Buling thought she would have to wait a few days for her first chicken, but to her surprise, as soon as she got home that evening, the first person to arrive was none other than Granny Shen, with whom she had a grudge.
Buling watched as Granny Shen walked into her house with three eggs, and feigned ignorance, asking, "Aunt Shen, is there something you need?"
Aunt Shen said kindly to Buling, "Buling, I'm here to apologize to you. I was wrong about what happened before. I've brought you three eggs so you can make up for it."
Buling accepted the eggs without any hesitation, saying, "Thank you, Aunt Shen. I was craving eggs anyway, so I forgive you."
Granny Chen looked at the eggs in Bu Ling's hand with a pained expression, but remembering what her daughter had said, she smiled and said, "That's good, that's good. Now I can rest assured."
Then, she sighed, "Buling, I didn't mean any harm. I just thought you had a job, and my son Jiang Hua is about to go to the countryside. I misunderstood and that's why I treated you that way." As she spoke, she looked up at Buling and saw her expression soften. She was secretly pleased.
Bu Ling chimed in, "That Jiang Hua is so pitiful. I heard life in the countryside is very hard."
Granny Shen clapped her hands, as if she had found a kindred spirit: "That's right, your sister Jiang Hua has been pampered by me since she was a child, how could she endure this hardship?"
Buling nodded in agreement: "Indeed, that's what my brother thinks too."
Granny Chen took Bu Ling's hand with a look of deep emotion: "Girl, you understand me best."
Bu Ling chimed in, "Aunt Shen, don't be sad, we'll always find a way."
Granny Shen was secretly delighted. She'd taken the bait! Just as her daughter had said, this girl was only responsive to gentle persuasion, not force.
She looked at Buling with a troubled expression: "Girl, I have a favor to ask of you. You must help me."
"Aunt Shen, please tell me, if I can help, I definitely will," Bu Ling said, implying that if she couldn't help, then there was nothing she could do.
Granny Shen said repeatedly, "If I can help, I definitely can."
She grabbed Buling's hand and said pleadingly, "Buling, your aunt wants to ask you to help your sister Jiang Hua find a job. Don't worry, we're not picky."
Bling sneered inwardly, "Still not choosing? Bah!"
She said with a troubled expression, "Aunt Shen, I don't have that ability. You really overestimate me." As she spoke, she tried to pull her hand away.
"Yes, yes, girl, don't be modest. Didn't you find a job for Yuanyuan from the Wu family? Your sister Jiang Hua doesn't expect her to be better than Yuanyuan, just someone like her will do. Maybe someone like you would be good too." Granny Chen held onto Buling's hand tightly, looking very easy to talk to.
Bling went along with her; let her grab it if she wanted, she'd just treat it like walking a dog.
“It’s not that difficult,” Bling said thoughtfully.
Granny Chen was secretly delighted, and her gratitude was even more evident on her face: "Girl, thank you so much. Your sister Jiang Hua will remember it. Don't worry, after this is done, I'll treat you to a meal, and I promise it won't be any worse than Granny Wu's."
"Aunt Shen, please don't be so polite. We're neighbors, it's only right that we help each other out," Bu Ling said with an innocent expression.
"Alright, alright, you're welcome, Auntie. I'll be waiting for your good news." Granny Chen beamed, thinking to herself that this girl was easy to fool; her daughter was indeed the smartest.
She released Bling's hand: "Then, Auntie, you can go back now." and walked towards the door.
Bu Ling called out to her, "Aunt Shen, wait!"
Granny Chen turned her head: "What's wrong? Is there anything else, Buling girl?"
"Aunt Shen, have you forgotten something?" Bu Ling reminded her.
Granny Chen thought for a moment; she hadn't forgotten anything. Then, seeing the eggs on the table, she smiled and said, "Buling, these eggs are for you. I won't take them back." Three eggs for a job—it was worth it.
"That's not right, Aunt Shen, you haven't given me the money yet," Bu Ling said kindly, seeing her confusion.
Granny Shen was even more confused: "Money? What money?"
"The money to buy a job for Sister Jiang Hua?" Bu Ling asked kindly.
"What? You want more money?" Granny Shen raised her voice, looking at Bu Ling in disbelief.
All the residents of the courtyard had been watching closely ever since Granny Chen entered Buling's room. Hearing her words, they all opened their doors, exchanged awkward yet knowing smiles at their neighbors who had also opened their doors.
Inside the room, Bling nodded matter-of-factly: "That's right, buying a job requires money, doesn't it?"
Granny Chen looked at Buling and softened her tone: "Buling, you found a job for Yuanyuan, you should also find one for our Jiang Hua. Don't be biased."
Bu Ling said innocently, "I didn't show any favoritism. Didn't I already promise to find a job for Sister Jiang Hua?"
"Then why did you ask the old lady for money?" Granny Chen asked.
Buling: "Yes, buying a job costs money." Looking at the expression on the fortune teller's face, she asked incredulously, "Aunt Shen, you're not planning to make me pay for it, are you?"
The fortune teller wanted to nod, as that was exactly what she thought, but she still retained some rationality. She looked at Buling with a grim expression and said, "Buling, don't try to fool me. Wu Yuanyuan didn't ask for money for her work, so how can you ask me for money?"
Bu Ling looked at her with a puzzled expression: "Aunt Shen, who told you that Sister Yuanyuan's job is free? I just told Sister Yuanyuan that someone in our state-run restaurant was transferring her job. She passed the exam herself. I was just passing on the message."
Granny Chen looked at Buling suspiciously.
Bu Ling looked sincere. She had already spoken with Wu Yuanyuan; she wasn't afraid even if Granny Shen went to ask Aunt Wu, and she believed they would help her finish the play.
