Chapter 36 The Courtyard Shakes

Outside the door, Brother Wu and his wife had vanished without a trace. Buling returned to her room, lit the coal stove, boiled a kettle of water, filled the thermos, washed up, and went to sleep, completely unaware of the rapidly spreading rumors about her.

The incident started like this: Sister-in-law Lu and Brother Wu were kicked out of the house. Brother Wu pulled Sister-in-law Lu aside and said this and that, until Sister-in-law Lu calmed down, but she was still very indignant: "Your parents are just senile. They gave me a job, and it stayed with our family, but if you give it to your sister, it'll belong to someone else."

Brother Wu nodded in agreement: "I guess it's not appropriate to talk about these things in front of that girl, Bu Ling. After all, she's the one who found the job. It would be too embarrassing for us to scheme in front of her. We can talk to Mom and Dad after she leaves. Even if it's just for Xiao Qiu's sake, Mom and Dad won't disagree."

Sister-in-law Lu looked at her husband with admiration: "Honey, you're right."

Brother Wu smiled smugly. As the only son of the Wu family, of course the good stuff should be his.

Sister-in-law Lu suddenly asked worriedly, "What if that girl Buling doesn't want to?" After all, it was Buling who found the girl.

Brother Wu said confidently, "Don't worry, she won't."

Seeing that Sister-in-law Wu looked completely bewildered, he explained, "Why do you think that girl gave the job to Yuanyuan? It's all for my dad. My dad is the head of the management office, and she wanted to curry favor with him. So, the job is for our family, not for Wu Yuanyuan."

Sister-in-law Lu: "Husband, you're so clever."

While the two were plotting their scheme, they were completely oblivious to their surroundings. You can imagine the shock that Aunt Lan, who habitually eavesdropped next door, felt upon hearing their conversation.

Wu Yuanyuan has a job?

Was it that girl, Bling, who found it for you?

Does that brat Buling have that much power?

As for the couple's scheming about this job, Aunt Lan didn't see anything wrong with it. She thought it was how things should be; what job does a girl need? She's going to get married anyway. Like the girls in her family, who could send grain home after going to the countryside—that's how it should be, isn't it?

The couple went back to their room, keeping an eye on their parents' room until they heard Bu Ling leave. They exchanged a glance and then knocked on Grandpa Wu's door.

I don't know how the family of five talked, but in her half-asleep state, Bu Ling only heard Grandpa Wu roar two words: "Get out!" before falling back asleep.

The next morning, when Buling went out to wash up, she felt that everyone she met looked strange. For example, the old woman Lan, whom she didn't get along with, had a particularly kind smile on her face, which gave Buling goosebumps.

"Little Buling, why don't you come to my house for dinner tonight?" Granny Lan invited warmly.

Bling looked at her with a curious expression.

Despite the strange looks from Bu Ling, Aunt Lan still smiled broadly.

Finally, Bling found it too offensive and looked away, saying, "No, Aunt Lan, I can't accept something for nothing." Your sudden 180-degree turn in attitude is rather startling.

Granny Lan wasn't annoyed by the rejection: "It's alright, I just wanted to invite you to a meal so we can get to know each other better."

Buling: "Forget it!" She felt she had nothing to be close to Aunt Lan.

Seeing that Aunt Lan was about to say something, Bu Ling immediately said, "Aunt Lan, I can't talk to you anymore, I have to go to work, I'm going to be late." After saying that, she quickly went into the house.

Granny Lan glanced regretfully at Bu Ling's door, a hint of annoyance flashing in her eyes. If she had known that brat Bu Ling was so formidable, she wouldn't have offended her in the first place. How could a house compare to a job? If they had a job, what kind of house couldn't they afford? A resolute glint appeared in her cloudy old eyes; she wouldn't give up. For a house, for a job, Lan Butterfly, you can do it! She's just a little girl; she refuses to believe she can't win her over.

Under the kind and friendly gazes of everyone in the courtyard, Bu Ling carried Wu Yuanyuan out of the gate. Only after she could no longer feel the sticky stares behind her did she breathe a sigh of relief.

Wu Yuanyuan mocked her: "Are you really that scared?"

While struggling to ride her bicycle, Bu Ling said, "You don't understand. This morning, Aunt Lan smiled at me so brightly and even invited me to her house for dinner tonight. I even suspect she might have poisoned my food, trying to kill me." After all, her relationship with Aunt Lan hadn't reached the point where she'd invite her to dinner.

Wu Yuanyuan was amused by her description and laughed for a while before rubbing her face and saying, "What are you thinking? I think Aunt Lan really wants to invite you to dinner."

Bu Ling shook his head rapidly: "Impossible. I have an old grudge against Aunt Lan. How could she possibly genuinely want to invite me to dinner?"

Wu Yuanyuan put her arm around Bu Ling's waist and looked at the large tree so close to her: "Slow down."

With a swift swerve, the bicycle narrowly avoided the large tree.

Wu Yuanyuan patted her chest with lingering fear: "I must learn to ride a bicycle as soon as possible, otherwise my life will be in danger."

Bling said irritably from the front, "How can you blame me? It's your fault for being too heavy."

Wu Yuanyuan rolled her eyes, didn't argue with her, and continued the previous topic: "Aunt Lan wants to invite you to dinner, probably because there's something you can do for her, and she wants you to find a job for her family."

Buling: "What? Isn't she overestimating me? My brother found me this job, how could I possibly find a job for her family?"

Wu Yuanyuan said, "But if you find me a job, they'll assume you can find them jobs too."

Bu Ling was speechless: "This job of yours is really a coincidence. If I had other relatives here, how could it have fallen into your lap?" She added, "Besides, I didn't find it. I just knew about it in advance. If you don't pass Manager Zhu's interview, there's nothing I can do."

Wu Yuanyuan also knew this, "They must be blinded by work."

Only then did Bu Ling realize why everyone in the compound had been so friendly to her today—they were hoping she would find them jobs. What a huge misunderstanding!

However: "How did the people in the hospital find out about this? Was it because of you...?"

Wu Yuanyuan said helplessly, "I wanted to go out and show off, but I haven't had a chance yet!" Her family argued with her brother and sister-in-law until midnight last night, and she hadn't even had breakfast this morning. "It was my brother and sister-in-law plotting against me for my job, and Aunt Lan overheard them." Those two idiots!

Bu Ling nodded. "Oh, I see." After a while, she realized, "Wait a minute, if Aunt Lan overheard, how did the others in the compound know?"

Wu Yuanyuan watched Bu Ling's retreating figure. "Do you think there could be any secrets in this compound?"

Bling then fell silent; it was her ignorance that had led to this.

However, she thought that things couldn't continue like this. She needed to find an opportunity to clarify the matter, lest everyone come to her for help, and if she refused too many times, she would seem cold and unapproachable.

This is easy to resolve; we can make an example of her. Now, let's see who comes to her first.
