One autumn rain brings one chill.
After last night, Lu Chuqing felt a chill when she woke up in the morning. She put on her school uniform jacket and zipped it up as she went down the stairs.
"Good morning. There's breakfast on the table. You can eat first."
A deep, boyish voice came from the kitchen, and Lu Chuqing stared wide-eyed at it.
Wearing the same school uniform, Xi Qingxu was seen wearing a pink floral apron that Xi Jun wore exclusively, and was using a spatula to scoop out fried eggs.
"Why are you making breakfast? Where's Uncle Xi?"
Seeing the fried eggs and toasted bread on the table, Lu Chuqing asked in confusion.
It wasn't that she felt Xi Jun should make breakfast, but since the man moved in, she and Lu Ying hadn't cooked in the kitchen.
The girl took a bite of bread, just as Xi Qingxu poured warm milk and handed it to her from the open kitchen side.
“They didn’t come home all night,” the boy explained.
Lu Chuqing's eyes widened even more, and she exclaimed in shock, "What?! They didn't come back?!"
Xi Qingxu didn't expect such a big reaction from her; even the milk she was holding swayed slightly in the cup.
“Last night, very late, Uncle Shi called back and said he had been chatting with a friend for a long time, and the rain was getting heavier, so he stayed at a hotel nearby.”
It was past midnight when Xi Qingxu was startled by her phone ringing. Seeing that it was Xi Jun calling, she quickly answered.
The man used all those same excuses, and even told him to remember to get up early to prepare breakfast for him and Lu Chuqing.
After the rain, the weather turned cool, so he had to remind the girls to wear coats, and then reassure them not to be nervous about the exam.
Xi Qingxu was still a little groggy when he woke up. He saw that it was already three or four in the morning when the man suddenly called him back, rambling on and on.
He was usually calm, but for a moment he felt that Xi Jun seemed to have something wrong with him.
He leaned down, placed the milk on the table, and said to the girl, "They'll be back this morning."
Looking at the expressionless boy, Lu Chuqing suddenly asked, "Why do you think they didn't take a taxi back, but instead chose to stay in a hotel?"
After hanging up the phone, Xi Jun didn't sleep much. Xi Qingxu was slow to react at the moment. After thinking for a moment, he said, "Taking a taxi can only take you to the entrance of the community. They should finish very late. It would be troublesome for them to call me to bring the umbrella later. It's better to just stay in a hotel nearby."
Lu Chuqing glanced at him twice, pulled out a chair and sat down. "Alright, hurry up and finish eating so we can go to school. It's getting late."
Xi Qingxu didn't say anything more, and took her fried egg to the table and sat down.
Glancing at the boy who was focused on eating breakfast, Lu Chuqing muttered, "Only a naive kid like you would believe such a flawed excuse."
Xi Qingxu was still a little dizzy and didn't hear what she said clearly.
Seeing the girl eating quickly, he didn't say anything and also sped up his pace.
I took two exams in the morning. At noon, I had lunch with Qu Fusang at the cafeteria. On the way back to the classroom, the girl asked me about her National Day holiday.
Lu Chuqing thought for a moment, and Lu Ying didn't reveal any plans. If there was nothing else, she would be rushing to finish her drawings.
So she said, "I guess I'll just study at home."
Qu Fusang exclaimed, "Studying is important, but there's a seven-day holiday. Are you going to stay home the whole time?"
Lu Chuqing sensed her intention and asked, "You want to ask me out?"
Qu Fusang smiled, her eyes curving into crescents. "I wanted to hang out with you, but we could also meet at the library to do our homework together!"
The little girl took her hand and swayed her arm back and forth, saying with some distress, "I'm not very self-disciplined. I'm slow and procrastinate when I do my homework by myself. It would be much better if someone was with me."
The two passed a pavilion, which was bustling with many people, both men and women, and several of them had dyed hair.
Qu Fusang glanced in that direction, then pulled Lu Chuqing and quickened her pace, "Let's hurry up and get away from them."
Just as the two were about to walk over, a guy over there sighed, "Brother Sheng, you keep staring at that girl, have you taken a fancy to her? Should we go and stop her?"
As soon as the boy finished speaking, another boy shouted, "Hey you two beauties over there, your brother Sheng told you to stop!"
Laughter erupted from the pavilion. Fu Sheng's expression changed, and she kicked the boy who had spoken first, yelling, "Are you blind?! Which of your dog eyes saw me staring at them?!"
The boy was kicked off the stone bench and fell to the ground. His laughter stopped instantly, and someone started saying nice things, "Brother Sheng, calm down. What kind of beautiful girls hasn't our Brother Sheng seen? How could he possibly be interested in two underdeveloped girls..."
"Damn it! If you can't speak properly, shut up!" Before the boy could finish speaking, he was kicked by Fu Sheng, with even more force than the boy who had been kicked earlier.
Qu Fusang had already pulled Lu Chuqing away and walked far away. Fu Sheng glared at the two boys, but her gaze unconsciously lingered on the petite figure in the distance for a couple of moments.
As he watched the little girl walk faster and faster, the irritation in his chest intensified.
"Did you have a fight with him?" After moving away from the pavilion, Lu Chuqing asked the little girl in front of her.
Wang Qiang was too strict; she got rid of several boys in her class in just three days after the start of the semester.
Fu Sheng was one of them; she dyed her hair, wore earrings, didn't wear her school uniform, and didn't attend classes.
Teenagers often have some who are particularly rebellious and have a strong sense of adolescent angst.
Lu Chuqing didn't care much about this and still didn't know that Huang Mao's name was Fu Sheng. She only asked that question because of Qu Fusang.
“No. We’ve never had a good time,” Qu Fusang muttered.
Since Fu Sheng transferred to another class, he has become increasingly unrestrained, ignoring their agreement. When she tried to persuade him, he scolded her instead, so she decided to just ignore him.
Then this person started trying to get her attention again, which was incredibly annoying.
If they weren't living together, she really wouldn't want to see Fu Sheng always hanging out with his cronies.
Since it was someone else's business, Lu Chuqing didn't say anything more, and the two went back to their classroom together.
After the last exam in the afternoon, there was still more than half an hour before school ended.
The teachers went into the classroom one after another to assign homework, and the classroom was filled with groans and cries.
Qu Fusang slumped dejectedly on the table, looking at the thick stack of books with a worried expression. "It's only been a month since school started, how can the teachers assign so much homework! And it's supposed to be a holiday? It doesn't feel like a break at all."
Lu Chuqing sighed, "There's nothing we can do. We're students, after all. We're born to do homework!"
The little girl next to her looked up, tugged at her sleeve and shook it, "Chuqing, how about we go to the library together to do our homework!"
When the girl returned to class at noon, she had only said that she hadn't decided whether to make a date or not. Now she said it again, and Lu Chuqing agreed.
"Okay, just let me know in advance."
"Okay!" Qu Fusang smiled and thought for a moment. "Let's start tomorrow. The sooner we finish writing, the sooner we can get some rest."
"Can."
The two made a promise, and soon after, the school bell rang, and they walked out of the school gate together.
