Chapter 70 Wu Yuanyuan's Resolute Spirit

That evening, Wu Yuanyuan returned home to find her parents with stern faces.

Of course she knew why.

"Mom and Dad, I'm home!" Wu Yuanyuan greeted them as usual.

Seeing Wu Yuanyuan like this, Aunt Wu couldn't contain her anger.

"Stop! Don't you have anything to say to us?" Grandpa Wu said in a deep voice.

Wu Yuanyuan's expression remained unchanged: "Mom and Dad, Uncle Tie and Aunt Zhao came by today, right? I'm dating someone, Tie He from the backyard."

She had anticipated her parents' reaction, so she wasn't flustered at all.

"You silly girl, such a big thing happened and you didn't tell the family at all! If the Tie family hadn't come today, we would still be completely in the dark!" Aunt Wu scolded.

"Mom, what am I supposed to say? Do I want you to marry me off quickly so you can make room for my sister-in-law?" Wu Yuanyuan said sarcastically.

"What...what do you mean by this?"

"It's exactly what you're thinking. I'm not giving up my job," Wu Yuanyuan said calmly.

"This is our Wu family's work. How could you be so selfish? Is this how I've taught you to be?" Aunt Wu questioned.

"Mom, you've always told me that there are only two children in our family, my brother and me. What my brother has, I have too. Why is it different this time? Just because my brother and sister-in-law are arguing, they want to give my things to my sister-in-law, just because I'm a girl?"

Wu Yuanyuan had kept these words to herself for a long time. Every time her mother hesitated to speak, she wanted to ask, "Didn't you say you'd treat us the same? Why are you different now?"

If that's the case, then it's better not to give her any hope.

Thinking of this, Wu Yuanyuan gave a mocking smile, walked to the table and sat down, asking her father who was smoking a pipe on the kang (a heated brick bed), "Dad, is that what you mean too?"

Grandpa Wu remained silent for a long time before saying, "No married woman brings her job with her herb." This was tantamount to him indirectly stating his meaning.

"What if I insist?"

At this moment, Aunt Wu threw herself onto Wu Yuanyuan, crying and pleading, "Yuanyuan, I beg you, I'm begging you, if we don't have this job, your brother's family will fall apart!"

Wu Yuanyuan let her mother shake her, her expression remaining unchanged.

"Mom, what if I insist on not letting you work?"

"This is Wu family business; we can't let you take it to the Tie family," said Grandpa Wu.

“Dad, what can you do to me? If I don’t agree, you can’t get this job no matter how much trouble you cause.”

Aunt Wu's face changed drastically

"How can you be so selfish, you brat? Did we raise you just so you could threaten us?"

"Mom, say whatever you want. If this job were something my brother desperately needed, I would give it to him without hesitation. But now, it's impossible!" Wu Yuanyuan was heartbroken.

She was loved by her parents and protected by her brother growing up, and had deep feelings for her family. But everything changed when her brother got married.

Mom and Dad said Xiao Qiu is the youngest, so she should give in to her.

The older brother said his sister-in-law had a hard life, and she should be considerate of her.

Now even her livelihood is being taken away by her sister-in-law. She may be naive, but she's not a pushover.

“That’s your sister-in-law, your brother’s wife, your nephew’s mother, she’s not an outsider.” In Aunt Wu’s heart, she might not necessarily consider her daughter-in-law as family, but her son and grandson are the most important to her, so she can compromise for their sake.

"So I'm an outsider?" Wu Yuanyuan shouted.

"Do they abandon their daughter for them? Do they think it's okay for them to keep pressuring me like this?" Tears welled up in Wu Yuanyuan's eyes; she was overwhelmed with grievance.

“Yuanyuan, Dad knows this has wronged you. Don’t worry, when you get married, your parents will definitely prepare a full dowry for you and make sure the Tie family will not look down on you.”

"Yes, Yuanyuan, you married nearby. If you're unhappy about anything, come and tell Mom anytime. Mom will stand up for you."

Wu Yuanyuan stared blankly at her parents who had once doted on her: "Mom and Dad, what if I told you that if I gave you this job, you would pretend you didn't have a daughter like me?"

She just wanted to see whether the job was more important or she was more important.

Aunt Wu's face changed drastically.

"You brat, what are you saying? Just for a job, you're going to disown your parents? What have we ever done to wrong you since you were little? All we want is for you to have a job, and you won't even give it to us!" Aunt Wu yelled.

Seeing her parents like this, Wu Yuanyuan simply stopped trying.

"Mom, I'm tired. I don't want to argue with you anymore, and I don't want to be laughed at by the people in the compound. Either I give you the job and I will never see my brother's family again, or I take the job with me. I don't want any dowry, bride price, or betrothal money. I'll just take this job with me."

After saying that, she stood up and walked out. When she reached the door, she turned back and looked at her furious parents: "Mom and Dad, I just want to see where you put me, your daughter? It seems you've put me last."

After saying that, she pushed open the door and went out. Looking at the busy neighbors in the yard, she wiped away her tears and returned to her room expressionlessly.

Her room was right next to the south-facing room, divided in two. One half was used as a storage room, and the other half as her room. Although it was much smaller than her brother's, she was still content. At least, her parents cared about her.

When did things start to change? Was it when my brother got married? Or when my nephew was born?

It doesn't matter anymore; things have changed.

She lay on the bed, covered herself with the blanket, and wailed loudly.

She just wanted to prove a point. It was clearly agreed that the job was hers, but her sister-in-law's outburst made her parents give in completely.
