That evening, Lao Xiang told Bu Yi to wait patiently and then went out.
Bu Yi sat in the house for a short while before hearing a commotion outside. Then, Lao Xiang quickly ran back into the house and whispered, "Hurry up, there are only ten minutes left. I'll take you there!"
Bu Yi nodded, then followed Lao Xiang and ran quickly in one direction. When they arrived at a rough mud-brick house, Lao Xiang said, "This is it. There's no one inside. Hurry up." As he spoke, he handed Bu Yi some medicine.
Bu Yi took it without saying much and quickly went into the house.
The room was dimly lit, but Bu Yi had excellent night vision and spotted the two emaciated old men lying on the kang (a heated brick bed). He paused for a moment, then quickly walked over and whispered, "Professor Zhang, Professor Tao?"
One of the men heard the noise and struggled to open his eyes. In the darkness, he saw a blurry figure above him, which startled him so much that his pupils constricted. Upon seeing this, Buyi quickly said, "It's me, Buyi."
The woman on the other side opened her eyes upon hearing their conversation, and parted her dry, cracked lips: "Xiao Yi?"
Bu Yi helped the two elderly people up one by one, and without wasting any words, said directly: "Professor Zhang, Professor Tao, we are short on time, so let's get straight to the point. I brought you some money and cotton-padded clothes this time."
As he spoke, he took out two worn-out cotton-padded coats from the bundle behind him and handed one to each of the two elderly people: "The money and coupons are inside, don't be stingy with them. If you run out, I'll find a way to send you more." He had prepared these cotton-padded coats long ago and planned to send them over.
"Also, here's some medicine for your injuries. You need to apply it." Bu Yi then handed the medicine that Lao Xiang had given him to Professor Tao.
Feeling that the time was almost up, he said in a low but quick voice, "Professor Tao, Professor Zhang, hang in there. I will find a way to transfer you out. Please hang in there, please, please think of Tao Tao."
After saying that, without waiting for the two to react, he gave them a deep look and quickly left the house. When Lao Xiang, who was keeping watch outside, saw Bu Yi come out, he didn't waste any words and quickly returned along the same route.
Back inside, the two took off their clothes, lay down on the bed, and closed their eyes to sleep.
The two had barely covered themselves with the blankets for two minutes when there was a loud banging on the door:
"Open the door! Open the door! Open the door now!"
Lao Xiang and Bu Yi opened their eyes at the same time. They looked at each other and Lao Xiang cursed, "Damn it, who is it, calling out to my soul in the middle of the night!"
The people outside kept banging on the door.
Old Xiang stood up angrily, not even bothering to put on his clothes, and flung open the door with a bang: "What are you doing? What trouble have you caused again? You'd better give me a reasonable explanation, or I'll twist your heads off and use them as footballs!" He fired off a barrage of questions, giving no one a chance to speak.
Those outside felt a little short of breath when they saw him like this, but then they straightened up again, thinking of the people behind them: "Deputy Regiment Commander Xiang, I heard that one of your comrades came to our farm today. Where is your comrade?"
Bu Yi stepped out from behind Lao Xiang at the opportune moment: "Looking for me?"
The man outside scanned Bu Yi from head to toe. Seeing that his hair was disheveled, his eyes were slightly sleepy, and he was only wearing thermal underwear, half of his suspicions were dispelled, and his tone softened considerably.
"Deputy Regiment Commander, it's like this, our factory director was attacked by thugs, and today you're the only outsider on the farm, so... we hope you'll understand!" the man outside said, neither too soft nor too hard.
To everyone's surprise, Lao Xiang burst into laughter after hearing this: "Serves you right! You deserve it!"
"Deputy Regiment Commander, you..."
Old Xiang slammed the door shut: "Get out! Don't bother me while I'm sleeping. If that bastard Xu Yinghui dies, then come and call me for his funeral!"
"To the deputy regimental commander..."
"roll!"
After a while, the people outside the door finally left. Lao Xiang listened to the door for a while, then opened a crack in the door to peek inside before giving Bu Yi a reassuring gesture.
The two walked to the table and sat down. Bu Yicai asked softly, "Are you alright?"
Lao Xiang waved his hand: "It's alright. Our regimental commander has also disliked that bastard for a long time. Xu Yinghui has no say in my affairs."
"So, you really did it?" Buyi asked, amused.
Old Xiang raised an eyebrow smugly: "Of course, I've disliked that bastard for a long time, this is killing two birds with one stone!"
Bu Yi gave him a thumbs up: "You're amazing!"
"It's so rare to hear a word of praise from you!" Old Xiang exclaimed.
Bu Yi rolled his eyes at him: "Alright, stop joking around, go to sleep, I have to get up early to catch the train tomorrow."
"You're going back tomorrow?"
Bu Yi nodded. "The two elders aren't doing well. I need to transfer them away as soon as possible, otherwise..."
Old Xiang sighed heavily: "We need to hurry."
After a long pause, he suddenly asked again, "You haven't forgotten Tao Tao yet?"
Lao Xiang and Bu Yi were classmates and comrades-in-arms who carried out classified missions together. They were also among the same group of people who were transferred together. However, after the declassification period, these comrades-in-arms went their separate ways. Only Bu Yi and Liang Boda were lucky enough to be assigned to the same group.
He was three years older than Bu Yi and had always treated him like a younger brother. They had all witnessed his past with Tao Tao.
In the darkness, Bu Yi remained silent for quite some time, so long that Lao Xiang thought he wouldn't answer. Then, his voice drifted out: "Forgot... right?"
Lao Xiang felt a sharp pang of sadness, but he didn't know how to comfort him. He could only say, "Tao Tao wouldn't want to see you like this."
Bu Yi smiled indifferently: "Anyway, she can't control me anymore."
Just as Lao Xiang was about to say something, Bu Yi said, "By the way, let's not talk about me. What about you? Have you found a wife yet?"
