When Jiang Wanyue returned home, dinner was ready.
She took out some of the ingredients at home and put them in a basket under the table in the room. Song Huaizhi used white flour as the staple food and added eggs. She learned how to make dumpling soup like she did before and made white flour dumpling noodles with eggs and vegetables. It tasted quite good.
"Huaizhi, I'm going to sleep for a while. I have to get up at about twelve o'clock to go to school, and then set off to the county education bureau." Jiang Wanyue reminded, "After I leave, you lock the door and don't open it for anyone to come, understand?"
Song Huaizhi looked worried: "Will it be dangerous to go to the county town when it's so dark?"
"It's so dark and there's no one on the road, what danger could there be?" Jiang Wanyue was really tired. After she finished speaking, she fell on the bed and fell asleep.
Song Huazhi was still awake and making a fuss on the bed. Song Yunying covered his mouth and whispered, "Shh, Mom is asleep, and we should sleep too. Brother, blow out the kerosene lamp."
Song Huaizhi blew out the kerosene lamp and slept beside Jiang Wanyue.
The moonlight was cool, and the mother and her two children slowly fell asleep.
Jiang Wanyue was worried about something and didn't sleep well. Suddenly, she heard footsteps outside and she sat up straight with a start.
Then there was a knock on the door.
She thought she had overslept and Principal Zheng came to call someone, but when she opened the door, it was her mother-in-law Zhou Xiugui.
Zhou Xiugui whispered, "You are going to the Education Bureau later. I am worried about you not having an adult at home, so I will come and sleep at your place for half the night."
Jiang Wanyue was a little petrified.
She had a lot of supplies at home, such as the cotton her mother-in-law had given her before, which already filled a big bag and was stuffed under her bed. If her mother-in-law stayed here in the middle of the night, all her secrets would be lost.
"No need, mother." Jiang Wanyue said dryly, "Huaizhi is so old now, he will protect the family, it's okay."
"How old is he? He's only seven years old. What can he protect?" Zhou Xiugui squeezed into the door without saying anything. "Okay, wash your face and get going. Don't waste time and affect important things."
Jiang Wanyue had no choice but to say, "Then I'll go in and change my clothes first."
She entered the room and quickly locked some supplies into the cabinet. Some that could not fit had to be stuffed under the bed and then covered with some rags.
"Mom, what are you doing?"
Song Huaizhi was awakened by the rustling sound, and looked at Jiang Wanyue with sleepy eyes.
Fortunately, there was no light in the house, only the dim moonlight shining in, making it difficult to see clearly.
Jiang Wanyue said with a smile: "Looking for shoes. We must wear a pair of good shoes when we go to the Education Bureau, otherwise it will bring shame to our school."
I searched everywhere but couldn't find any shoes to wear when going out. I had two pairs of leather shoes, but they were too small. They should be the shoes I brought with me when I went to the countryside eight years ago. I was only a teenager at that time. I have grown taller and my feet have grown bigger in the past few years, so I can't wear them anymore.
In the end, I wore my everyday black cloth shoes with buckles.
"Huaizhi, your grandma is here, I'll leave first."
She touched the three children, opened the door and went out.
Zhou Xiugui pulled her back and stuffed something into her hand: "Hold it safe."
Jiang Wanyue took a look and found that it was actually a flashlight.
In later generations, flashlights are almost obsolete, but in this era, they are still a difficult item to buy. First, you need a ticket, second, they are expensive, and third, they require batteries to use, and country people don’t have that much money to buy batteries.
"Thank you, mother."
Jiang Wanyue thanked him sincerely and went out with the flashlight.
Xiaojing Village is particularly quiet at night. There are not so many insects chirping in the autumn night, only the rustling sound of wind blowing through the leaves.
Even with a flashlight, Jiang Wanyue still felt a little creepy.
She couldn't help but quicken her pace, and the journey that usually took half an hour was now completed in twenty minutes.
I saw that the principal had arrived long ago and was standing at the primary school gate. There were four fish baskets in front of him. Two of the fish baskets were carried on a shoulder pole, which just happened to fit on the back seat of a bicycle, but the bicycle had not arrived yet.
Jiang Wanyue asked the principal about the time, and it was already half past twelve.
It takes about four hours to ride a bicycle to the county, and the goods must be delivered before eight o'clock in the morning, so they still have seven and a half hours.
Fortunately, after waiting for only a dozen minutes, I heard the sound of car wheels.
Lin Jin and Tian Dawei, each riding a bicycle, slowly appeared in the night.
Tian Dawei explained: "The chain of this bicycle fell off on the road. I fixed the chain, but I was afraid that your chain would fall off halfway and affect the whole thing, so I rode home to add oil, so I was delayed for a while."
After he said that, he hurried forward and loaded the fish basket into the car with Principal Zheng.
A bike was carrying 100 kilograms of fish, which was roughly the weight of an adult sitting in the back. When Jiang Wanyue got on the bike, she almost lost her balance and fell into the ditch.
Tian Dawei quickly held onto the bicycle and said, "Jiang Zhiqing, can you do it?"
Lin Jin followed up and said, "If it really doesn't work, don't try to be brave, just let me go."
Jiang Wanyue is a person who never gives up.
If anyone dares to say that she is not capable, she will prove it to them.
She sat on the bicycle again, holding the handlebars with both hands, looking forward with her eyes, and pushed down with her right foot. The bicycle moved forward, but it swayed from side to side and kept shaking. She tried hard to steady the direction without moving her feet, and finally, after shaking a few times, the bicycle became stable.
Principal Zheng also followed on his bicycle.
There was no street light on the road, and the entire road was illuminated by moonlight.
Jiang Wanyue couldn't tell the direction, so she let Principal Zheng go in front and she followed behind.
After riding for only about half an hour, Jiang Wanyue felt that she didn't have the strength to pedal anymore. However, she didn't stop and continued riding forward.
After passing the commune and reaching the main road to the county town, there were finally sporadic street lights. There were no pedestrians or bicycles on the road, only an occasional truck speeding past.
