Chapter 140 Ye Li's Background
Why here...?
So familiar?
Even though it was her first time here, Ye Li felt that everything here seemed familiar.
Endless sand dunes, withered poplar trunks, and wind-eroded rock mountains of various shapes.
She always felt that she had been here before, or even lived here.
Perhaps, it was before she entered the Heavenly Gate Sect?
In fact, Ye Li didn't know much about how she entered the Heavenly Gate Sect or about her background.
All she knew was that she was an unwanted orphan who had been taken in.
That's why she not only regarded Master Qingyu as her master, but also as her benefactor.
Without Master Qingyu, she might be a beggar now, or perhaps sold into slavery somewhere.
However, Qingyu Zhenren was cold-hearted and never told her where he had brought her back from or whether she had parents.
She remembered asking him once, but was rebuked by Master Qingyu. He said that cultivators are born of the Heavenly Dao and must abandon their past lives in order to seek the Dao.
Ye Li looked around. Could it be that she lived in the Golden Sand Illusionary Realm before she entered the Heavenly Gate Sect?
"oops-"
A soft cry escaped her lips.
Su Ying'er staggered a couple of steps after entering and bumped into Lu Ziting's arms, looking weak and helpless.
The last one to enter was Zhao Yaoguang, and the barrier closed behind her.
She looked around and pointed to a patch of green in the desert. "That's the only oasis in the mirage zone. If anyone is here, they must be in that place."
Zhao Yaoguang was the one who knew the situation best among them, and no one objected.
Just as they were about to head towards the oasis, Su Ying'er suddenly spoke up, "With so many of us, if we act together, the search for clues will be too slow. Why don't we split up?"
As she spoke, she took Lu Ziting's arm. "Senior Brother, let's go to the wind-eroded rock mountain over there."
Before Lu Ziting could speak, Zhao Yaoguang stopped him, saying, "This place is different from other places. We don't know what dangers are lurking here. It's better not to split up."
Lu Ziting agreed, "Yes, Ying'er, let's go with Sect Leader Chu."
"But……"
Su Ying'er wanted to say something more, but everyone had already headed towards the oasis, so she could only follow.
Ye Li, who was a step behind, looked at Su Ying'er with a probing gaze. Su Ying'er valued her life so much, so why did she propose to act alone in such a dangerous place?
Moreover, the closer they got to the oasis, the more resistant Su Ying'er looked, as if she was wary of something.
Ye Li had a vague premonition.
-
Soon, the oasis arrived.
There are many rest stations, restaurants, and inns on the oasis.
Ye Li looked around. "Does anyone live here?"
Zhao Yaoguang explained, "There used to be people here. There were several mines inside, and many businessmen would stop here to rest. But later, too many people went missing, and since this place is near the Abyss of Despair, where magical beasts appear from time to time, it was abandoned."
Sure enough, just as Zhao Yaoguang had said, the buildings here were old and dilapidated, and most of the walls had been weathered.
Apart from the mansion in the very center of the oasis.
Not only was the house completely undamaged, but even the plaque above the vermilion gate looked as if it had just been hung up, with the ink still fresh.
One of the disciples noticed and pointed in surprise, asking, "Was this just built? Why does it look so new?"
Zhao Yaoguang seemed quite used to the mansion. "It's not newly built. This immortal mansion has existed since this oasis came into being. We guess it must be the mansion of some wandering immortal. Because of the immortal magic, it hasn't decayed."
"I see."
The disciple who was asking the question looked curiously at the two tightly closed doors.
Meanwhile, the disciples who went to explore the surrounding area returned, saying, "The houses here are all terribly dilapidated and uninhabitable."
Someone suggested, "Why don't we stay in this celestial abode for the night?"
"no!"
The sudden, shrill female voice startled everyone.
Turning around, I saw Su Ying'er.
When everyone first gathered around, she kept her distance. Only when they were about to go in did she rush over to stop them, shouting, "You absolutely cannot open this door!"
“Ying’er…”
Looking at Su Ying'er's somewhat distorted expression, Lu Ziting asked in confusion, "What's wrong with you?"
Su Ying'er snapped out of her daze and realized she had been too excited. She tugged at Lu Ziting's sleeve and said in a soft voice, "Senior Brother, Ying'er just thinks that this is someone else's home. If we go in and disturb them, the owner will be angry."
Lu Ziting didn't take it to heart, saying, "A gentleman acts in the world based on mutual assistance. Since this is the abode of immortals, they wouldn't be so stingy."
Su Ying'er kept shaking her head, "No, Ying'er is scared, we, we shouldn't go in."
"What the young lady said makes sense."
Zhao Yaoguang nodded in agreement, "We haven't figured out why the victims went missing yet, so it's best not to rush into these unknown places. There are a few walls over there that don't look completely destroyed, let's go there and repair them tonight."
And so, the group arrived at the place Zhao Yaoguang had mentioned, lit torches, and erected a barrier to prevent any demonic beasts from attacking.
Darkness falls very quickly here; it was daytime just a moment ago, and in the blink of an eye, it turns pitch black, as if a black net has been draped over your head.
The dilapidated houses took on a sinister air under the cover of night, and the shopkeepers' banners fluttered in the wind, casting swaying shadows on the ground.
Although they didn't encounter any danger after entering, the more this happened, the more uneasy they became.
If the mirage in the desert looks peaceful, why do so many people disappear without a trace?
Zhao Yaoguang cooked a pot of hot soup and served a bowl to everyone.
"I've added some invigorating herbs here. Everyone should drink a bowl to avoid being attacked by evil spirits."
The message was sent to Ye Li, who accepted it and thanked her.
Just as he was about to drink, Chu Wei stood up.
"I'm going to look around. You all stay where you are and don't move."
Zhao Yaoguang got up as well, "This is all desert, it's hard to spot anything. I'll go with the sect leader."
"No need."
Chu Wei looked up at the distant starry sky. "I've been here before."
Watching his retreating figure, Ye Li's eyes flickered slightly.
As he walked further and further away, Ye Li closed her eyes and sat in meditation. In reality, her soul left her body and followed Chu Wei.
The night was quiet.
The wind had stopped, leaving only Chu Wei's footsteps kicking up the sand.
After walking for an unknown amount of time, Ye Li followed Chu Wei to a volcano.
The land here is a lifeless gray-black, as if it has been burned countless times by fire. The sand looks somewhat carbonized, dry and barren, with cracks resembling the jaws of ferocious beasts.
Soon, they arrived at the center.
Just as Ye Li was wondering what Chu Wei was doing here, he turned in her direction and suddenly called out.
"Master."
