Side Story: Prologue Part 1 - Painting the Past

Who exactly has been describing how wonderful the world is after ascension?

Ever since Fang Xian broke through to the Mahayana realm and reached the Ascension realm, he has been thinking about this question all the time.

Life in the Upper Realm is much more boring than life in the Lower Realm. When he was a disciple in Changfeng Valley, he could do nothing all day and be a lazy bum. But after he came here, the Heavenly Dao would occasionally send him a golden scroll with a bolt of lightning, ordering him to do this or that job or he would be struck by lightning.

Good heavens! Although the lightning won't kill anyone, it will randomly turn people's hair into an afro for several days!

Fang Xian only gave in to his image because of his own reasons.

As usual, today, a bolt of lightning struck him unexpectedly.

The timing was so perfect that he almost blurted out a curse word about immortals and demons.

"Heavenly Law! Can't you at least look at what I'm doing before issuing the decree?!" He gripped the draft paper tightly.

Yes, since ascending to immortality, although people have become immortals, their bodies have actually degenerated compared to the spiritually rich world of the upper realm. Eating and excretion must be handled in the same way as when they were in the lower realm before breaking through the Qi Refining stage and were unable to abstain from grains.

The lightning bolt just now caused his poop to break in two.

Fang Xian was still cursing even when he was standing next to the Ascension Platform.

Fortunately, the task Heaven gave him today was relatively simple. He didn't need to run around quelling various major troubles that the people of the lower realm couldn't handle. He only needed to come to the Ascension Platform to pick up a newcomer who had ascended from the lower realm.

Previously, the Heavenly Dao did not seem to care much about the lower realms, but since the war between immortals and demons broke out again, the entire small world was torn to pieces, and spiritual energy and demonic energy mixed and became chaotic. It seems that the Heavenly Dao has finally woken up.

I sat up abruptly in my deathbed and realized, oh my god, that my little world seemed to be dying.

This emergency measure kept the idle immortals in the upper realm busy.

Fang Xuan ascended to heaven fifty years after the outbreak of the war between immortals and demons.

The demon realm, having consumed some unknown substance, launched an attack more ferocious than any previously recorded invasion in history. Half of the spiritual resources accumulated in Changfeng Valley over a thousand years were depleted in just ten years, forcing everyone to tighten their belts to survive.

However, Fang Xuan's originally stagnant cultivation was honed through daily battles, and he became the first among his peers to ascend to the upper realm.

This was the result of his long-suppressed efforts, in order to fight the demonic cultivators for a longer period of time; otherwise, he would have ascended to immortality much sooner.

Speaking of which, their generation is truly experiencing a decline in talent.

Sheng Xi perished during the tribulation of ascension, and Ji Mo Fan died from overwork caused by his constant travels between the two realms... If Li Jin Chu hadn't had the entire Li family as his backing, he would have died ten or eight times over given his hectic lifestyle.

Thinking of this, Fang Xuan couldn't help but click his tongue.

It seems you shouldn't talk about people behind their backs.

The faint white light on the Ascension Platform gradually dissipated, making the human figures within clearer. However, the glare was no less intense than when the platform was enveloped in white light, and the dazzling array of colorful jewels made one's eyes hurt.

"After all these years, why are you still dressed so extravagantly?" Fang Xian crossed his arms and walked up to Li Jinchu. "You're over a hundred years old, yet you still love attracting attention just like when you were young."

"Fang Xian?" Li Jinchu was taken aback, then couldn't help but laugh. "I was wondering why the Heavenly Dao told me to be mentally prepared, because I might receive a very memorable welcoming ceremony."

"So you were the one who dumped me here to pick me up."

Fang Xian looked unhappy. "What's wrong? It's me. Are you dissatisfied?"

"You ascended to immortality decades later than me, what right do you have to look down on me?"

Li Jinchu flicked her folding fan, the fan covering the corner of her mouth. "No. Satisfied, I'm satisfied."

"By the way, how's the lower realm lately?" Despite his playful banter, Fang Xuan still wanted to ask some serious questions.

After ascending to immortality, apart from the decree of Heaven, immortals are not allowed to interfere with the affairs of the mortal realm. Therefore, Fang Xuan is not always able to keep track of the current situation of the people he used to know.

"It's still the same. The demonic cultivators' offensive has weakened, but they still show no signs of stopping." Li Jinchu's eyes darkened. "Changfeng Valley is not bad. After all, more than 80% of your disciples are either alchemists or herbalists. Not many can go to the front line."

"While it's not exactly safe in the rear, it's certainly much more secure than other sects."

"What about the Xiaoling Sect?" Fang Xuan asked.

"Xiaoling Sect..." Li Jinchu's hand, which was waving a folding fan, unconsciously stopped.

The fingertips gripping the fan ribs turned white, and the jade structure emitted a soft, rustling sound.
