Just as Auntie was excitedly preparing for the blind date, her comrade's daughter arrived at the door with her suitcase.
Auntie was returning from grocery shopping when she ran into a hesitant figure at the alley entrance. "Hua Xin, why did you come alone? Where's Xiao Si?"
Li Huaxin, the daughter of a comrade-in-arms, immediately put away her disappointment upon seeing Aunt Sang, saying, "Auntie, Brother Sang Zi is so busy, he doesn't need to pick me up. I can find my way myself!"
Then, seeing the vegetables in her aunt's hands, she said, "Aunt, let me help you carry them." She reached out her hand as she spoke.
Auntie dodged slightly: "No need for you. You must be tired from the train journey. Now that we're home, go back to your room and rest for a while. I'll cook you a big meal tonight."
Li Huaxin didn't insist: "Thank you, Auntie, your cooking is the best."
"Auntie? You went grocery shopping? Perfect timing! My mom sent me a lot of radishes, and I was just about to bring them to you. This saves me the trouble." Now that they're more familiar with each other, Jiang Wanying isn't so introverted anymore.
She was carrying a basket filled with several white radishes: "These were just pulled from the ground, they're so fresh, they're delicious in soups, dumplings, or buns."
"Alright, Auntie won't stand on ceremony. Bring Dongzi over for dinner tonight, Auntie will cook a big meal." Auntie Sang accepted the basket without hesitation.
"Okay!" Jiang Wanying readily agreed.
"Oh, right, this is Li Huaxin, she's two years older than you, you should call her Sister Huaxin. She's the daughter of my uncle's comrade-in-arms." Auntie suddenly remembered and introduced her to Jiang Wanying.
When facing outsiders, Jiang Wanying reverted to her shy demeanor: "Hello, Sister Huaxin."
"Hua Xin, this is Xie Dong's wife, Jiang Wanying. You can just call her Wanying," the aunt said, pointing to Jiang Wanying.
Li Huaxin was very kind: "Hello, Wanying."
After giving the two a brief introduction, Aunt Sang didn't mince words: "It's terribly cold, Xiao Jiang, you go inside, we'll head back now."
"Okay." Jiang Wanying smiled, turned around and went home.
Aunt took Li Huaxin home.
After arriving home, her aunt cooked Li Huaxin a bowl of dumplings. After she finished eating, she forced her to go to sleep, and then she went to the kitchen to prepare the groceries she had bought.
She took this blind date very seriously, preparing two meat dishes and four vegetable dishes, plus a radish soup – this was definitely a high-class affair.
When Buling came home from get off work in the evening, her aunt was busy in the kitchen.
Seeing this, Bu Ling first went back into the house to check on her daughter, covered her with a blanket, and then took off her coat and went into the kitchen: "Auntie, let me help you."
"Lingling, you're back? Why so early today?" Auntie only noticed that Lingling had returned when she heard her voice.
"Yes, the food sold out quickly today. I came back as soon as I was done." Buling added some hot water and washed her hands. "Auntie, let me cut it. You can go do other things."
"Okay, the meat is ready. I'll make braised pork, which you all love," Auntie said with a smile.
"Auntie is the best," Bu Ling said sweetly. "By the way, how did your blind date go, brother?"
Just as Aunt Sang was about to speak, the sound of a bicycle bell came from the doorway: "Lingling, Aunt, I'm back."
Upon hearing this, Auntie immediately put down her bowl and rushed out of the kitchen: "Xiaoqi, keep your voice down, Huaxin is still asleep."
After being scolded, Sangshen gave a pitiful "Oh," parked her bicycle in the shed, and, as before, went back inside to check on her precious daughter before quietly sneaking into the kitchen.
Hua Hin?
"It's your uncle's comrade-in-arms' daughter, sleeping inside," the aunt explained simply.
"Where's my older brother?" Bu Ling asked curiously.
"Who knew he wouldn't show up all afternoon? Luckily, the girl is clever and managed to find her home, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to explain it to her parents!" Aunt Sang said resentfully.
Then, seeing Mulberry obediently chopping vegetables beside her, she finally found an outlet for her resentment: "Xiao Qi, where's your brother?"
Sangshen shook his head: "I don't know. I haven't seen him all day. I thought he went to pick someone up as you said." He looked quite innocent.
"Really?" His aunt looked at him suspiciously.
Mulberry blinked sincerely: "Really."
"That had to be for the best." Auntie scoffed, "If I found out you two were conspiring to deceive me..."
"How could that be?" Sangshen asked with a forced smile.
Aunt Sang didn't know whether she believed it or not. After seeing the oil in the pan heat up, she poured the meat from the bowl into it. "By the way, Xiao Qi, stop chopping vegetables here. Go to your brother's house and see if he's back. If he is, bring him over."
As she spoke, her aunt snatched the kitchen knife from Sangshen's hand and pushed him out: "Remember, find your brother and bring him back. If you can't find him, don't come back either!"
Just then, Xie Dong and Jiang Wanying arrived. Seeing this scene, Xie Dong laughed and said, "Did Xiao Qi make Auntie angry again?"
Mulberry glared at him: "You can't expect anything good to come out of a dog's mouth!"
The aunt ignored the two arguing: "Perfect, Dongzi, you go with Xiaoqi and drag him over from Xiaosi's place!"
"Huh?" Xie Dong asked, puzzled.
"Just go when I tell you to! I'll explain when you get back." Auntie pushed Xie Dong out of the yard as well.
"Wanying, go inside and sit down. Dinner will be ready soon," Auntie said, not forgetting to greet Jiang Wanying when she returned.
"Let me help you," Jiang Wanying said, and went into the kitchen instead.
"No need for you, we're almost done, don't get involved," Auntie hurriedly refused.
Jiang Wanying was rejected and stood in the kitchen, feeling somewhat helpless. Seeing her like this, Bu Ling said, "Sister-in-law Jiang, could you go inside and check if Xiaoxing is awake? If she is, please call me."
