Chapter 269 The Mulberry Boat Capsizes

Three days after Grandpa Tan returned, Grandma Tan Xiaoqian's sentence came down: she would be sent to a local farm for three years of labor reform.

It's a very light punishment, but there's nothing we can do. Given the relationship between the Tan and Han families, this result is already the consequence of the efforts made by the Tan brothers.

The laws of this era were not very perfect, and human relationships were highly valued, so absolute fairness was simply impossible in some matters.

For example, Tan Xiao's former mother-in-law was originally convicted of causing serious injury, but because of Tan Xiao, she was only convicted of theft.

Theft of property normally doesn't carry a three-year sentence, but the Tan family pulled strings behind the scenes, which is why they were sentenced to three years.

Later, when Tan Xiao learned of this outcome, she went to the Tan family to make a scene, but was driven out by the two Tan brothers. This time, even Tan's mother did not soften her heart. From then on, the Tan family completely gave up on Tan Xiao as their daughter.

Since Grandpa Tan can't stand up, he naturally can't cook, and neither of his two sons are good at cooking, so the restaurant's head chef has to be replaced.

However, Manager Zhu and the people from the supply bureau were not heartless people. Considering that Grandpa Tan had a son who was working in the countryside, they specially arranged for Grandpa Tan to take over a job that was suitable for his son. Once his son completed the formalities, he could take over the job.

This job is different from the previous kitchen helper job at the restaurant. This is a formal job, the kind that allows you to transfer your household registration and receive food coupons. With this formal job, Grandpa Tan's second son can bring his wife back to the city without adding any burden to his older brother.

It could be considered a win-win situation in another sense, but the price was Mr. Tan's legs.

Later, Bu Ling and the others visited Grandpa Tan again. Despite such a huge change, Grandpa Tan was still the same as before, always smiling and cheerful. Even though he was half-paralyzed in bed, he didn't complain about his fate.

Even when Bu Ling and the other three went to visit him, he didn't forget to teach Wu Yuanyuan and Zhu Zhizhi the essence of cooking. Although he didn't teach them everything he knew, he was very open and honest, which made Zhu Zhizhi and Wu Yuanyuan extremely grateful.

With the matter of Grandpa Tan settled, the restaurant got a new head chef, which didn't cause much of a stir. Gradually, even the four members of the Buling family got used to Chef Lü's presence.

Master Lü probably knows he has a blemish on his face, so he won't come to the front unless absolutely necessary. He spends most of his day holed up in the kitchen.

He was either cooking, making repairs, or cleaning. In just one week, the entire kitchen was completely transformed.

Even Wu Yuanyuan complained in private that with Master Lü around, she felt useless as a helper. However, despite saying that, it didn't stop her from developing a strong liking for Master Lü.

Chef Lü integrated himself perfectly into the restaurant, and with his culinary skills, the restaurant's operations were on track.

Buling's work is going smoothly, but her family life is not so smooth.

Here's what happened: One evening, Bu Ling and Fang Sao were walking home hand in hand when they ran into Xie Dong, who was about to leave.

Xie Dong greeted the two warmly, "Sister-in-law Fang, sister-in-law, you're here early today!"

"Yes, I came back as soon as everything was settled at the restaurant," Bu Ling replied with a smile.

Xie Dong was clearly not in a hurry, and even had the leisure to chat with the two of them: "Sister-in-law, I heard that your restaurant has a new head chef with exceptional skills?"

Bu Ling nodded: "Indeed, we have a new chef, and his skills are quite good. Brother Xie, how about we come to the restaurant sometime and try our head chef's cooking?"

Xie Dong was clearly tempted upon hearing this, but he quickly sighed regretfully, "Then I won't be able to enjoy this for a while."

"What's wrong?" Bling looked at him curiously.

"I'm going on a trip to the south soon. Is there anything you'd like me to bring back for you, sister-in-law?" Xie Dong waved his hand generously, "Just have Xiao Qi cook a few more meals for me, sister-in-law."

Upon hearing this, Bu Ling was quite surprised and blurted out, "Brother Xie is going to drive?"

Xie Dong nodded: "Yes, this time we're going a bit further, and I estimate it will be more than a month before we're back." He didn't notice at all that Bu Ling's gaze was off.

“But don’t you need to rest for half a year after each trip?” Bu Ling blurted out.

Xie Dong looked at Bu Ling with a face full of questions: "How is this possible? Even if I had this habit, our captain wouldn't agree to it!"

Then he watched as Bling's smiling face fell, and he asked cautiously, "Sister-in-law, what's wrong?"

Suppressing her anger, Bu Ling gave a gentle smile: "It's nothing, I just suddenly thought of something."

Before Xie Dong could ask further, she changed the subject, saying, "By the way, Brother Xie, didn't you bring back a lot of seafood at the end of last year? Could you please bring back some more seafood for me this time?"

After saying that, she quickly added, "Especially shrimp."

Xie Dong's attention was diverted, and he forgot to ask what had happened to Bu Ling. When he heard Bu Ling's request, he readily said, "No problem. There's no shortage of seafood in the South. I'll bring back more this time."

"And shrimp, what kind of shrimp would you like to eat, sister-in-law? Would the kind I brought back last time be okay?"

Bling tried to keep smiling: "Sure, I'm not picky."

"Alright, since my sister-in-law likes it, I'll bring back more!" Xie Dong said generously.

"Thank you!" Bling said politely.

Xie Dong waved his hand and turned to look at Aunt Fang: "Aunt Fang, have you finished making the meat sauce I asked you to make before?"

Aunt Fang nodded: "Okay, okay, I'll go get it for you now."
