Chapter 98 Cotton

Early in the morning, Aunt Lan and Sister-in-law Zhou started arguing.

"Xiao Zhou, you're still young, you'll have plenty of opportunities in the future. This time, let's give it to the older lady, okay?"

"Oh dear, Aunt Lan, you have quite the nerve! You just open your mouth and expect me to give up my house? Why should I? Because you're short-lived!" Aunt Zhou's sarcastic expression was absolutely perfect.

"Pfft!"

Seeing that the two of them were looking at her, Buling quickly spat out the toothpaste foam in her mouth, "You guys continue, I just choked a little."

Aunt Zhou's eye twitched. This girl, she lies without even thinking.

Distracted like this, Aunt Lan forgot her earlier anger and could only glare angrily at Sister-in-law Zhou.

Sister-in-law Zhou was not to be outdone.

Seeing that their argument was about to start again, Buling brushed her teeth faster. She had to go to work soon and didn't have time to settle their dispute.

Besides, it was just a few words exchanged; she'd seen plenty of things like this in the past few days, it was just that Sister-in-law Zhou and Aunt Lan were right in front of her.

After washing up and having breakfast, I met up with Wu Yuanyuan for work. Before leaving, I glanced at the large lock on Sangzhen's door and sighed. Since returning from Hanjiacun that night, Sangzhen had stayed in the courtyard house for one night and left before dawn the next day. She hadn't returned since, and I wondered what she was busy with.

The state-run restaurant was packed to capacity again today, selling out of food early on. Buling pulled out her half-finished knitting sweater, sat down by the stove, and began knitting diligently.

This was knitted for her brother; she'd been working on it for over ten days and was only halfway done. She was hoping to give it to Buyi as a New Year's gift, but it seems unlikely now.

There was no way around it; her knitting skills were truly appalling. She had knitted herself a scarf with such large holes that it let in the wind. She couldn't possibly knit a sweater for Buyi like that.

Now that the weather's cold, Grandpa Tan and the others have stopped going out to the front and are instead sitting around the stove warming themselves by the fire. Wouldn't it be nice to roast a sweet potato while they do that?

Of course, I brought the sweet potatoes myself, so I can't take advantage of public resources.

To be honest, working in a state-run restaurant is really great. The pay is high, the work is easy, and the benefits are good. There's also no backstabbing or infighting, and everyone gets along very well.

After a leisurely day, after work, Bu Ling and Wu Yuanyuan went to the supply and marketing cooperative and bought some clam oil. The weather is dry now, and their skin is incredibly dry; clam oil would help. As for their faces, they would use face cream, of course.

She's young now, with a face full of collagen, so she doesn't need complicated skincare products; just moisturizing is enough.

In the six months since she transmigrated, she has been well-fed and clothed, and has been taking care of her health. She is now vastly different from the thin, dark-skinned girl she was when she first arrived.

Now she's wearing a warm cotton coat, her face is fuller and not as dark, she looks like she's living a good life. If someone who knew the original owner before saw her on the street now, they probably wouldn't recognize her.

Bling was satisfied with this.

"Bring, come quick, there's cotton!"

The moment the staff placed the cotton on the counter, it was spotted by the sharp-eyed Wu Yuanyuan.

Her shout attracted everyone who was shopping at the supply and marketing cooperative. Seeing that it was real, they immediately swarmed forward.

"Everyone, don't push! Listen to me, cotton is rationed, five jin per person, and you need a ticket!"

"Give me five jin!"

"Whoever has coupons, I'll trade them with my grain coupons!"

Buling glanced at the crowded throng with awe, wanting to move away, but Wu Yuanyuan, as if on steroids, dragged her along, howling as she pushed her way in.

Bling: ......

Wu Yuanyuan must have been flipping a ladle too much; her strength was not to be underestimated. She dragged Bu Ling, pushing and shoving left and right, carving a bloody path for her, and even dragging the little good-for-nothing Bu Ling along with her.

"How many kilograms do you want?" the sales clerk asked emotionlessly.

"Five jin!" Bu Ling reached into her satchel and took out cotton coupons from her storage space.

These cotton coupons were saved up by Niu Fangcao before, and they're coming in handy now.

While the sales clerk was getting cotton, Wu Yuanyuan whispered, "Do you have any more? I'll return them to you when I get back!"

Buling nodded slightly, then took out the remaining three catties of cotton coupons from his pocket: "That's all I have left."

"That's enough!" Wu Yuanyuan took it; she still had two jin of cotton coupons left, which was just enough to buy five jin.

After buying the cotton, the two squeezed out of the crowd and stood outside the supply and marketing cooperative's gate. Buling let out a long sigh of relief.

She really is still a complete novice.

"Are you sure you really need to go this far?" Wu Yuanyuan said, amused.

Bu Ling rolled her eyes at her. Of course, she wouldn't be that tall. Wu Yuanyuan was a typical northerner, about 1.65 meters tall, unlike her, who was only 1.55 meters tall.

In that situation, if she hadn't been careful, she might have been stepped on by the older women.

"Let's go back!" She didn't really want to talk about her inner thoughts.

"Okay!" Wu Yuanyuan got on her bicycle and took Buling home.

"I'll return the cotton coupons to you when we get back," Wu Yuanyuan said.

“Okay!” Bling didn’t refuse; even brothers should keep clear accounts.

In the north, cotton is in short supply, and most of the time even with ration coupons, it's impossible to buy. They certainly couldn't let this opportunity slip by.

Especially in winter, the price of cotton on the black market skyrockets to an alarming level, sometimes reaching one yuan per kilogram, and even then, many people still can't buy it.

The supply and marketing cooperative's cotton is cheaper; it's only two cents a pound as long as you have a ration coupon. But cotton isn't always available, so they were lucky this time.

Along the way, Wu Yuanyuan pedaled her bicycle very fast. After returning home, she first gave the cotton to Aunt Wu, then talked about the cotton supply from the supply and marketing cooperative, and finally said, "Mom, I borrowed three jin of cotton coupons from Buling. Give me three cotton coupons and I'll return them to him."

When Aunt Wu saw the cotton, she was overjoyed. Upon hearing Wu Yuanyuan's words, she immediately said, "Of course, of course. I also have some walnuts here. I see that Xiaobu likes to eat them, so you can take some to her too."
