Chapter 14 Roof Repair

The rain slowly stopped.

Jiang Wanyue took off her bamboo hat and said calmly, "It's really amazing, otherwise why would anyone be jealous?"

"You, you still rely on your father-in-law!" Lin Jin gritted his teeth and said, "Your father-in-law abuses his power and uses his power for personal gain. I will go to the commune to report him."

"Welcome to report." Jiang Wanyue curved her lips, "I'll wait for your good news."

She said, and walked away.

Lin Jin stamped his feet in anger.

Since she knew Jiang Wanyue became a teacher, she had asked around and found out that this position was obtained by exchanging her work as an agricultural technician, so it was useless to report it.

After all, it was because Jiang Wanyue married a good man. Even if the man died, she could use his work to find an easy job.

Not like her...

I have been alone for so many years, without anyone to rely on in the countryside. As I get older, the chances of returning to the city are becoming increasingly slim.

She watched the other educated youth get married one by one or find ways to return to the city, but she was the only one who wasted her youth.

"Lin Zhiqing, you are here." A man came up to her and handed her a basket. "These are fresh eggplants from the field. Take them home and eat them."

Lin Jin's expression was complicated.

The person in front of her is the son of the secretary of Xiaojing Brigade, Tian Dawei, who is the village scorekeeper and has been pursuing her.

Six years ago, after Tian Dawei pursued her to no avail, he turned around and married another educated youth from the next village. As a result, that educated youth died of severe hemorrhage during childbirth.

A year after his wife's death, Tian Dawei started pursuing her again.

She had not agreed to Tian Dawei's proposal at the beginning, and now that Tian Dawei was remarried and had a child, it was even more impossible for her to marry him.

But is there any better candidate than Tian Dawei, the son of the village party secretary?

Lin Jin sighed and took the eggplant: "Thank you."

Tian Dawei's face was full of joy.

In the past two years, no matter what he gave her, Lin Jin refused to accept it. This was the first time she accepted something from him.

He didn't dare to strike while the iron was hot, so he scratched his head and said, "Then you go ahead, I'm going to get busy."

After the rain stopped, the villagers of Xiaojing Brigade went to the fields again. The rice had to be harvested quickly, otherwise it would rot...

Jiang Wanyue also walked to the school.

Almost every classroom was leaking, especially the first grade, where the worst situation occurred. Many children’s books in their desks were wet.

She put the wet books away and opened them on the rainproof windowsill in the teacher's office, waiting for the sun to come out so that they could dry.

"Xiao Jiang, why are you here?"

Principal Zheng's voice suddenly sounded behind him.

Jiang Wanyue turned around and greeted with a smile: "It's raining, isn't it? I came to sort out the books for the children so that they won't have books for class tomorrow. Why is the principal here?"

Principal Zheng said, "I'm here to repair the roof of the classroom."

Jiang Wanyue then noticed that the principal was carrying a mud bucket in one hand and towing a cart piled with straw behind him.

She guessed that they might put thatch on the leaking area and then cover it with a layer of mud, but this was not a long-term solution after all.

"Principal, I'm here to help."

Although Jiang Wanyue doesn't know how to repair the roof, she can help.

She held the ladder and the principal climbed up. However, when he saw the condition on the roof, Principal Zheng frowned immediately: "Many tiles are broken. When strong winds blow in winter, the tiles may be blown off. It's too dangerous. The roof needs to be rebuilt."

Jiang Wanyue didn't understand either: "Then should we make up for it?"

"No more repairs." Principal Zheng came down from the ladder. "I will go to the river to collect more straw in the next few days. When the weather clears up, I will trouble you, Xiao Jiang, and Teacher Wan to help build the thatched roof."

Jiang Wanyue opened her lips to ask why the tiles were not laid, but thinking about the current situation of the school, she had to swallow the words back.

"By the way, I went to the next-door brigade tonight to ask about the music and art textbooks you mentioned yesterday." Principal Zheng sighed, "It's not just our Xiaojing Brigade. Several of the next-door brigades don't have music and art classes. They're all poor, and they all want to save as much as possible for the children. This is what I thought. Next time I go to the Education Bureau for a meeting, I'll borrow some books from someone, copy them down, and bring them back to you. How do you think?"

Jiang Wanyue frowned and thought for a moment.

If it is a Chinese and math book, you can certainly copy it.

But art is all about pictures, how can you copy it?

She paused for a moment and said, "Principal, why don't we go to the county town right now and buy a set of teaching materials from the Education Bureau."

Principal Zheng was stunned: "Now? Go to the Education Bureau?"

"Is there no money in the school account?" Jiang Wanyue asked, "If there is no money, just wait a few days. I will find a way to earn some money and then we can go again."

"No... there's still a few dollars in the account." Principal Zheng swallowed, "I mean, is it appropriate to go to the Education Bureau? Usually they only have meetings every semester..."

"The Education Bureau is the place that manages education. If we don't go to the Education Bureau, should we go to the Electricity Bureau?" Jiang Wanyue said, "Principal, go back and change your clothes. I'll go home and ask the team leader to write a note. We'll meet at the gate of the commune later."

Principal Zheng was sent home to change clothes with a confused look on his face.

Jiang Wanyue rushed home in a hurry.

First, she went to her father-in-law Song Dahai to get a note, then she kept three eggs at home, took out the rest, put them in a basket, and asked Song Huaizhi to go to the commune with her.

She came to sell eggs the day before yesterday, and came again two days later. Everyone knew there was a problem, so she asked Song Huaizhi to go in and sell them.

After a while, Song Huaizhi came out with an empty basket and two dollars.

Although the service attitude of the supply and marketing cooperatives was not very good these days, they were fair to everyone, and children were charged the same price when selling eggs.

"Huaizhi, take the empty basket back with you." Jiang Wanyue bent down and said to him, "We have sweet potato flour and rice at home. You can make some for my brothers and sisters at noon. I have to go to the county town and will be back later. You don't have to wait for me."

Song Huaizhi nodded: "Be careful on the road then."

"Don't worry." Jiang Wanyue couldn't help but ruffle his hair, "Go back quickly."

Song Huaizhi turned and left the supply and marketing cooperative. He walked to a corner, where he stopped and hid, looking in the direction of Jiang Wanyue.

It was not until he saw Principal Zheng coming and the two of them got on the bus that he started to head home.

Jiang Wanyue and Principal Zheng sat together in the last row. When the conductor came to collect the fare, she was about to pay when Principal Zheng pushed her hand down and said, "This is for the school. The school will pay for the fare."

She didn't argue, but just asked curiously: "Does the Education Bureau allocate funds to the school every year?"

"Two hundred yuan a year," Principal Zheng sighed. "Just to give subsidies to our three teachers, we have to spend one hundred and sixty or seventy yuan. The remaining money is used to buy notebooks, pens, chalk, etc. for teachers, and the fifth grade entrance examination fees, desk and chair repairs. If students get hurt in a fight at school, the school has to pay... It's not even November this year, and there's only a little over four yuan left in the account."

Jiang Wanyue: “…”

It's really not easy to be a principal with such a small amount of money to run a school. No wonder his hair and beard are all white at the age of only fifty. It's all because of all the worries!
