At the time, she was in a hurry to go abroad and didn't think much about why someone would suddenly contact her. It wasn't until Jin Yan brought up the old story in Ulm that Gu Nan realized what was going on.
But many years have passed, and it no longer matters who you cooperated with or who was bullied. Jin Yan, having heard some news, looked nervous as he apologized, while Gu Nan waved her hand dismissively, ignoring the truth he spoke of.
Unexpectedly, one day, after many twists and turns, it turned out that she was the one who caused Lu Yushi's insomnia.
The phone was answered after ringing twice. Jin Yan's voice was hoarse, carrying the weariness of being jolted awake from a deep sleep.
"Boss, what's up?"
Gu Nan gazed silently at the moon, the shadows of the trees swaying gently, a touch of desolation in the air. Finally, she sighed and asked about the past.
“You wouldn’t listen when I told you,” Jin Yan muttered a complaint in a low voice, rummaging through some vague memories, and then talking about five years ago abroad.
“Lu Yushi turned Lu Yuanzhi into that inhuman, ghostly state. It’s obvious that Lu Yushi wants to take control of the Lu family. I’m afraid that the fact that I swindled him out of 20 million back then will be exposed. I’m telling you to be careful, but you think I’m being nagging.”
"I..." Gu Nan felt guilty and lowered her voice, "It's not that I didn't take it to heart."
After saying that, he rested his chin on his hands, his brows furrowed in a frown.
Back then, Valbus was constantly chasing after her, trying to kill her. She had no time to spare for old grudges. After surviving her ordeal, she and Jin Yan were separated by vast distances, barely seeing each other once, and she never even thought to ask about that past.
Jin Yan's tone suddenly turned gossipy and mischievous. Suppressing a laugh, he asked, "What's going on? Did you have a change of heart and feel sorry for Lu Yushi, or did you fall out with Lu Yushi and are afraid of his revenge?"
Before Gu Nan could answer, he continued to comfort her, saying, "But I think you can rest assured that this debt has already been settled with Lu Yuanzhi. Lu Yuanzhi is unable to speak now and has no chance to accuse us."
He truly had an air of fearlessness.
Gu Nan sighed again, looking down at her phone screen. Time ticked by, and her finger hovered over the hang-up button. She hesitated for a full half minute before finally speaking.
“He plans to lead the Lu family to conquer the field of artificial intelligence, and you… uh… ouch… oh dear,” she suddenly spoke faster, “help out if you can.”
"Tsk, what do you mean, boss?" Jin Yan pretended to be confused, deliberately drawing out his question.
How could Gu Nan not hear the sarcasm in his words? That insignificant concern was being blatantly displayed on his face. Gu Nan couldn't accept it and rebuked him with a fierce but weak tone: "What do you mean? If things come to light in the future, maybe he'll show mercy and do you a favor because you helped him before."
After saying that, as if a wolf was about to bite him on the other end of the phone, he hurriedly hung up.
Gu Nan twirled the phone in his palm, then casually put it back in his pocket. He turned sideways and peeked through the crack in the door. Old Man Lu's eyes were tightly closed, and he was motionless.
She muttered to herself, "You're so carefree. I invited you here to sleep?"
He raised his hand and pressed the switch, and soft, soothing music gently spread throughout the room, waking the sleeping man. Old Lu looked around, his gaze meeting hers from behind the door, before calmly lowering his eyes and remaining silent.
They seemed certain she couldn't do anything, or that someone would come to her aid soon, so they didn't take her seriously.
Gu Nan kicked the door lightly, but the sound failed to attract Old Man Lu's attention.
She simply said, "Enjoy it."
As soon as he finished speaking, the music suddenly swelled up.
The gap at the door was completely sealed, and a peaceful scene unfolded outside.
She lowered her head, stepping on her dark shadow, calculating the time in her mind. There were still three days until Yunting's exhibition, and she would have to leave in three days.
He turned around and snorted, "Luckily, only three days."
However, she ultimately underestimated the power of the Lu family.
Or rather, she underestimated Lu Yushi.
The Lu family found the place the following evening.
