Chapter 33: Wedding

Piles of firewood were stacked in the corners of the walls, supported by wooden boards and leaving gaps to prevent them from getting wet by water on the ground when it rains.

There were a lot of dried peanuts in front of Mingming and Goudan. These were grown by Aunt Zhu in her own yard. The two children were sitting on small stools peeling peanuts.

Wang Shuning went to the kitchen to wash the chestnuts, leaving a small part for making chestnut roast chicken, and drying the rest for making sugar-fried chestnuts.

She looked at the fruitful scene in the space. The wooden house was already filled with various things.

Wang Shuning frowned. For the first time, he felt that it was not a good thing for plants to grow too fast. He could not harvest them all. If he wanted to sell all the harvested plants in the wooden house, he had to go to the county again.

When the team that went to the town to pay grain taxes came back at noon, the villagers of Dafeng Village seemed to be relieved.

He Haiming looked at the piled-up warehouse of the village committee, his face tired but also with a hint of joy. He turned to He Huiliang and He Mingliang and said, "It's up to you two to calculate the numbers and distribute the grain as soon as possible."

He Huiliang nodded, "Got it, Village Chief. Mingliang and I have been working overtime these two days. According to the speed of previous years, we will be able to distribute food the day after tomorrow."

He Haiming left quickly with his hands behind his back. He Huiliang was the village accountant, and He Mingliang was the village scorekeeper. Before each grain distribution, these two were the busiest. After everything was calculated, the village chief and the three production team leaders would come to check again. Only when there was no problem could the grain be distributed.

The wedding banquet hosted by He Daoniu's family was a lively one. Wang Shuning was not a relative of either the groom or the bride, so naturally she was not invited.

But the villagers didn't care about this. Guo Jingyi also cooked the meal on the evening of the 25th, but those who went to eat were those who were helping there.

The big iron pot was placed directly outside, and the fragrance spread far away. Wang Shuning could smell it even at the gate of the yard.

She didn't want to go on the 26th, but was dragged there by Zhang Meili.

"Jingyi said that it doesn't matter if we're not relatives. Villagers like to have a good time. As long as you bring money, the food won't be free. There are meat dishes at the wedding banquet. One cent of gift money can buy more than 20 dishes. I think it's a good deal."

Zhang Meili's steps were too fast, and Wang Shuning was dragged along and could hardly keep up. "If it weren't for Guo Jingyi cooking, you wouldn't be so enthusiastic."

Zhang Meili, whose thoughts were guessed, did not hide them. "It's Jingyi's fault for cooking delicious food. I haven't eaten meat for several days. I must eat my fill today."

Wang Shuning didn't have the heart to disappoint her, but she would know when the dishes were served that the aunties in the village were very fast with their hands, especially at wedding banquets, and Zhang Meili probably couldn't grab any of them.

The two men arrived at the gate and found that the yard of He Daoniu's house was full of people. The guests had already sat around the table early, fearing that their seats would be taken away by others.

He Daoniu's son and daughter-in-law stood at the door to welcome the guests, and there was someone next to them who was recording and collecting the gifts.

He Qianghai just made a note and looked up, he saw Zhang Meili and Wang Shuning standing in front of him. He probably didn't invite them to the Niu family, but he invited the chef for the wedding banquet. Even non-relatives came to celebrate and join in the fun. It was too honorable.

Zhang Meili took out a red envelope from her pocket and put it on the table. Wang Shuning arrived so suddenly that he didn't have time to prepare a red envelope, so he took out two cents from his pocket and put it on the table.

The bride's sister-in-law, who was helping out, took the money with a smile and said, "My eldest brother is getting married today, so you sisters should eat and drink well."

He Qianghai wrote down the contributions of the two people. It was really generous for an unmarried girl to give 20 cents as a gift to attend the wedding banquet. You should know that many of He's collateral relatives in the Niu family also gave 10 cents as gifts, and he had to bring a child to the banquet, for fear that he would not be able to make his money back.

"Congratulations, congratulations." Wang Shuning congratulated with a smile. It was her first time to attend such a lively wedding banquet. The wedding atmosphere was particularly strong and everyone who attended had a smile on their face.

Zhang Meili led Wang Shuning through the crowd and got into a corner. When Lv Beichu saw them, he stood up and waved, "Why is it so late? Several groups of people are trying to grab seats. If I hadn't occupied them so tightly, they would have been gone long ago."

Zhang Meili pushed Wang Shuning to sit on a stool. The food hadn't been served yet. "How long will it take for it to start?"

"Half an hour."

Many aunties would take a look when passing by. They knew all the unmarried girls in the village very well, so it was really strange to see all the new female educated youth there.

Hearing that the show would not start for another half an hour, Wang Shuning wanted to sigh.

He took out a handful of peanuts from his pocket and put them in Zhang Meili's hand. So many people came today, and there were not even melon seeds and peanuts on the table.

Come to think of it, it costs several hundred dollars no matter how you look at it, and no matter how many snacks are put out, it will not be enough for the food. The cost of this wedding banquet has skyrocketed because of Guo Jingyi's cooking skills, and I don't know if He Dao Niu's family can recoup the cost through the gift money.

Zhang Meili's eyes lit up when she saw the peanuts. She peeled the shells and started eating. These were the peanuts Wang Shuning had just fried yesterday. She fried them a little yellow on purpose, and they were more fragrant than those sold outside.

Originally, ten people were supposed to sit at a table, but now there were several high stools inserted, so there were fifteen people sitting at the table. Fearing that their seats would be taken, everyone could only sit at the table and wait for the wedding banquet to begin.

Wang Shuning and Zhang Meili were peeling peanuts under the table, but they were too embarrassed to ask for more since their mouths were moving and everyone was looking at them. Only a child sitting next to Wang Shuning called out to her mother, "Mom, I want to eat peanuts, too."

Without thinking, Wang Shuning took out a handful and handed it to the child, "Call me pretty sister and I'll give it to you."

The child spread out his soft little hands and shouted, "Pretty sister, you are so beautiful. You are the most beautiful sister I have ever seen."

Wang Shuning laughed and put the peanuts in his hand. Because there were too many, the peanuts almost fell out of his palm. The child quickly covered them with his other hand to prevent the peanuts from eating dirt. "Thank you, beautiful sister."
