Chapter 15 State-Run Restaurants

After shopping at the department store, the three drove to the supply and marketing cooperative.

Supply and marketing cooperatives usually sell small items such as needles, thread, brown sugar, and white sugar.

My grandmother used to say that most of the people who shopped at the supply and marketing cooperatives were farmers. The things in the department stores were too expensive for them to afford, but the supply and marketing cooperatives were just right, selling things that they needed most.

The three of them walked around for a while and then lost interest. Mainly because none of them were homebodies, they weren't interested in anything there.

Only Liang Boda took a liking to a red hair clip and readily paid for it under Bu Yi's strange gaze.

Clutching the hair clip in his large hand, he happily skipped out of the supply and marketing cooperative.

"Old Bu, what do you think? Isn't it beautiful?" Liang Boda said smugly, holding it up in front of Bu Yi with a look of pride.

Looking at the bright red and green ribbon bow hair clip, Buyi couldn't bring himself to nod against his conscience, so he turned his head away and pretended not to see it.

Unexpectedly, Liang Boda reached out and clipped the hair clip onto Bu Ling's braid.

Bling: "..."

Buyi: "..."

Liang Boda admired it with a smug look, feeling that his taste was indeed excellent.

"My sister looks really good in it," Liang Boda said with a smug look.

Bling: "…………"

He must have been praising me, right?

Bu Yi turned his head away, unable to bear watching, covered his mouth with his fist, and laughed silently and quickly a few times.

Liang Boda, completely oblivious to the strange atmosphere, glanced at the time and said, "It's getting late, almost twelve o'clock. Shall we go to the state-run restaurant for something to eat?"

"Let's go to that place in the east of the city. Their braised pork ribs are especially delicious. Let's take Lingling to try it." Bu Yi agreed wholeheartedly.

“Yes, yes, let my sister see where she will be working in the future,” Liang Boda said.

Bu Ling's eyes flashed; it really was a state-run restaurant.

"Brother, do I still have my job?" Bu Ling asked, feigning surprise.

Seeing his sister's anxious look, Buyi wanted to pat her head, but then he thought of something and changed his mind to patting her, saying, "Don't worry, with your brother here, there's nothing I can't handle."

Bu Ling smiled, pursing her lips.

Bu Ling actually has very delicate features: an oval face, almond-shaped eyes, a high nose bridge, and a small dimple on the right side of her cheek. She's not a great beauty, but she's definitely a pretty girl.

"Our little sister is just a bit thin, a bit dark-skinned, and a bit short. With proper care, she'll actually be quite pretty," Liang Boda said to Bu Yi, his eyes crinkling with a smile.

Bling's smile vanished instantly.

The first three points are unnecessary; she'll be happier if you just say the last sentence.

“Come on, Lingling, your brother will take you to eat,” Bu Yi said. After taking a few steps, he solemnly said to Bu Ling, “Don’t listen to Liang Boda’s nonsense. My sister is beautiful no matter what.”

Bu Ling nodded heavily, looking like his brother was right. As for Liang Boda, he was just being cheeky.

The three drove straight to the state-run restaurant. Liang Boda parked the car on the side of the road. As soon as she got out of the car, Bu Ling remembered the dream she had on the train.

Just like now, she stood by the roadside, watching people come and go in the state-run restaurant.

Seeing his younger sister standing there blankly by the roadside, Liang Boda waved his hand in front of her eyes. "Little sister, what are you daydreaming about? Are you starving?"

When Bu Ling came to her senses and heard Liang Boda's words, she had already become indifferent.

Honestly, with Liang Boda's foul mouth, he'll get beaten up someday.

Bu Yi pushed Liang Boda aside and said to Bu Ling, "Come on, let's go inside. There won't be any seats if there are too many people later."

State-run restaurants were the most luxurious restaurants of that era, bar none; their food was always in short supply.

If you arrive late, they've sold out of meat dishes. There's nothing you can do but either wait for the next meal and come earlier, or just eat the vegetarian dishes.

The three sat in a corner near the window, looking at the small blackboard hanging on the wall, which read: Today's offerings: braised pork belly, braised spare ribs, braised pig's trotters, braised pig's head meat, stir-fried shredded potatoes, clear soup noodles, and beef noodles.

"Lingling, what would you like to eat?" Buyi asked Buling, who was sitting next to him.

"Yes, yes, little sister, you order. Old Bu and I are fine with whatever we eat," Liang Boda chimed in.

After a moment's thought, Bu Ling said, "Braised pork ribs, braised pig's head meat, stir-fried shredded potatoes, and I'd like a bowl of beef noodles."

Three dishes were more than enough for three people. She had already satisfied her craving for pork on the train, so she wasn't as hungry for it now.

After ordering, Bu Ling looked at the two grown men and asked, "Brother, Liang Boda, brother, is this alright?" She wasn't sure if they would be full.

"It's okay, we can order more if it's not enough. I'll have a bowl of beef noodles. Lao Liang, what about you?" Bu Yi said nonchalantly.

Liang Boda was still basking in the sweet joy of Bu Ling calling him "brother," and didn't react to Bu Yi's question.

Seeing his expression, Bu Yi ignored him and decided to have only three bowls of beef noodles. If Liang Boda didn't like beef noodles, he would pack them up and take them back for Lingling to eat that night.

"Lingling, wait here for a moment, I'll go order." With that, Bu Yi stood up and walked towards the food delivery window.

Looking at the waiters of state-run restaurants in this era, Bu Ling realized they weren't as exaggerated as the old stories described, with their noses in the air and a disdainful look on their faces.

Uh... the version of herself in her dream was an accident.

This is where Bu Ling's knowledge is blind. Waiters had a secure job in this era, especially in state-run restaurants, so of course they had the right to be arrogant.

But the man wasn't stupid either. The gleaming military uniform on Bu Yi reminded her that this man was not someone to be trifled with.

The waitress at the state-run restaurant was a woman in her thirties. She smiled warmly and said to Bu Yi, "Braised pork ribs are 1.5 yuan plus half a jin of meat coupons, braised pig's head is 1.2 yuan plus half a jin of meat coupons, stir-fried shredded potatoes are 4 mao a serving, no coupons required, and beef noodles are 8 mao a bowl plus 3 liang of grain coupons. All these dishes are 5.5 yuan plus one jin of meat coupons and 9 liang of grain coupons. Comrade, please wait a moment, I will call you when the food is ready."
