Chapter 77 Fainting
Although these words belittled herself and elevated Jingchen, Madam Pei was no ordinary person; how could she not understand the true meaning behind them?
The old lady's gaze lingered on Ji Shu's face for a long time, so sharp it seemed to pierce through everything and strike at the depths of her heart.
This young lady is so ambitious. Could it be that she looks down on the position of a concubine and is instead eyeing the position of the mistress of Yanzhou?
Thinking of this, a cold glint flashed in the old lady's eyes. How could she, a helpless orphan, sit on the throne of the mistress of Yanzhou?
The old lady picked up her teacup and took a slow sip, her tone indifferent: "Fine, since you are unwilling, I am also unwilling to be the bad guy. Madam Ji is still young, so why not think it over again?"
After Ji Shu came out of Fushou Garden, she lowered her eyes and was lost in thought. Song Yunshu followed her out and said with a faint smile beside her, "Miss Ji, don't take it to heart. The old lady really likes you, which is why she wants you to enter the mansion as soon as possible."
Ji Shu looked up at her and forced a smile as she replied, "Thank you for your guidance, Second Madam. I'm fine. Just as I said in the Old Madam's room, I can't make decisions about these things. If I were to agree rashly, wouldn't I be needlessly displeasing the Marquis?"
Song Yunshu was surprised that she was so eloquent at such a young age. She looked at her calmly and said, "That's right, that's right. I know my older brother's temper quite well..."
She paused deliberately before continuing, "Even Gu Shi, who used to be his favorite, might not listen to what he wants to say to my elder brother—"
Ji Shu raised her eyebrows slightly and looked at the second madam in front of her. She saw that although the madam was a pretty and delicate woman, she was wearing a bright red cross-collar long dress and a peony gold and silver tree hairpin.
Her flamboyant attire actually made her lose her original elegance.
When she mentioned the Gu family again, my dislike for her intensified. I wondered if she was trying to make me jealous of the previous one with just a few words.
That's overthinking it.
Seeing her indifferent expression, Song Yunshu added fuel to the fire, saying, "Madam Ji probably doesn't know yet, does she? The Shanshui Residence where you live now is the courtyard of my elder brother's first wife."
Seeing that no one was around, she lowered her voice and said, "I heard—but I had just married into the family at that time, and I heard it from the servants below, that she died in childbirth."
Upon hearing this, Ji Shu stared blankly. Song Yunshu watched her expression as she spoke, and seeing that she was no longer as calm as before, she couldn't help but sneer inwardly.
Do you think I can't handle a little brat like you with a few words?
"When the midwife came out, she was holding a male fetus that was eight months pregnant. It's a pity, though, that it was stillborn...tsk tsk..." Song Yunshu said with a sigh.
Ji Shu's face turned deathly pale as she thought of the bed she had been lying on a few days ago, the very place where Gu Shi had suffered a difficult childbirth.
This morning she was having sex with Pei Yanzhi, which made her feel even more disgusted than eating the contaminated food.
"Ugh..." Ji Shu clutched her chest and bent over to dry heave by the flower bed.
Seeing this, Song Yunshu simply stood aside, a smile playing on her lips, and suddenly exclaimed in surprise, "Oh dear, what's wrong, little sister? Are you feeling unwell?"
Ji Shu vomited up all of her lunch and felt weak all over, as if she was about to collapse. Fortunately, the place was not far from Shanshui Residence, and Lian'er heard the noise and immediately ran out.
"Help! My lady has fainted!"
Ji Shu lay on the bed with her eyes closed, her forehead beaded with cold sweat. Pei Yanzhi sat beside her, his face terribly gloomy.
He roared, "Where's the medic? Why hasn't he arrived yet?"
"Here they come, here they come!" Doctor Lei was hurriedly invited over.
He lifted the curtain, stepped forward and gently took her pulse. After a short while, he stood up and said to Pei Yanzhi, "Reporting to my lord, Lady Ji suffered from the summer heat and overthinking, which caused her to vomit and faint. She is not seriously ill."
He then instructed Man'er, "Brew some medicine later. Once Madam Ji wakes up, she will be fine after drinking it."
Pei Yanzhi's furrowed brows relaxed upon hearing this, and he asked Lian'er in a deep voice, "What exactly happened? The person was perfectly fine just now. How did you take care of him?"
I'm fine after lunch today.
Lian'er recounted everything she had seen that afternoon: "When I arrived, the young lady had already fainted, and only the Second Madam was by her side."
"What did you say?" Pei Yanzhi's face darkened suddenly, and the pressure around him was terrifyingly low.
Pei Yanzhi rarely gets angry these days, but his recent outbursts have all come from Ji Shu. He suddenly threw the teapot on the table to the ground, and the sound of it shattering made Chunzhi and Lian'er tremble.
"Investigate! Investigate thoroughly for me!"
Wu Yang stepped forward, bowed, and accepted the order: "Yes!"
Pei Yanzhi looked at her once delicate and rosy cheeks, which had now lost their color, and the storm gathering in his eyes intensified. He thought of Song Yunshu and then of Pei Song.
"Take good care of her here, and let someone inform her when she wakes up." With that, the man strode out.
...
Pei Yan kicked open the door of Tingyu Pavilion. Pei Song, disheveled, was on the bed with Song Shi’s maidservant, about to do something. The loud noise startled him so much that he almost fell off the bed.
Upon seeing that the person who came was his elder brother, he hurriedly straightened his clothes and pushed Miaoyin aside, saying, "Cough... Elder brother, what brings you here?"
Miaoyin knelt on the ground, clutching her clothes by the collar.
Pei Song looked up and saw his elder brother staring at him with a gloomy expression, which startled him. What was wrong? He didn't think he had done anything wrong recently.
Even his mother said he had improved a lot these days. "Big brother, what's wrong?"
Pei Yanzhi waved his hand, and Miaoyin hurriedly got up from the ground and left.
"How are things between you and the Song family today?" He glanced at the wrinkled soft couch, frowned, and walked to a chair to sit down.
Pei Song was a little confused. What happened between him and Song Shi? Nothing had happened.
It's still the same as always.
"Nothing happened between her and me... Brother, you know that Yun Shu and I are childhood sweethearts, we've known each other since we were little, and we've always treated each other with respect!"
Pei Yanzhi looked at the rouge stain still on the corner of his mouth and sneered: "Your so-called mutual respect is just about having an affair with her personal maid? If she finds out, how do you expect her to face all this?"
"Your husband is having an affair with your most intimate maid, what do you call that? Are all the women in the world dead?"
He glanced at her casually as he entered; the maid was of average appearance, not even as beautiful as Madam Song.
He really didn't know what to say about his younger brother.
"I……"
"It was my fault, I'll stop it right away, I'll stop it right away!"
Pei Yanzhi didn't want to continue talking about what happened in his room. His face darkened, and he asked, "Do you know what Madam Song said to Shu'er today?"
Pei Song was completely bewildered. How could he possibly know this? Song Shi usually wouldn't let him know anything about her affairs.
