Chapter 14 Renting a House

There were no phone chargers, no restrooms, and no red buckets.

It has only one washbasin, but it also serves as a foot basin, hand basin, washbasin, laundry basin... it bears all the burdens that it shouldn't have to bear at its age.

Xu Qingcheng watched all this, and her whole body began to tremble.

"Aunt Liu, is this where Xiao Mo lives? Why did you arrange for him to live in such a place? With the Xu family's wealth, can't we afford to furnish him with a better room?"

"Miss, please don't make things difficult for me. This is not something I can decide. Besides, Madam initially said it was to train Young Master Mo, because he is an orphan and used to living in poverty. She was afraid that giving him too much money at once would make him live too well and develop a habit of spending money recklessly, so..."

"But this is too..."

Xu Qingcheng's mind began to replay the scenes of Xu Mo spending four years in this place, and she felt a heaviness in her chest and a slight pain in her heart.

Aunt Liu sighed, "Miss, actually, you and the other young ladies, including Young Master Feng and Master, all agreed to this matter at the time, so we vacated this room for Young Master Mo."

Xu Qingcheng forced back the tears welling up in her eyes, then turned her gaze to the wardrobe.

“I believe that one of the other sisters must have noticed him and secretly given him some money, so I guess there must be some valuable everyday items in this wardrobe.”

The cabinet wasn't locked; it was simply hung up by a piece of wood.

"Creak—"

Xu Qingcheng opened the closet. Inside, besides a school uniform, there was a sealed shirt, a pair of shorts, and a pair of sneakers. There were no other expensive luxury items.

The shirt, shorts, and sneakers all looked brand new, so why had she never seen Xu Mo wear them?

"Aunt Liu, why isn't Xiao Mo wearing the clothes that his family bought for him?"

“I often see young master Mo opening the closet and hugging these clothes to his chest. He hasn’t been able to wear them all these years. It’s probably because they were bought for him by Madam that he hasn’t been able to wear them,” sighed Aunt Liu.

Xu Qingcheng recalled the first time Xu Mo came home. When he received the gifts his mother had bought for him, his eyes shone brightly as he held them in his arms like treasures.

At the time, she and her sisters wore expressions of utter disdain, even mocking Xu Mo for being lowly, unsophisticated, and easily satisfied just because he came from an orphanage…

He didn't seem to mind, just holding the clothes with a smile on his face: "Mom bought this for me."

Tears welled up in Xu Qingcheng's eyes and burst forth like a dam breaking. She excitedly hugged Liu Ma's shoulders and shook her.

"How could this happen! Aunt Liu, how could Xiao Mo be living such a miserable life?"
