Gu Changzheng quickly shook his head.
"Jiaojiao, I made you a swing. Shall I carry you to see it?"
Gu Changzheng was a smart man. When faced with a question he couldn't answer, he would immediately change the subject.
Sure enough, Lu Huaijiao's attention was diverted.
"A swing?"
"Yes, I've finished it. I'll paint it tomorrow, and it'll be ready to use in a few days. Shall I take you to see it now?"
The rough man's tone carried a hint of coquetry and flattery.
Lu Huaijiao glanced sideways at the man beside her and snorted.
"Fine, go see how bad your cooking is."
"Welcome Comrade Lu Huaijiao for your guidance."
"snort!"
Gu Changzheng is a good-for-nothing.
Lu Huaijiao decided to make him happy first.
He carried her to the yard, where she saw their small courtyard, which wasn't spacious but belonged only to them. Sure enough, next to the newly built wall, there was a swing that still smelled of wood.
Lu Huaijiao wrapped her arms around Gu Changzheng's neck, glanced lazily at the swing she had fallen in love with at first sight, and snorted, saying something she didn't mean: "Your workmanship is really bad."
Gu Changzheng held the person in his arms with one hand and a flashlight in the other. Upon hearing Lu Huaijiao's words, his hand holding the flashlight trembled, and he almost dropped it.
"I wonder what insightful opinion Comrade Jiaojiao has?"
"This swing is in the yard, with no shade or shelter. Do you want me to get so sunburned?"
"Yes, there's more."
Gu Changzheng asked questions humbly.
He knew that the little drama queen's demands would go far beyond this, and since he would have to give in to her anyway, he might as well agree now to make her happy and forget about the divorce.
Seeing that Gu Changzheng was so humble in seeking advice, Lu Huaijiao naturally didn't hold back her own insightful opinions.
He pointed to the yard and began making arrangements.
“Plant a row of climbing flowers along the wall, and by next spring, all the brick walls will be transformed into flower walls. Move the swing to that spot, plant an osmanthus tree there, and place the swing under the osmanthus tree.”
"That way, when I swing on the swing, I can smell the fragrance of osmanthus."
"And over there, next to where you dug the well, you should build a grape trellis. When the grapes are ripe, you can pick them and wash them with well water without having to go far."
Her requirements weren't many.
However, to anyone of this era, each and every one of these things would be considered a fantasy.
Nowadays, thrift is valued, and everyone should be hardworking and frugal.
If someone were to report Lu Huaijiao for hedonism, given her penchant for gardening and building grape trellises, the report would be accurate every time.
Even with these conditions, Gu Changzheng was willing to comply with her.
"Once all these things are done, you are no longer allowed to mention divorce so easily."
He also had conditions.
Lu Huaijiao let out a "yo-ho".
"Gu Changzheng, you're something else, actually making demands of me?"
Gu Changzheng pursed his lips, looking at her still swollen red lips, and hardened his heart: "Will you agree or not?"
"No way!"
Lu Huaijiao answered without the slightest hesitation.
Gu Changzheng choked, almost dying of anger at Lu Huaijiao.
He lowered his eyes and stared fiercely at the little darling in his arms. If he weren't so reluctant to part with her, he would have swallowed her whole without hesitation.
How can there be such infuriating people?
But she's so self-righteous, as if she thinks she can take advantage of me?
(Lu Huaijiao: No, I didn't, I didn't, don't talk nonsense. I don't eat things with thick skin.)
Gu Chang gritted his teeth, with a hint of helplessness: "Lu Huaijiao... you're allowed to set conditions, but I'm not allowed to make any requests?"
"You're only finding out now?" Lu Huaijiao smiled and looked up at Gu Changzheng.
Her smile was so sweet, with two dimples on her cheeks that could almost drown a person.
“In our family, it’s a case of ‘the magistrate is allowed to set fires, but the common people are forbidden to light lamps!’” She paused slightly, then continued, “In our family, it’s obvious that you’re just an ordinary person without any power!”
"Gu Changzheng, haven't you realized your place yet?"
Would Gu Changzheng dare to answer that he didn't?
I dare not.
Didn't you hear what that troublemaker said? At home, he's just an ordinary citizen with no say whatsoever.
"Yes, Gu, a commoner, dares not question Magistrate Lu."
"Good to know."
Lu Huaijiao whined and acted very arrogantly.
After looking at her swing, Lu Huaijiao asked Gu Changzheng to carry her to dinner. After eating and drinking her fill, brushing her teeth and washing her face, Lu Huaijiao sat on the bed, flipping through a small box and counting money.
Gu Changzheng finished washing up and went to the room. He saw that she had originally counted out a hundred yuan, but said it was too much, so she took back two large ten-yuan bills.
Someone was muttering to themselves somewhere, but no one knew what they were saying.
Gu Changzheng asked with a smile, "Are you going to give Mom money again?"
"No, it's for you."
Lu Huaijiao answered without looking up.
This made Gu Changzheng feel flattered and surprised.
"Give it to me? Jiaojiao, you don't need to..." He was about to say that he didn't need to be so nice to him, but before he could finish speaking, Lu Huaijiao handed him seventy yuan.
"Take this money and go out to start your own business. Don't worry, Mom and Dad, I'll take care of you."
Gu Changzheng was stunned for a moment, staring at the seventy yuan in Lu Huaijiao's hand.
"Lu Huaijiao, are you trying to get rid of your man with seventy yuan?"
"Am I not generous enough? Don't you know how many people get divorced these days and don't give each other a single penny?"
