Chapter 40: First Menstruation

When they got off work in the evening, Bu Ling wasn't in a good mood, and Wu Yuanyuan didn't make a fuss either. She rode her bicycle with Bu Ling on the back, silently heading towards the courtyard house.

Upon arriving at the courtyard house, Buling pushed her bicycle inside and closed the door, completely losing her appetite for gossip.

Wu Yuanyuan was very worried about her and checked on her several times, but Bu Ling's room door remained closed. She didn't dare disturb Bu Ling. She had heard from Grandpa Tan that Bu Ling was depressed, but she didn't know how to comfort her.

Bling lay in the room, feeling suffocated. She didn't want to cook; she just wanted to lie there, without turning on the light, staring blankly at the ceiling, her heart filled with mixed emotions.

I'm especially worried about Bu Yi and Liang Boda, afraid they might encounter danger.

She fell asleep without realizing it. In her dream, Buling frowned restlessly. She seemed to dream that the two of them were being pushed around in white cloth, and someone told her to accept their condolences.

Upon hearing this, she abruptly opened her eyes, staring at the dark ceiling. After a moment, she realized it was a dream. She stirred, feeling a dull ache in her lower abdomen, along with a familiar, surging sensation.

Bu Ling finally realized that she had started her period. It was the first time this body had ever had one, and the pain was excruciating. She frowned, sat up, turned on the light, and looked at the dark stain on the blue sheets. She sighed; it was truly a case of misfortunes never coming singly. She didn't even have a sanitary napkin.

This body had never had her period before, so she hadn't prepared any menstrual pads; the sanitary napkins in her spatial storage had already been used up in her previous life.

Despite the sharp pain in her lower abdomen, she went out and headed straight for Wu Yuanyuan's room. The situation was urgent; she could only ask Wu Yuanyuan if she had anything to do, hoping she hadn't used any.

"Bang--Bang bang--Bang bang bang--Bang bang bang bang"

The banging on the door was very loud in the quiet night.

"Sister Yuanyuan, Sister Yuanyuan, Wu Yuanyuan!" At this point, Buling no longer cared about disturbing the neighbors.

"Coming, coming," Wu Yuanyuan's sleepy voice rang out in the room.

Bu Ling stopped knocking on the door

A moment later, Wu Yuanyuan opened the door, looked at Bu Ling standing outside, and asked anxiously, "What's wrong?"

Bu Ling whispered, "Sister Yuanyuan, do you have menstrual pads?"

Wu Yuanyuan was speechless. She had thought that the banging on the door in the middle of the night meant something serious had happened.

Seeing that Wu Yuanyuan remained silent, Buling gritted her teeth and said, "Used ones are fine too." At this point, she couldn't afford to be picky.

Wu Yuanyuan snapped out of her daze: "I just made three new ones, haven't used them yet, you can use them first." With that, she went back into the house and returned shortly after, holding three menstrual belts, which she handed to Buling.

Buling took the flashlight and quickly walked out of the courtyard. That's the downside of single-story houses; the toilet is built outside the courtyard, so you have to walk a long way to use it. Every household in the courtyard has a chamber pot, but the smell is too strong in the summer, so Buling had never prepared one.

Watching Bu Ling's frail figure leave the courtyard alone, Wu Yuanyuan felt a little worried. She went back inside to get a coat and followed Bu Ling.

Hearing footsteps behind her, Bu Ling turned around and saw Wu Yuanyuan. "Why are you here?"

Wu Yuanyuan said, "I need to go to the toilet."

Seeing her like that, Bu Ling felt a warmth in her heart, knowing that she was worried about her. She didn't call the girl out on her stubbornness, nodded, and continued walking towards the restroom.

Their courtyard house was located to the south and north of the toilet, which was fine in the summer but particularly inconvenient in the winter.

The two walked for about five minutes before reaching the restroom. Buling, holding a flashlight, went inside. Knowing Buling wasn't comfortable using the restroom with others, Wu Yuanyuan waited outside.

After changing her menstrual belt, Bu Ling watched Wu Yuanyuan's retreating figure and smiled knowingly: "Let's go."

Wu Yuanyuan didn't say anything, took the flashlight, and pulled Buling back to the courtyard. She went straight to Buling's room.

After entering the house, he looked around and asked, "Where did you put your brown sugar?"

Buling didn't try to hide it from her and took a bag of brown sugar from the cupboard. It had originally been a whole bag, but after nearly a month of consumption, only about half remained. However, all that brown sugar water she'd been drinking for a month hadn't been for nothing; she was seeing results!

Seeing that there was hot water in Buling's thermos, Wu Yuanyuan made her a cup of brown sugar water, saying, "Drinking this will make you feel much better."

Buling obediently held the brown sugar water and drank it in small sips.

After Bu Ling finished drinking, Wu Yuanyuan said, "It's getting late, I'll head back now."

Buling looked up and smiled sweetly at her: "Thank you, Sister Yuanyuan."

Wu Yuanyuan waved her hand without turning her head: "It's nothing!"

Before closing the door, he reminded Bling to lock it.

The next day, Bu Ling got out of bed looking miserable. She first changed the menstrual belt from the night before, washed it, and hung it to dry in the room before going out to wash up, hastily eat breakfast, and then went to work with Wu Yuanyuan.

On the way, Wu Yuanyuan asked worriedly, "Should I ask you for leave? You can go home and rest today." Bu Ling's face was very pale.

Bu Ling leaned against Wu Yuanyuan's back: "No need, I just didn't rest well. I'll be fine after a good rest tonight." She didn't want to go back at all; being alone would only lead to overthinking. It was better to go to work; when she was busy, she wouldn't have time to think so much.

Wu Yuanyuan didn't press her, only saying, "If you're really uncomfortable, you must say so." Being a girl herself, she understood Buling's pain.

Bling rested his head against her back and nodded silently.

Upon arriving at the state-run restaurant, Wu Yuanyuan escorted Buling behind the counter, poured her a cup of hot water, and then went to the kitchen.

Bling held the hot water and drank it in small sips.

On the other side, Sangshen felt irritable thinking about the little black girl's disappointed look yesterday. She tossed and turned all night and didn't sleep well. In the morning, she ate breakfast with huge dark circles under her eyes, completely ignoring her brother's hesitant words.
