Chapter 20: A Prank of Self-Inflicted Injury

I thought Liu Fengming would quiet down for a while after that day, but less than five days later, he came back.

It happened to rain that day, and since the village hadn't had any paved roads yet, the simple dirt roads became muddy and impassable.

When Liu Fengming appeared, it was still raining. Whether he did it on purpose or not, he didn't use an umbrella, his hair was soaked, his clothes were half-dry, and his feet were covered in mud so thick that you couldn't even tell what his shoes originally looked like.

It was evening, and Lu Jun was at home. When he saw Liu Fengming, he rushed up to beat him up without saying a word. It was only because Lu Yongkang stopped him that he didn't actually start a fight.

The man, with a stern face, told him to get lost, but this time Liu Fengming changed his tactics and knelt down before Lu Yongkang without saying a word.

The old man was so frightened that he almost slipped and lost his footing!

Liu Fengming grabbed Lu Yongkang's trouser leg and began to plead, "Dad! Please, for the sake of my marriage with Xiaoying, let me see her!"

Lu Jun was about to throw a punch at him when the man shrank back in fright.

Lu Yongkang stopped him in time, and said in a low voice, "Son, I know you want to beat him, and I want to beat him too."

"But we can't make the first move, or we'll suffer the consequences!"

Lu Jun knew this too, so he could only endure it, glaring fiercely at the man kneeling on the ground, "Who do you think you are, daring to come see my little sister! If you don't want to suffer, get out of here! If you stay any longer, don't blame me for being impolite!"

The commotion had already disturbed Lu Ying, who had gone upstairs. The woman, standing on the second floor, saw Liu Fengming kneeling outside the door and her brows furrowed instantly.

"Why is this person so persistent!"

Liu Fengming glanced up and saw her too. He instantly stood up and tried to rush through the door, shouting, "Xiao Ying! Xiao Ying! Let me in, I have something to tell you!"

Lu Jun reached out and stopped the person, shoving them aside without any mercy. "Didn't you hear me tell you to get lost?! Do you really want me to hit you?!"

Liu Fengming was pushed back two steps. His face contorted in the darkness for a moment, then quickly turned into a sorrowful expression.

"Father, elder brother! Please let me see Xiaoying. I really have something to say to her."

Lu Yongkang didn't even bother to pay attention to him, and said with a straight face, "Say what you have to say here. If Xiaoying can't hear me, I, as her father, will pass it on to her."

Liu Fengming pulled this stunt today just to see Lu Ying. If he can't even see her, how can he coax Lu Chuqing to go with him?

The man's face instantly showed difficulty. "Father, this..."

Lu Jun was already fed up and interrupted the man, pushing him towards the door, saying, "If you're not going to talk, then get out. Who are you trying to fool by staying here and putting on this act of suffering!"

Seeing that the man was really going to get rough, Liu Fengming didn't care about any more of a ploy, and started shouting at the top of his lungs, "Xiao Ying! Xiao Ying!"

"We've been husband and wife for a while! I'm still Jingjing's father! Please let me in to see my daughter!"

He disregarded his pride and continued shouting at the top of his lungs, "Jingjing! Jingjing! Come out and see your father! Your father didn't have an umbrella and he's soaked. Don't you care about your father?"

"Jingjing! Your grandma is sick and keeps saying she wants to see you. Why don't you come back with your dad to see her? Have you forgotten how good your grandma is to you? She even left you some candy when you went back for Chinese New Year..."

The man kept making noises, and Lu Yongkang was getting embarrassed by him. He was about to step forward and drive the man away.

Lu Ying had already brought Lu Chuqing to the main gate.

Lu Chuqing's biggest self-loathing trait is that she is too weak.

Even though she knew Liu Fengming was just saying that to trick her into going to the Liu family, she still let Lu Ying take her out.

Liu Fengming was a scoundrel. Old Man Liu favored boys over girls and disliked her intensely. Throughout her miserable and dark childhood in her previous life, the only person who treated her well was Old Woman Liu.

She still remembered when she returned to the Liu family with Liu Fengming in her previous life. Old Mrs. Liu happily took her little hand and led her to a small side room, where she pulled out a dirty red plastic bag from an old wooden box.

With his withered hands, he struggled to untie the knot that had been tied several times. After finally managing to untie it, there was another layer of white plastic bag inside. He then untied that layer... Finally, after untying five or six layers, he pulled out a small piece of cloth the size of an egg from the very bottom.

The cloth was wrapped with strips of cloth several times. The old woman untied it little by little, took off the strips of cloth, and lifted the cloth to reveal four or five candies inside. Because it had been so long, the syrup had already seeped out of the candy wrapper.

The old woman had a big smile on her face. Her thin face was full of wrinkles, and she had lost all her molars. She happily took the little girl's hand, took out all the candies from the candy box and put them in the girl's hand, whispering to her.

"Jingnier, this milk was specially saved for you during the New Year. Quickly pack it up and eat it yourself, don't let your brother and the others see it!"

At that time, Lu Chuqing was innocent and unaware of what those few candies overflowing with syrup meant.

She only remembered that Lu Ying had taught her to share food if she had any.

So she only took one, then looked at Granny Liu, whom she didn't know very well but seemed to like her, and said, "Grandma, one is enough for me, you can share the rest with my brothers!"

She didn't remember how many older brothers and sisters the Liu family had, and she rarely went back to the family. She also didn't remember how her older brothers and sisters would snatch anything good from each other.

After saying that, Granny Liu's face changed, and she insisted on putting the candy into her small pocket, saying, "Your brother and the others have already eaten it during the New Year. This milk was specially saved for you. Take it and eat it secretly by yourself."

At that time, she didn't understand why she had to sneak around to eat candy. So, after leaving the side room, Old Man Liu asked her with a fierce face why her grandmother had called her back inside. Without warning, she said that her grandmother had given her candy.

Old Mrs. Liu then added, "It's the leftovers Shao Cong left by the door a couple of days ago. I couldn't bear to throw it away, so I picked it up, washed it, and wrapped it up."

At that time, Lu Chuqing was also puzzled as to why Granny Liu was lying. Lu Ying had taught her that children should not lie.

But at that moment, Old Liu's face frightened her, and she was too scared to utter a sound.

Later, Liu Fengming went out to work, and she lived with the elderly couple in the Liu family.

She gradually came to understand all the things she didn't understand before.

Even later, when she recalled the time when she first went to the Liu family with Liu Fengming, she felt that she had been stupid and foolish at the time.

But in fact, she was not wrong, and Lu Ying's teaching was not wrong either.

It's because the Liu family is too poor, and the people are too calculating. They're cowardly to outsiders, but they have a good reason to harm their own family.

She was targeted by her aunts and uncles a lot during those years, and her so-called brothers and sisters took pride in bullying her, even deliberately bullying her in front of their friends, as if that was how they could show how powerful they were.

Lu Chuqing knew she was soft-hearted and couldn't bring herself to be ruthless, so she never intended to go back for revenge in the first place.

It wasn't just because she was a little girl now, but also because of all the kindness that Granny Liu had shown her in her past life, and even more so because she didn't want to waste her time on a bunch of stagnant and unhealthy people.

But Liu Fengming insisted on coaxing her back, and this time he even used Old Lady Liu as a pretext.
