including weapons, medicine, and even strange injections."
Rong Yi slowly crossed his arms and cast a probing look at the young man, "You're only on the 20th floor, how do you know so much?"
Of course, the woman guarding the gate might also know these things, but she didn't reveal anything in her words. On the contrary, the boy seemed to know quite a lot.
The girl took a small bite of the sausage, chewing it slowly and carefully, reluctant to swallow it. She then handed the sausage to her brother, hoping he would have some too. The boy pushed his sister's hand away and gently shook his head.
“My brother and I originally lived on the 34th floor. Our father lived on that floor, but he died two years ago. I was too young, so I had to take my sister downstairs to ensure our survival.”
Rong Yi understood, loosened his arms, and nodded, resting his chin on his hand. "I see. You can continue." His eyes fell on the satchel the boy was carrying.
She didn't just randomly pick two children to ask. First of all, the boy looked to be no more than fourteen or fifteen years old, but he was sturdy and had a hint of menace in his eyes. His sister was also neatly dressed, with clear but wary eyes, clearly showing that she knew how to survive.
That satchel probably contained supplies the boy inherited from his father, including firearms; otherwise, he couldn't have survived for two years here with just his fists.
"The tower is a testing ground for aristocratic families. Not every prisoner is sent to the first floor. It is basically distributed according to their own strength. It is strange that you were able to come up from the first floor. My father said that the testing ground is a consensus among all high-ranking families, and no one will overturn it."
Rong Yi didn't answer his question, after all, he wasn't from this world and couldn't explain it. "You said that new people are put into each floor, no wonder."
She said that if everyone were to live on the first floor, the entire tower would become hierarchically fixed, so why would people still have to fight for a place to live every day?
"Yes, and apart from the newcomers on the first floor, all the newcomers on other floors know the dangers of the early morning, so rooms are always in short supply."
Rong Yi: "Continue talking about what happened upstairs. Do you still remember the characteristics of those monsters?"
“I have a booklet, a collection of illustrations drawn by my father. If you want to see it, you’ll have to pay me. I’ll pay you now.” The boy and his sister were born inside the tower, and the ability to judge character was a basic survival skill. He could tell that Rong Yi was not a man of his word or a bloodthirsty person, which was why he dared to mention the booklet.
