The next day, Buyi got up early to buy breakfast at the canteen. After Buling got up, the two ate breakfast and drove the jeep to the county town.
Liang Boda didn't come this time. Buyi said that Liang Boda's vacation ended yesterday and he should return to the team today.
Sitting in the passenger seat of the jeep, watching the scenery rushing past on both sides of the road, Bling felt more relaxed than ever before. Her transmigrated life was finally on track.
The two headed straight for the Public Security Bureau with a clear goal in mind. This morning, when buying breakfast, Bu Yi asked his comrades about the locations of all the important buildings in the county, just to avoid a repeat of yesterday's embarrassing situation.
The police officers were incredibly efficient; in less than ten minutes, Bu Ling's household registration was completed. Holding the newly issued household registration certificate, Bu Ling smiled, revealing a set of small white teeth.
“Next, I need to go back to Los Angeles to transfer the food rations,” Bu Ling said.
“No need, I’ll have Instructor Sang transfer you, so you don’t have to go back,” Bu Yi refused. He didn’t want his sister to go back to Luocheng at all.
When Buling heard that this was another way to do it, she immediately agreed. Actually, she didn't really want to go back. "Should I send my household registration certificate to Uncle Sangli?"
Bu Yi shook his head: "Don't send it, it's easy to get lost. My boss is going to Los Angeles on a business trip the day after tomorrow, so I'll have him take it with him."
"Wouldn't that be inappropriate?" Buling asked hesitantly. This was their leader, after all.
"It's okay, I'm here, don't worry." Bu Yi said nonchalantly.
Bling was indeed relieved.
After registering their household registration, the brother and sister went to the department store together and bought a bamboo-woven thermos. Buling mainly disliked the bright red thermos, as it was too eye-catching.
There were also bicycles. The two went up to the second floor to ask, and the uncle at the bicycle counter told them that there were no women's bicycles in the county town, and they would have to go to the city or province to buy them.
"Brother, why don't we buy one? I can ride any kind of bicycle," Buling said, though her height didn't match the bicycle she was riding.
"Don't worry, I have a plan, don't fret." Bu Yi ruffled his sister's hair. He knew that riding this kind of bicycle was too strenuous for his sister, and that a women's bicycle would be more convenient.
He planned to go to the provincial capital tomorrow to buy a bicycle for his sister, but he didn't say anything because he was afraid she wouldn't agree.
Unable to buy a bicycle, the brother and sister left the department store carrying a thermos.
"Brother, where are we going now?" Bu Ling asked from the car.
"I'll rent you a place. Would you like an apartment building or a bungalow?" Bu Yi said gently.
Buling thought about the apartment buildings of this era, which offered no privacy whatsoever. If you talked in your sleep at night, the neighbors could hear everything clearly. "Brother, I prefer bungalows."
Bu Yi nodded. "Let's go to the neighborhood office and ask if there are any bungalows for rent in the county town." If they were locals, they could ask their relatives and friends, but since the brother and sister were newcomers, they could only ask the neighborhood office.
The residential area is divided into two parts: one part consists of apartment buildings, and the remaining two-thirds consist of single-story houses.
When the Bu siblings inquired, Sister Wang from the neighborhood office was very enthusiastic, saying, "Now every household has not enough houses to live in, and there are very few empty houses for rent."
Seeing the siblings' disappointed expressions, she quickly added, "I know a house that's currently available for rent. It's a single-story house with many friendly neighbors, perfect for a young girl like your sister who lives alone."
Buyi looked at his younger sister, wanting her to make the decision.
"Sister Wang, can we go take a look before making a decision?" Buling asked.
“Sure, why not? Wait a moment, I’ll tell my colleague and we’ll go take you to see it,” Sister Wang said warmly.
Seeing this, Bu Yi very tactfully handed Sister Wang a handful of candy. They had bought it at the department store yesterday. He had big hands, so there must have been more than a dozen candies in that handful.
Sister Wang glanced at them, her smile becoming even more genuine. She exchanged a few words with her colleagues and then led the brother and sister out of the neighborhood office.
"Sister Wang, let's get in our car," Bu Yi said.
When Sister Wang saw the military jeep parked by the roadside, she readily agreed with a smile. It was her first time riding in a military vehicle, and she couldn't miss it.
Following the directions given by Sister Wang, Bu Yi parked his car in front of a courtyard house.
Bu Ling got out of the car and opened the door for Sister Wang, preventing her from feeling embarrassed because she didn't know how to open the door.
Sister Wang was very pleased, thinking the girl was really sensible, and that if she lived here in the future, she would definitely take good care of her.
After getting off the bus, she explained to the brother and sister, "This is Yangliu Hutong. This hutong is full of these courtyard houses. It is said that it used to be a gathering place for high-ranking officials. After liberation, it was distributed to us ordinary people. Now, it is inhabited by workers who were assigned here by the organization. This courtyard has houses that are rented out. It is a two-courtyard house. Most of the people living there are workers from the machinery factory. There are not many people, and it is not too chaotic. It is just right for a young lady to live here. You don't need to worry about safety."
Seeing the military uniform on Buyi, she added, "Moreover, the only owners of this house are the grandmother and grandson, both of whom are reasonable people."
"Grandma and grandson? How old is the grandson?" Bu Yi asked. If the grandson was old, his sister would not be able to live here.
Sister Wang knew exactly what he was worried about. "His grandson is only six years old. Sister Tian, the owner of the house, has a son who is a martyr. It's very difficult for her to raise her grandson alone, so she wants to rent out the extra rooms in her house to supplement her family's income." Their neighborhood office also takes good care of this grandmother and grandson, so the first house they recommended was Sister Tian's.
When Bu Yi and Bu Ling heard the word "martyr," they exchanged a glance and saw respect in each other's eyes.
Buling thought that if there were no problems with the house, she would rent it. She originally wanted to rent a detached house with its own yard, but when she went to the neighborhood office to ask, she realized that she had made a mistake.