The impressive search team during the search, and the complete absence of any rumors after the person was found, can all be attributed to the current head of the Lu family.
Gu Nan hid behind the door, quietly watching the bodyguards swarm in. Some turned off the stereo, some loosened the ropes binding Old Man Lu, and some vented their anger on the tables and chairs in the room.
Only Lu Yushi stood with his hands at his sides, his gaze fixed on the small speaker, unable to come back to his senses for a long time.
The light shone on his right side, casting a shadow on his left cheek with his high, straight nose. His eyelashes trembled slightly, yet the shadow revealed them all. The shadow also obscured the unfathomable light in his eyes.
Gu Nan clenched his fists and broke into the Lu family's old house again in the middle of the night.
Old Lu lay on the bed, still silent, looking at the half-dead, lifeless body.
Gu Nan paced back and forth by the window with satisfaction, the anger in her heart instantly vanishing without a trace.
She kicked the bed leg, waking him up, and asked with her arms crossed, "Do you like the music I specially chose for you?"
Having not slept for two whole days and nights, Old Man Lu struggled to lift his eyelids. Even though he had escaped the cage of noise, it still seemed as if music was playing in his ears every moment, endlessly tormenting his nerves and stimulating a dull pain in his heart.
Having been in power for half his life, Old Man Lu naturally wouldn't back down to Gu Nan. He forced himself to stand up despite his tinnitus, his voice icy: "Lu Yushi wants my life?"
"Peng—"
As he slammed his fist against the headboard, a fierce glint appeared in Old Man Lu's eyes: "Go back and tell Lu Yushi that if he dares to take my life, the Lu family will definitely not fall into his hands."
Gu Nan crossed her arms and looked at him coldly, saying lazily, "Old man, I'll tell you one last time, it's my own preference to punish evil and promote good, and to give someone a taste of their own medicine. It has nothing to do with Lu Yushi, understand?"
"If it weren't for Lu Yushi, what grudge would you have against me?"
Gu Nan leaned forward, slightly bending down to meet Old Man Lu's gaze directly, her eyes filled with a sharp, oppressive intensity: "You should be glad it wasn't Lu Yushi, because if it were him, no one could have saved you. You only spent two days in a noisy environment and you think I want to kill you? Then when you tied Lu Yushi up and kept him inside for 28 days, did you never intend for him to come out alive?"
She clenched her teeth, her voice growing more and more resentful: "Two days? That's far from enough... far from enough to quell my anger."
"I'm punishing myself..."
"What right do you have! You say Lu Yushi embezzled your 20 million, but who ultimately got that 20 million? You say he sold company secrets, but have you investigated the truth behind the leak? Where is the evidence? Just based on Lu Yuanzhi's nonsense?"
Gu Nan pressed closer, directly at Old Man Lu: "You knew he was wronged, yet you still let Lu Yuanzhi bully him. Lu Yuanzhi deserves his fate today, and so do you."
Her words came out in rapid succession, one after another, but she couldn't quite explain in her heart whether she blamed herself or hated Old Man Lu.
If she had known that twenty million would cause Lu Yushi so much suffering, she would have…
Her mind was flooded with memories of Lu Yushi's repeated use of the word "noisy" during their first hypnosis session. Now, thinking back, every "noisy" felt like a sharp knife, slowly tearing at her heart.
"Strengthen the security of this house. You still owe me 26 days."
Having said that, he turned and walked out, regardless of Old Man Lu's reaction.
Taking advantage of the dim moonlight, they climbed over the high wall.
They came and went without alerting any bodyguards.
She found herself standing quietly in front of Lu Yushi's villa, looking up at the study. The lights were on, but she couldn't see anyone inside; he must be busy.
Her eyes darkened, and before the security guards could spot her, she turned and walked into the night.
I'm going to keep a date I've been planning for 18 years.
Upon arriving at the agreed location, Shen Manman, dressed in a glamorous manner, was pacing back and forth in front of the lounge with her arms crossed, looking slightly anxious.
Gu Nan paused, took out her phone to scan the messages, and called out loudly, "Manman."
