Seeing that the little black girl had closed the window, Mulberry, on the other side, stopped dawdling, quickly finished the remaining dumplings, and rode her bicycle straight to the county government building.
The county government building has only four floors. Everyone working there, from the county head down to low-level staff like Sangshen, is a government employee.
It's incredibly prestigious to tell people about that.
Thanks to his brother, Sang Shen got a lowly clerk job in the government building. His daily work consisted of slacking off and sleeping, and being late or leaving early was commonplace. Everyone was used to it.
They really couldn't afford to offend Sang Zi and his brother.
Sang Zi was the head of the county's Revolutionary Committee. Although he had been honest and law-abiding since taking office and had never persecuted anyone, the Revolutionary Committee's reputation was too powerful to ignore.
This resulted in no one daring to mess with Sangzi, no matter how honest he was.
Oh, and that includes his brother who's always slacking off; nobody dares to say anything.
Most importantly, although Sang Zi doesn't cause trouble, he's not easy to bully either. Just look at how he manages to keep that group of people in the Revolutionary Committee completely under his control; you can tell he's a capable person.
They don't cause trouble because they're low-key, not because they lack the ability to. That's why the people in the government building try to avoid offending these two brothers if possible.
Mulberry was already used to it, and even enjoyed it. He parked his bicycle and went straight to the rightmost office on the third floor.
"Knock--Knock--"
"Come in!"
Sangshen pushed open the door and entered. Behind the desk sat a young man in a white shirt. The young man smiled gently when he saw her.
"Xiao Zhen, you went to a state-run restaurant again?"
Sangshen glanced at her brother and said with a toothache, "Brother, can you stop pretending?"
His brother is so weird and creepy.
The young man wasn't annoyed, and smiled slightly: "Don't you think my brother looks very approachable?"
I don't think so!
His brother clearly doesn't need glasses, but he insists on wearing them every day to pretend to be a refined gentleman. Countless people have been fooled by his innocent appearance.
"Brother, I want to move out!" Sangshen said bluntly.
"Moving out? What happened? Are you unhappy living here?" Sangzi asked. "Did someone bully you?" As she said this, a fierce glint flashed behind her glasses.
"Brother, are you kidding me? Do I look like someone who can be bullied so easily?"
"I just feel that I'm old enough now, it's time for me to leave my brother and live independently," Sangzhen explained.
Upon hearing his words, Sang Zi took off her glasses and casually tossed them onto the desk, revealing phoenix eyes identical to Sang Shen's. Those phoenix eyes then looked at her younger brother, who was behaving irresponsibly, with a half-smile.
"Okay, I just find living in the government compound incredibly boring. Everyone there is so rigid." Living with people like that every day makes him feel like he's aged a lot.
“What do you mean by rigid? That’s composure,” Sangzi corrected her younger brother.
Can someone who isn't steady and reliable succeed in government work?
Sangshen didn't argue with his brother.
"Being steady is fine, I just want to move to a different place and have some fun."
Sangzi looked at her younger brother, who was openly saying he was looking for fun, rubbed her temples, and warned, "You can't talk about this outside."
Sangshen remained noncommittal; he wasn't stupid.
"Okay, whatever makes you happy. Where do you want to stay? I'll figure something out for you!" Sang Zi said helplessly.
His younger brother was spoiled rotten by the family; he was always doing whatever he pleased.
Mulberry chuckled.
“Brother, I want to move to Yangliu Hutong, the compound where the incident happened yesterday. I heard that the compound is very lively.”
The girl hasn't confessed her feelings to him yet, so he can't tell anyone beforehand. What if she's shy and doesn't confess?
Sangzi frowned slightly as she thought of the group of people their Revolutionary Committee had brought back yesterday.
"Does it have to be that compound? That compound is a mess, and there aren't any spare rooms." What if those people lead his younger brother astray?
Sangshen went there because the compound was particularly chaotic; he needed to protect the little black girl, otherwise, with her silly, innocent look, she'd be sold off and still have to count the money for the seller.
"Brother, can you help me think of a solution? I think that compound is really great, especially suitable for someone like me who has nothing to do all day."
Most importantly, the person he liked was in that compound.
Sang Zi sighed; he had never been able to refuse his younger brother's requests since he was a child.
"Well then, I can't just ask them to move out. Let me see if anyone has a spare room and I'll help you rent one."
It's a bit pricey, but as long as his brother is happy.
"Thank you, brother!"
It would be stupid not to use a brother you have.
Looking at Sang Shen's smiling face, Sang Zi's gaze softened.
The two brothers shared a deep bond here.
However, after sitting for a short while, the mulberry became impatient.
"Brother, I'm leaving now. I still need to go check on that bookworm this afternoon. With his personality, he's probably getting bullied."
"Go ahead, I'm busy. Could you look after Chen Ci for me?"
"What are you saying? This is not what I should be doing."
"Alright, alright, our mulberry is the most loyal."
"Brother, you're so cheesy!"
After saying that, without waiting for his brother's reaction, Sangshen dashed out of the office.
With his wish fulfilled, he walked out with light steps.
After leaving the government building, I hopped on my bicycle and headed towards the secondhand store.
Meanwhile, Bu Ling, who was still working as a bricklayer in a state-run restaurant, finally witnessed just how outrageous the rumors of this era could be.
Almost all the guests who came for dinner that evening were discussing things related to Yangliu Hutong.
Moreover, everyone's version was different, each one more exaggerated than the last, making it difficult for Bling to hold back her laughter.
