Chapter 1 Rebirth and Wedding Night

The fifth day of the fifth lunar month in 1985.

Today is Lu Huaijiao's 29th birthday, and also the anniversary of her husband's death in the countryside.

Ten years ago, she married Gu Changzheng, the youngest son of the village head of Dawan Village. They lived a chaotic three years together. The year after the college entrance examination was reinstated, she returned to the city to attend university. Meanwhile, her nemesis, Gu Changzheng, was murdered on his way to Shanghai...

She and he didn't have a good relationship.

But she hasn't celebrated her birthday since he passed away.

Today, the housekeeper, unaware of the situation, prepared a table full of dishes for her. She sat alone at the table, looking at the abundance of food, and drank quite a bit of alcohol…

My head hurts, it hurts terribly.

Lu Huaijiao raised her hand to rub her head, and a blurry double image appeared in front of her eyes.

The mottled mud walls, the uneven dirt ground, and the windows pasted with big red "double happiness" characters made her momentarily lose track of time.

"I'm dreaming! I never thought I could have such a dream."

"Lu Huaijiao, if you didn't want to marry me, why did you agree in the first place?"

A haughty male voice rang in her ears, and Lu Huaijiao looked up to see a sharp and fierce face suddenly appear before her.

Tall, broad-shouldered, narrow-waisted, and long-legged—couldn't this be her long-dead nemesis, Gu Changzheng?

"Gu Changzheng? What brings you here?"

Lu Huaijiao never expected to see her deceased lover from many years ago in her dream. She walked up to him and pinched his cheek.

"The texture feels so real, is this what a hangover dream is like? It feels so good, let me hug you again."

Lu Huaijiao leaned closer, opened her arms, and loosely wrapped her arms around the man in front of her, resting her head against his chest.

"Are you doing well over there? Do you have enough money? Have you gotten into any more fights? You've always had a bad temper, so you'll have to be more patient over there, otherwise you'll be surrounded and attacked, and even two fists can't fight four hands."

He has been gone for many years, and she can now treat him with great peace.

When she saw other couples, she even missed him a little.

“If you run out of money, come to me in a dream and tell me that I’ve made money so I can burn more money for you so you don’t have to live a tight life anymore.”

Lu Huaijiao said in a low voice.

Gu Changzheng became more and more confused as he listened. Had Lu Huaijiao hit her head and gone mad? Or did she mistake him for her lover from the city?

"Lu Huaijiao, open your eyes wide and see clearly who I am!"

It's one thing to look down on him because he came from a peasant background, but to treat him like another man? That's intolerable.

Gu Changzheng raised his hand and pushed away Lu Huaijiao, who had been acting strangely.

She hadn't expected that Gu Changzheng in her dream would have such strength. Caught off guard, she bumped into the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed) behind her.

She was hit hard in the waist, and the pain made tears well up in her eyes.

Lu Huaijiao gasped.

Why does it hurt so much in my dream?

"Gu Changzheng!"

She looked up and saw Gu Changzheng's dark face opposite her, which made Lu Huaijiao furious.

"Don't take advantage of my guilt towards you to do whatever you want. Be careful, or you'll offend me and I'll rip your roof off."

Level his tombstone and see where he lives.

Gu Changzheng originally wanted to go forward to see if she had really bumped into something, but upon hearing this, he was so angry that he laughed.

"Lu Huaijiao, how dare you say that? You poisoned the two piglets my mother was raising just to avoid marrying me. How dare you threaten me like this, you vicious woman?"

"What piglets? Those were so many..." Lu Huaijiao wanted to say that this happened so many years ago, why was Gu Changzheng still bringing up old grievances?

Before she could finish speaking, a sweet, delicate voice rang out from outside.

"Brother Changzheng, are you home? I've come to talk to Huaijiao. You two haven't been arguing, have you?"

Who owns this voice?

Lu Huaijiao looked up at Gu Changzheng opposite her, and it took her a while to realize who the voice belonged to.

Good, Gu Changzheng actually dared to find Li Xiaoya in her dream to provoke her. Very good.

"Gu Changzheng, I'll fight you to the death!"

Lu Huaijiao, who had been standing there, suddenly rushed over, jumped up, grabbed Gu Changzheng's head with both hands, hooked her legs tightly around his waist, and pulled his face as hard as she could.

"You, Gu Changzheng, even in death you still come to annoy me in my dreams, don't you? All these years I haven't asked you what your relationship with Li Xiaoya is, but you, you bring her into my dreams."

"You're something else, Gu Changzheng. I'll go dig up your grave tomorrow and divorce you! Divorce me!"

Lu Huaijiao, true to her name, was a delicate city girl. Her skin was like jade and her face like a peony. She was not good at work and had a bad temper. Her delicate hands grabbed Gu Changzheng's buzz cut so hard that they could almost rip his scalp off.

Gu Changzheng, just bear it!

Remembering Lu Huaijiao's father's instructions, he restrained himself again and again, and managed not to pull the person off him.

But that doesn't mean he'll listen to her nonsense.

"Lu Huaijiao, you crazy woman, let go! Let go now! If you don't let go, I'll hit you."

"Go ahead and try. If you dare to touch a single hair on my head, I'll smash your skull and feed it to the dogs."

"Lu Huaijiao, you vicious woman... Ouch... Let go, let go now!"

"Thump..." There was a sound of something falling to the ground.

"Lu Huaijiao, my head! You shrew, you shrew!"

"Let go! Let go! If you don't let go, I'll hit you back!"

Inside the room adorned with bright red "double happiness" characters, a man's threatening voice echoed continuously.

Li Xiaoya's eyes lit up as she reached the door. She called out "Brother Changzheng" and pushed the door open.

The sunlight streamed in from outside.