Shen Manman turned around at the sound, her anxiety instantly disappearing. She stepped forward familiarly and took her hand: "You've finally arrived. I sent you a message but didn't get a reply. I was worried you had misremembered the time."
"No," Gu Nan explained, "I was in a hurry to get here and didn't check my phone."
"Let's go," Shen Manman said, not caring that she was late. She took her arm and her face was beaming with joy. "I'm so excited to finally see all of Master Yunting's original works!"
From the flight from the North City to Ulm, all Gu Nan could hear was Shen Manman talking about how excited she was. Gu Nan was infected by the pure joy in her eyes and smiled absentmindedly.
"Let's go, what are you daydreaming about? Hurry up!"
Place the admission ticket in front of the high-tech smart gate, verify it in 10 seconds, and the machine gate slowly opens a small door that allows only one person to pass at a time.
The two entered one after the other. Shen Manman ran around Gu Nan, her eyes constantly looking around, occasionally letting out a gasp of surprise.
Gu Nan couldn't help but say, "The Shen family must be quite well-off too."
Shen Manman covered her mouth: "Compared to this place, it's worlds apart."
The entire path is a long corridor draped with flowers, but they aren't real flowers; rather, they're a remarkably realistic effect created using projection technology. Moreover, whenever a gentle breeze blows, the air is filled with the corresponding floral fragrance.
Exclamations of amazement rose and fell.
There are even crystal pillars that pierce the sky, reflecting clouds and birds, but when you get close and reach out to touch them, you realize that they are not real objects.
A half-meter-tall robot with a kind, motherly voice guided 50 visitors into the venue.
Another robot glided out, carrying a cart in its left hand, on which were displayed all kinds of juices.
The only living person in the entire place was the bodyguard at the door with an indifferent expression.
The exhibition hall doors were wide open, and 50 people rushed to get in.
Gu Nan was a step too slow and ended up last.
Shen Manman turned around and looked thoughtfully: "You're so calm."
A moment of surprise flashed across Gu Nan's face before she said, "I'm only curious about Yun Ting's work."
"Yes, yes, yes," Shen Manman immediately put aside her curiosity about Gu Nan after being reminded, and rushed into the room.
The so-called exhibition hall is no bigger than a living room, and each piece of art is carefully protected in a thickened crystal glass sealed box.
Even without the aid of lights, it is still lifelike and radiant.
"So beautiful!"
"To be able to see Master Yun Ting's works in person, I would die without regrets!"
"Is it really not allowed to take photos?"
The robot rolled forward, its voice firm: "No."
Shen Manman stuck out her tongue, the seven-colored gemstone shimmering on her face. Her smile widened on her clean and flawless face. She showed no anger after being rejected and pulled Gu Nan to another stone platform.
Read the words on the stone: "Failed product?"
Gu Nan explained, "Yun Ting had a total of 18 failed products. I heard that they were all very important to her, so she kept them all."
Shen Manman stroked the stone platform; the mutton-fat jade felt warm and smooth to the touch. Her face was full of regret that she couldn't touch the artwork inside the platform. She pouted and said, "I think it's very beautiful. If it were taken out, it would definitely cause a frenzy among everyone."
"The processes are different, so it's not necessarily true." Gu Nan shook his head.
Shen Manman looked at her for a while, then said in surprise, "You know so much."
"After all, I like it." Gu Nan replied fluently.
Shen Manman didn't think much of it, tapped the stone platform with her finger, and said strangely, "There are only three items."
"The rest should be in another room."
"Another one?" Shen Manman looked up and around. This exhibition hall only had one door, and bodyguards stood guard at the door, silently watching the tourists coming and going.
Looking inside, even at the very end, there was no entrance to another room.
Gu Nan chuckled.
Feeling embarrassed by the teasing, Shen Manman pretended to be angry and asked, "What are you laughing at?"
Gu Nan whispered mysteriously in her ear, "I checked before I came, and it's said there's a secret mechanism."
"Huh?" Shen Manman was surprised and subconsciously looked at the bodyguard at the door again. The bodyguard gave her a smile, which was unusual for him.
Do you want to see it?
