"Buling, don't lie to me. I asked Aunt Wu before I came." She was bluffing Buling. Of course, she wouldn't have asked. These things were best kept secret only by heaven, earth, you, and me. She wasn't doing this for Buling; she was doing it for her precious daughter's job.
"Aunt Shen, what are you saying? I would never lie to you. If you don't believe me, I'll call Aunt Wu over and let her tell you in person," Bu Ling said, looking aggrieved.
Granny Shen really didn't believe it. She said, "Come on, let's go to Old Wu's house together and ask." She'd expose the girl then and see how she'd explain herself.
Bling helped her open the door. Seeing the neighbor peeking in, she smiled but didn't say anything.
Meanwhile, Aunt Wu was also standing at the doorway, watching intently. Seeing the door open, she perked up; here it was, her turn to act.
Bu Ling walked to the door of Aunt Wu's house and asked, "Aunt Wu, do you think I just told you something about Sister Yuanyuan's job?"
Aunt Wu nodded: "Yes, it's all thanks to you, girl, for telling us that the state-run restaurant was looking for a kitchen helper, otherwise our Yuanyuan would have missed such a good opportunity."
Buling looked at Granny Shen, "Aunt Shen, I didn't lie to you, did I?"
Grandma Shen ignored Bu Ling and looked at Aunt Wu: "Sister Wu, we've been neighbors for many years, you can't lie to me."
Aunt Wu glanced at her sideways: "Why would I lie to you about something like this? Yuanyuan got into the state-run restaurant entirely on her own merit," she said proudly. Although Yuanyuan was the only one who passed the exam, she still got in, wasn't she? This old woman wasn't lying.
Granny Chen was still somewhat skeptical: "Just because of Yuanyuan? She can get into a state-run restaurant?"
Upon hearing this, Aunt Wu became displeased: "What's wrong with our Yuanyuan? She graduated from a proper high school, which is better than your Jianghua, who only graduated from junior high. What right do you have to look down on our Yuanyuan?" Aunt Wu said bluntly.
Granny Shen looked embarrassed: "Sister Wu, that's not what I meant."
Aunt Wu snorted and ignored her.
