The Princess's residence was shrouded in darkness, and all was silent.
After finishing the last trivial matter in the palace, Shen Jintang looked up and saw that night had already fallen, the stars and moon hidden behind thin clouds, leaving only a deep darkness.
Her mood seemed to be tinged with complex emotions by the night, chaotic and hard to describe.
So, after getting off the carriage at the manor, she did not call Xinghui to accompany her, but walked alone along the corridor towards her bedroom.
The moonlight quietly spilled down, enveloping the long corridor like a light veil, shrouding everything in a hazy light and shadow.
Shen Jintang's footsteps were exceptionally clear in the stillness. She walked slowly forward, each step seemingly a reflection of the turmoil within her heart.
Suddenly, around the corner, a figure came into view.
The man leaned against a pillar, tilting his head slightly upward, his gaze seemingly lost in the boundless night.
The moonlight gently shone on his face, the interplay of light and shadow casting a hazy silver glow on his features.
His features were clear and bright, and his eyes appeared deep and serene in the moonlight. A gentle breeze blew, and his hair swayed softly, highlighting a hint of languor and contemplation on his face.
At that moment, he seemed to blend into the night, serene and beautiful, making one reluctant to disturb him.
"His Royal Highness?"
Shen Jintang's voice rang out softly in the night, carrying a hint of surprise and probing.
Upon hearing the sound, Gu Zhixing immediately turned around, a faint smile appearing on his face, his eyes sparkling as he looked directly at Shen Jintang.
His posture was languid and casual, dressed in plain nightgown with a thin outer robe over it. He was clearly already asleep, but the night had stirred up his thoughts, and he was spending the long night outside.
"You were waiting for me?" Shen Jintang took a few steps closer and looked him up and down.
Gu Zhixing's expression showed a hint of weariness, yet also an undisguised anticipation.
The place where he sat was on the only way to all parts of the Princess's residence.
If you just couldn't sleep and wanted to go for a walk, why would you choose this place?
Moreover, the night was deep, and all around was silent; even the chirping of insects seemed to be swallowed up by the darkness.
Who would come here if they had nothing better to do?
You noticed?
Gu Zhixing lowered his eyes slightly, his gaze becoming evasive, as if Shen Jintang had seen through his thoughts, leaving him somewhat at a loss.
Shen Jintang's heart stirred slightly, but she didn't delve into it. She simply walked to the edge of the corridor, sat down casually, and asked in a nonchalant tone, "What are you waiting for me for?"
Gu Zhixing hesitated for a moment, but still followed her and sat down next to her.
The two were shoulder to shoulder, only an inch apart, yet it felt as if they were separated by an endless night, both so close and yet so far away.
Are you in a bad mood? Did something happen today?
Gu Zhixing's voice was deep and gentle, with a hint of concern, as if he could see through Shen Jintang's indifference to the turmoil in her heart.
Shen Jintang fell silent for a moment. The moonlight shone on her, draping her in a thin silver veil and reflecting the sadness in her eyes.
Her tone remained calm, yet carried a barely perceptible hint of weariness: "Grand Tutor Shen is dead."
Shen Jintang gently shook her head, gazing at the distant night sky, as if telling a story unrelated to herself.
The moonlight, as clear as water, bathed the two of them, seemingly adding a touch of chill to the night.
Shen Jintang's expression appeared even more aloof and distant under the moonlight, while Gu Zhixing appeared even more gentle and persistent.
In the darkness of the night, one was still and the other moved, one was cold and the other warm, and the atmosphere between them seemed to be stretched more and more subtly by the night.
Gu Zhixing frowned slightly, a hint of worry appearing between his brows.
No one knew the relationship between Shen Jintang and Grand Tutor Shen better than him.
They only ended up together by chance because of Grand Tutor Shen.
Logically speaking, the death of Grand Tutor Shen should have been the opportunity for Shen Jintang to be freed, but her expression at this moment clearly revealed an indescribable heaviness.
He raised his hand, wanting to gently pat Shen Jintang's shoulder to offer her some comfort.
However, before his hand could touch her shoulder, Shen Jintang suddenly raised her head and met his gaze with eyes as cold as stars.
His hand froze in mid-air, unable to move forward or backward, and a hint of embarrassment quietly crept onto his brow.
“But I don’t regret it. If I had another chance, I would make the same choice.” Shen Jintang’s voice sounded particularly cold in the night, yet it conveyed a sense of determination.
Even if she was vilified and her hands were stained with blood, she was not afraid.
That's the kind of person she is; she'd rather go to hell herself than let her enemies be dragged into the abyss with her.
She couldn't bear to see her enemies doing well, nor could she tolerate their success.
Suddenly, Shen Jintang felt a warmth in her hand. Looking down, she saw that it was Gu Zhixing holding her hand.
His hands were warm and strong, as if they could dispel the gloom in her heart.
Gu Zhixing leaned down slightly, gazing at her with deep and focused eyes, as if trying to see through her thoughts.
He asked softly, "Is something bothering you? Is someone giving you trouble?"
His voice was deep and gentle, with a hint of barely perceptible tension, as if he were afraid of disturbing her.
He knew that Shen Jintang's words meant that she still had unfinished business.
If given another chance, she can only make the same choice, which means that she had a more perfect solution, but was bound by many restrictions and constraints and could not implement it.
Shen Jintang felt a little irritated by Gu Zhixing's intense gaze. She suddenly looked away, her heart pounding uncontrollably.
She herself couldn't explain why.
Her intention was to show her determination to go through fire and water, but Gu Zhixing was determined to pull her out of this quagmire.
