Chapter 58 Extravagant Purchase of Meat

"What excellent knife skills, sir!"

The middle-aged man smiled like a Maitreya Buddha, accepting the young girl's praise without any modesty. He wasn't bragging; after so many years in this line of work, Old Zhu certainly had some skill.

Bling took the meat, noticed the bones beside it, and her mind raced.

"Uncle, are you selling these bones?"

"You little rascal, you know your stuff. I like you, so I'll sell you two bones. Including the meat, it'll be fifty yuan in total." These bones normally cost fifty cents each, and the meat is eighty cents a pound, so this is quite a bargain.

Bling acknowledged the favor: "Thank you, Uncle!"

You need to be sweet-talking to get ahead.

The uncle helped Buling tie the meat into pieces with straw rope, strung them together, and hung them on the handlebars of the cart.

Bling thanked him, got on his bike, and rode towards the department store.

Walking along the road, pieces of meat would disappear every now and then, until the bicycle stopped in front of the department store. The handlebars were empty, with only greasy marks, proving that something had just been on them.

Locking up his bicycle and calculating his ticket, Bling went straight up to the second floor.

I bought two tea mugs and a lock at the household goods counter, then went downstairs to the pastry counter and bought peach shortbread, steamed rice cakes, rice cakes, and other pastries. I bought as many as I could since I didn't need coupons.

I then went to the candy counter opposite the pastry counter and bought fruit candies, White Rabbit milk candies, and lard candies, among others. White Rabbit milk candies were the most expensive, costing one yuan and five yuan per pound and requiring a ration coupon.

Buling bought ten pounds of it, keeping some for herself to eat slowly, while the rest of the fruit candies and other treats were for giving as gifts.

She's rich now, so she can eat the best she can afford.

She also wanted to buy malted milk powder, but she didn't have any coupons. Apparently, it could be redeemed. She was also tired of brown sugar water; it was time for a change.

When I get back, I'll ask Manager Zhu and the others if they have any tickets. She used... uh, to exchange them for money.

She'd used up all her coupons today, leaving only food coupons. Perhaps exchanging them for food coupons now wouldn't be a bad option; she wasn't short of food, but others certainly were.

Under the sales clerk's disapproving gaze, Buling happily left the department store.

I was thinking of going to a secondhand store to see if they had any jars or similar items, but then I realized she'd already been away long enough, and any longer wouldn't be appropriate, so I had to give up on that idea.

On the way back to the state-run restaurant, things disappeared again. Luckily, there weren't many people at noon, or it would have been terrifying.

In the end, only one pound of lard sugar was left on the surface.

Pushing her bicycle into the restaurant, she raised an eyebrow at the scene inside. What had happened?
