Sang Shen kept his word and went to his brother the next day, asking him to introduce him to someone. Although he didn't know where to find someone, his brother did.
His brother knowing is the same as him knowing.
Seeing the joy shining through her younger brother's eyes, Sangzi raised an eyebrow. She knew immediately it was related to Buling. Seeing how happy her brother was, she realized he'd fallen for that girl.
Thinking back to their previous meeting, Sangzi didn't say anything, but gave him an address: "People in this village take on this kind of work, but you'll have to provide the bricks and tiles yourself."
Sangshen deftly stuffed the note into her pocket: "I'll go find Xie Dong and see if he can help."
"Come back, I'll figure something out for you. Xie Dong got the bricks and tiles through shady means; do you want to cause trouble for that woman?" He knew about the courtyard house his brother lived in; any little disturbance there would become known throughout the entire courtyard, even the whole alley, and the whole county.
If there are bricks and tiles of dubious origin, wouldn't that be asking people to find fault with us?
"Hehehe, thanks bro. Get there as soon as possible, preferably today. I'm off now." With that, he dashed out of the government building, hopped on his bicycle, and headed towards the village his brother had mentioned.
Sangzi looked out the window at his younger brother's cheerful figure, smiled and shook his head. He was still so childish. Then, as if remembering something, his smile faded, and he sighed. He wondered how Xiao Ci was doing; he'd go see him another day.
Once Bling said he would hand it over to Sangs, he completely let go and let him do whatever he wanted.
Unexpectedly, when she got off work the next evening, there was a pile of red bricks in front of her door. When Sangshen saw Buling return, she immediately came out of the house: "Buling, give me your house key. I'll find someone to build a firewall tomorrow. Put all your valuables away tonight. Also, what are you going to do with your bed?"
The little black girl's room is too small, there's not enough space.
"Can we put it in your room first? I think there'll be enough space. We'll figure out what to do with it after everything's settled." She really didn't want to lose it; the bed was only six months old.
“Okay, you can put all your things in my room, and move them back after the renovation is finished.” Sangshen naturally agreed: “Also, you need to find a place to sleep for the next few days. No one can live in this room for a week.”
“That’s easy. I’ll sleep with Sister Yuanyuan. Her room has a heated kang bed, and it’s warm.”
Wu Yuanyuan, who was standing to the side, finally got a chance to speak: "Buling, are you going to renovate the house?"
This question almost voiced everyone's thoughts.
Ever since Sangshen started carrying bricks into the yard, they'd wanted to ask, but that kid Sangshen was tight-lipped, and they hadn't gotten a word out.
"Yes, I'm planning to build a heated kang (traditional Chinese bed). It's too cold in winter; I probably wouldn't be able to stand it without one," Buling explained simply.
Aunt Lan: "Old Tian agreed?" When did she become so agreeable? Wasn't this room reserved for her grandson's wedding? He just let this young girl squander it like that?
Apart from the Tie and Wu families who knew the inside story, everyone else thought the same as Aunt Lan.
Bling didn't say anything, just smiled and nodded. As for the rest, he said, "You can guess for yourself."
She won't announce that she's bought the house. She's already attracted enough attention in the past six months; she'd rather keep a low profile now.
Everyone took Buling's behavior as tacit acceptance. Aunt Lan was a little envious; if it hadn't been for this girl interfering, they would be renting this room now.
Of course, she didn't intend to give any money. They were neighbors, so what was wrong with lending them her spare room?
Pretending not to see the different thoughts on everyone's minds, Bu Ling smiled and said to Sang Shen, "I'll give you the key tomorrow, you can decide what to do with it."
Sangshen nodded, quite pleased with the little black girl's trust.
"Buling, you and Xiao Sang, the two of you?"
Buling said frankly, "I have to go to work and don't have time, but Sangshen happens to be free, so I asked him to keep an eye on things for me." She said this with complete candor.
This made the older women, who wanted to tease the two young people, too embarrassed to say anything.
"I don't think so, Xiao Bu. Are you dating Xiao Sang?" It was Aunt Lan again: "Listen to me. You're still young. You can't date so early. A girl should respect and love herself."
Buling was almost amused by Aunt Lan's shamelessness: "Aunt Lan, this isn't the time for you to introduce me to your nephew from your own family. What, was I already grown up back then?"
Upon hearing this, Sangshen glared at Granny Lan with lightning-fast eyes; someone was trying to steal him away.
Aunt Lan didn't know how to answer for a moment, her mouth opening and closing.
Bu Ling wasn't in the mood to argue with her. Seeing that she had calmed down, she told Wu Yuanyuan and Sang Shen, then pushed her bicycle back into the house.
Sangzhen glanced at Aunt Lan and went back inside. Luckily, he moved in!
Those watching could all see something about the relationship between Buling and Sangshen, but since they hadn't said it explicitly, they didn't dare to make fun of it. They gave Granny Lan a mocking look and then went about their own business.
For the next few days, Sangshen went to the government building every day to clock in, and then returned to the compound to keep an eye on the house that Buling was renovating.
The people who built the firewalls were found in Hongshan Village. The village has a construction team that comes out to look for work every winter, so they are not opposed to this kind of work.
Sang Shen was generous, paying the workers daily and even providing a meal. This inspired the honest men to work even harder, and the three of them finished building the heated wall and kang (a traditional heated platform bed) in just three days.
Sangshen inspected their work and expressed her satisfaction. She then asked them to paint the walls a coat of white paint, making the space bright and clean.
He readily paid the three men for the last day's work and then helped them find another job. With that, the house renovation was complete.
When Buling came home from get off work in the evening, she looked at the greatly transformed house and was quite satisfied. However, she couldn't move into the heated kang (a traditional Chinese bed-stove) right away. After thinking for a moment, she asked, "Do you know where to buy firewood?"
