The carpenter's house was an adobe house with three main rooms, two east wing rooms, and a large courtyard filled with all sorts of pieces of wood of different sizes.
"Hello, comrade, what do you need?" the old man sitting in the courtyard asked.
Buyi readily agreed: "I want a bed, a wardrobe, a table, and four stools."
Following behind Bu Yi, Bu Ling secretly observed Uncle Han. She remembered that in that book, the male protagonist learned carpentry from Uncle Han and made money by selling furniture in the early stages of his business. Later, he opened a furniture store.
Uncle Han has white hair and a peaceful look in his eyes. He doesn't have the lethargy that old people usually have; he's a very energetic old man.
“These things aren’t difficult to find. I have some ready-made here. See if you like any of them. If you do, just take them home,” Uncle Han said.
Bu Yi asked Bu Ling with his eyes.
"Shall we go take a look?" Bling said.
Uncle Han glanced at the two young men and said, "Come with me."
He led them toward the west wing.
Following behind, Bu Ling and the other person went inside and discovered that what looked like two rooms from the outside was actually one large room filled with ready-made furniture.
The room has everything you need: a bed, wardrobe, table, dressing table, and stools—all very practical.
"Look around as you like," Uncle Han said.
Without any hesitation, Buling walked around the room and found that the furniture was all pretty much the same, not too fancy, but very smooth.
She took a fancy to a solid wood bed, walked over, sat down, and patted it. The bed looked sturdy.
Then there's the wardrobe, which has double doors and an upper shelf for bedding. It has a wood grain texture and a very fresh and clean feel.
She picked out a square table that could be used as a dining table or a dressing table, and finally took four stools.
After making her selections, she told Uncle Han what she had chosen.
Uncle Han's smile deepened; this was a big client.
Bu Yi didn't delay, "Uncle Han, how much are these in total?"
Uncle Han counted on his fingers: "The bed is fifteen, the wardrobe is ten, the table is five, the stools are one each, and I'll also give you a small box and a lock to keep your valuables."
Bling raised an eyebrow. "Is the old man good at business?"
Buyi nodded, indicating his agreement to the price.
The old man immediately laughed heartily and led the two towards the brigade leader's house.
Bling understood the market and obediently followed suit without saying a word.
When they arrived at the brigade leader's house, the old man explained their purpose, and the brigade leader readily agreed, immediately writing them a note. Bu Yi took the note and handed over the money: "Brigade leader, Uncle Han, we'll come back later to collect it."
Neither of them had any objections.
After buying the furniture and setting a time for delivery, the two left the village.
She was quite disappointed that she didn't meet the female lead this time, as she wanted to see what the female lead looked like in reality. However, the female lead probably hasn't traveled over yet.
Bu Yi drove the car into the military compound and stopped. "Lingling, I'm going to borrow a truck to bring the furniture back. We'll deliver it directly to the courtyard house. Do you want to come along?"
Buling nodded without hesitation: "Yes, I still need to buy a lock. Brother, wait for me a moment, I'm going to my room to get some money coupons. Some of them are about to expire, I need to use them quickly."
She can't keep letting Buyi spend money; what if he goes broke from spending it all?
Bu Ling quickly came out carrying her small bundle and handed it to Bu Yi: "Brother, you take it, I'm afraid I'll lose it."
Bu Yi chuckled and patted her head: "Okay, brother will hold it for you."
He took Buling to the army's logistics department, borrowed a military truck, promised to fill it with gas, and successfully drove the truck out of the army base.
Upon arriving at the village, the brigade leader and Uncle Han were already waiting. They found a few young men to help load the furniture onto the vehicle. Bu Yi gave the village chief a pack of cigarettes and led Bu Ling straight to the courtyard house.
They'd been going back and forth like this all afternoon, and it was almost dark. It was the workers' time to get off work, and the courtyard was bustling with activity.
Seeing a military truck parked at the gate, the old man from the management office went out and asked, "Comrades, what's going on here?"
Bu Ling poked his head out: "Grandpa, I rented Aunt Tian's house this morning, and I've come to deliver some furniture."
Upon hearing this, the old man in charge of the building understood. That morning, two old women from his building had caused a scene, making him lose face.
He looked at the man in military uniform who got out of the driver's seat on the other side, and said, "Sir, could you please call a few strong young men to help us out?"
When offered a cigarette, the old man from the management office quickly put it away, saying, "Sure, why not?"
He turned to the young men in the courtyard and said, "Da Bao, Wu Gang, Tie He, and Qian Xingyan, you four lads, come and help the new couple in the courtyard carry some furniture."
"Here comes Grandpa Wu (Dad)!"
The four young men smiled at the man and woman standing outside. Qian An, the most quick-witted, said, "Soldier, just let me know if you need anything!"
Bu Yi smiled and said, "Thank you for your trouble." He then handed each of them a handful of candy.
The four young men laughed even more heartily. Together with Bu Yi, the five of them carried the items in two trips before finally getting them into the house and placing them in the designated spot according to Bu Ling's instructions.
The residents of the courtyard house were all speechless at the generosity of the brother and sister who were renting the house. The furniture was obviously new, and they were really willing to spend money.
After putting away the furniture, Bu Ling locked the door. Facing the varying gazes of the courtyard residents, she smiled but didn't say anything. "Brother, let's go."
Bu Yi greeted the old man in charge of the courtyard, walked out of the courtyard, started the car, and drove away.
"That little girl, her brother is so good to her," a young girl said enviously, then glanced at her brother who was grinning foolishly with a candy in his mouth: "Give me half."
