Chapter 204 I am not worthy to be your husband
As darkness fell, Pei Yanzhi awoke from his stupor, but as soon as he opened his eyes, a tearing pain shot through his back.
There was no familiar figure in the cave, only his mottled bloodstains and half an arrowhead remained on the ground.
She's not here.
Has he been abandoned again?
Pei Yanzhi couldn't help but chuckle bitterly to himself in the dim light.
Well, as long as she's alright, it wasn't all for nothing.
After a while, clear footsteps came from outside the cave. Pei Yanzhi narrowed his eyes, his gaze icy. If it were the King of Qin's men who came now, he was not confident that he could fight again.
He clenched his fists, struggling to get up.
Then a slender figure stepped into the cave. Ji Shu was holding freshly drawn water, and her eyes were shining brightly as she looked at him in the firelight.
Pei Yanzhi's tall body trembled violently.
What followed was immense joy; he still thought she was gone.
Once again, I'm hiding far away from myself.
When Ji Shu saw him wake up, a glimmer of light flashed across her face, but then she saw him struggling to get up.
He immediately became anxious: "Why are you moving around like that? You're so badly injured, do you know that arrow was poisoned? You almost lost your life!"
Even such a brief encounter was enough to warm his heart and make him feel sweet.
Her throat was dry and sore, but she still managed to squeeze out a voice: "I...I thought you left again..."
Ji Shu froze, walked in and sat by the fire, and whispered, "There are Qin King's men everywhere outside, how can I leave? Feng Lin may or may not have set up an ambush for us... Now you've even given him the Tiger Tally."
At this point, Ji Shu was almost driven half-mad with anger by him.
His eyes blazed with anger: "You know exactly what kind of person he is, so why did you even come?"
Pei Yanzhi forced himself to sit up despite the excruciating pain in his back, leaning against the stone wall, his gaze gently falling on her face.
"He's taken you hostage, how could I not come?"
"Even if he takes my life on the spot, I won't hesitate!"
Ji Shu lowered her eyebrows and remained silent.
He got up and put the water he had brought aside. As soon as he moved his arm, he let out a soft "hiss."
Pei Yanzhi's eyes narrowed. "Shu'er, come here!"
Ji Shu thought he was feeling unwell. She had just caught her breath when she walked to his side, intending to squat down and examine the wound closely.
Fortunately, the wound was red and swollen, but it wasn't oozing black like before. I breathed a slight sigh of relief and handed him the water I had brought from the river.
Pei Yanzhi gripped her hand tightly, lowering his eyes to carefully observe her expression. "Are you injured?"
Ji Shu blurted out, "No, don't overthink it."
"let me see!"
As he spoke, he reached out to unbutton her blouse. If he wasn't mistaken, the wound should be on her back.
Seeing that he insisted on seeing clearly, and fearing that she might hurt him by struggling, Ji Shu had no choice but to let him unbutton her clothes.
He pulled the inner garment over with one hand, looking at the emerald green ribbon tightly wrapped around his neck, on which the lotus flowers embroidered were lifelike.
Pei Yanzhi rubbed her shoulder and said in a hoarse voice, "Is it on your back?"
Ji Shu gave a faint "hmm".
The firelight illuminated her fair shoulders, and her fingertips lightly brushed her waist, causing a rash to break out on Ji Shu's body.
After removing the inner garment, large patches of dark purple were visible on the beautiful shoulder blades.
It looks quite horrifying, and what's worse, there's a patch on it that's broken open.
Upon seeing this, Pei Yanzhi's dark eyes narrowed. "When were you injured? Why didn't you say so earlier?"
Ji Shu pulled her inner garment tighter, seemingly unconcerned, and said, "It's just a minor injury; it'll heal in a few days."
"Are there any other injuries?"
Ji Shu stood up, picked up the dress beside her, and put it on with her back to him, her tone becoming somewhat indifferent: "No."
She was furious and finally asked the question that had been weighing on her mind: "What exactly are your plans? If this world is taken over by such a villain, our lives are not the main concern, but the world will be thrown into chaos again. Don't you care?"
He had finally conquered the world and restored life to the people. How terrible would it be if things continued like this? Did he not know that?
Pei Yanzhi did not answer her questions. Seeing that she had finished dressing, he called out in a low, hoarse voice, "Shu'er, I'm in some pain!"
Listening to his voice, she had never seen him so weak in all these years, looking like he was about to die.
Feeling extremely uncomfortable, she walked over and sat down beside him. Pei Yanzhi, his lips pale, looked at her and said, "Are you still angry with me?"
Ji Shu was shaken. She looked up at him blankly, and her own reflection was clearly seen in his eyes.
Even though the two of them were in a sorry state, in this desolate cave, his gaze remained as focused as if he were looking at a treasure.
“I know that nothing I say can make up for what’s gone wrong.” His voice was low and hoarse. “What I learned from childhood was to fight for and take what I wanted.”
“My grandfather and father taught me that the process is not important, as long as the result is as I wish, but I never knew... that you had suffered so much injustice in those years.”
"It was my arrogance that made me unworthy to be your husband..."
Ji Shu stared at him blankly, never expecting such words to come out of his mouth.
He raised his hand and stroked her forehead, then her eyes, the tip of her nose, her rosy lips, finally lingering on her expressive eyes.
“Over the years, I have dreamed of you repeatedly. Many times you just stand there, dressed in white, without saying a word, just looking at me with your eyes. Your eyes seem to say that you hate me, hate me for ruining everything for you.”
“Every time I wake up and see that there is no one in my bed, I think that this is probably how my life will be.”
Ji Shu gazed at him calmly for a long time before speaking: "So what do you want to say? To repent for the mistakes you made? Or do you feel that as a person is about to die, you want to give your last words?"
Pei Yanzhi's hand paused slightly before slowly withdrawing.
A bitter smile appeared on his lips.
The only sound in the cave was the crackling of the firewood Ji Shu had gathered, which shone on the two of them, adding a touch of warmth, but doing nothing to dispel the chill in their hearts.
Looking at his blood-covered appearance and his earnest words, Ji Shu felt a sudden pang of sorrow.
I don't know if it was for myself or for him.
The two remained silent for a long time.
"I was taken away by the King of Qin. Does Qinghe know about this?"
Pei Yanzhi slowly shook his head: "I told him you went up the mountain to gather herbs and won't be back for a few days."
After saying that, a smile appeared in his eyes: "He's still asking me if I've made you happy."
Ji Shu sneered, "You're willing to hand over the empire so easily, what else wouldn't you do?"
