Chapter 168 Listen to the Madam

Shen Jintang paused slightly as she held her chopsticks. Out of the corner of her eye, she caught a glimpse of the mischievous smile in Shen Youyi's eyes. Then, looking at the teeth marks on Gu Zhixing's wrist, she couldn't help but feel a slight burning sensation in her ears, as if they had been reddened by the warm spring sun.

Gu Zhixing simply flipped his wrist, his sleeve flowing like water to cover the mark, and said without changing his expression, "That's right, the mosquitoes have been really fierce lately..."

Before he could finish speaking, he was suddenly kicked under the table.

Shen Jintang picked up a piece of candied lotus root and stuffed it into Youyi's mouth, but her eyes swept over Gu Zhixing, her tone serious with a hint of warning: "Don't talk while eating. If you keep talking nonsense, you'll be sleeping in the study tonight."

Shen Youyi puffed out her cheeks, with lotus root in her mouth, but still couldn't help but chuckle.

She was originally very afraid of Gu Zhixing, but with Shen Jintang here, she was not so afraid anymore.

“Sister…” Shen Youyi wanted to say something more, but was interrupted by Shen Jintang’s stern gaze.

“Chen, You, Yi.” Shen Jintang put down his silver chopsticks, and the porcelain spoon made a crisp sound as it hit the rim of the bowl.

Shen Youyi immediately shrank her neck and obediently ate her rice, but her eyes kept glancing at Shen Jintang.

Gu Zhixing suppressed a laugh, served each of the two sisters a bowl of mung bean soup, and whispered in Shen Jintang's ear: "See? You'll have to train them on their bedding manners in the future. Don't scratch and bite me like that."

Shen Jintang, however, replaced his mung bean soup with the bitterest lotus seed tea, a sly smile playing on his lips.

Just as Gu Zhixing was about to beg for mercy, he suddenly saw Xing Hui stride quickly through the corridor, her skirt catching a gust of wind.

"master."

Xinghui whispered in her ear, her voice extremely soft, "I just received news that Wang Jian did not attend court this morning, and his servants say he did not return last night."

Shen Jintang's hand holding the spoon suddenly tightened, and the porcelain spoon struck the rim of the bowl with a crisp sound, like a thunderclap breaking the tranquil sky.

When Shen Youyi looked up, she had returned to normal, her tone calm but with a hint of coldness: "Youyi, eat first, I'll have the kitchen prepare some pear soup for you."

"Sister, are you going to work? Is it dangerous?" Shen Youyi also noticed something was wrong, and her eyes showed concern.

"It's nothing." Shen Jintang said, then stood up. Her sleeves flashed past the door like a gust of wind.

Gu Zhixing looked up and saw that Shen Jintang had already gotten up and left her seat. He immediately rushed to the hanging flower gate and grabbed her wrist.

He felt her rapid pulse with his fingertips, and his heart sank. He asked, "What's wrong? What happened?"

Shen Jintang grabbed his hand in return, her nails almost digging into his palm, her voice as cold as ice: "Wang Jian has disappeared. On the very night we found out about the business."
