The sound came through the receiver and echoed in the cramped car interior.
I glanced down at my phone's caller ID and froze instantly.
[Su Mingyang!]
Wasn't he driving?
I turned to look at Su Mingyang.
The dim light shone on his face, which was pale and stiff.
"Speak up, where are you?"
My head is buzzing.
It was indeed Su Mingyang's voice on the other end of the phone.
And who is this person driving next to me?
Su Mingyang noticed my unusual behavior and turned to look at me: "Why are you so nervous? Who called?"
In the dim light, his face looked exceptionally unfamiliar and cold.
I hung up the phone and said calmly, "It was Sister Wu who called. She said the female corpse has been cremated."
Su Mingyang chuckled twice: "Sister Wu called you so late at night just to talk about this? You two have quite a relationship. Tell me the truth, have you two been hooking up for a while now? You've been putting on an act in front of me all this time."
I turned to look out the window and said no.
Perhaps sensing that I didn't want to talk, Su Mingyang scoffed and didn't press the matter further.
The atmosphere instantly became deathly silent again.
As he drove further and further off the road, the surface became increasingly bumpy and uneven, and he had no idea where he was going.
I asked Su Mingyang to park the car first.
To everyone's surprise, Su Mingyang not only didn't stop, but instead drove even faster.
"parking!"
I roared, startling Su Mingyang so much that he slammed on the brakes and glared at me reproachfully: "Are you trying to summon my soul?"
I thought to myself, aren't you the soul? I'm calling back the soul.
I clutched my stomach, pretending to have a stomachache, and quickly said, "Wait here for me for a moment, my stomach hurts a little, I need to go to the bathroom."
Su Mingyang glanced outside and said, "Why don't you hold it in until you get home? It's stormy and dark outside, it's not safe."
I felt unsafe next to you.
"I can't hold it in anymore."
After I finished speaking, I pushed open the car door and walked out before he could say anything.
As we walked to the back of the car, Su Mingyang rolled down the window and shouted to me, "Old Chen, you didn't bring any tissues?"
"I'll bring your dad!"
After cursing, I immediately switched to sprint mode and ran forward like crazy.
The muddy road was narrow, and because of the rain, many of the car wheels got stuck. It would take Su Mingyang quite a while to turn around and catch up with me.
Through the sound of the rain, I could still hear Su Mingyang chasing after me in the rain.
"Old Chen, where are you going? Come back quickly."
"What are you doing, running like that? Stop right now..."
The more he shouted, the faster I ran.
Because the road ahead was downhill, my foot slipped, and I rolled forward, actually going much faster.
I don't know how long I ran, but I stopped when I stopped hearing any sound behind me.
However, as soon as it stopped, I was stunned.
Isn't this the entrance to Liuwei Village?
How did I end up back here?
Is it a case of being trapped in a maze?
I took out my phone and called the real Su Mingyang.
The call went through quickly.
Before I could even speak, I heard him cursing on the other end of the phone: "Old Chen, where the hell are you? Are you messing with your dad in the middle of the night?"
I glanced around at the pitch-black surroundings and asked him, "I'm at the village entrance, where are you?"
"I've been waiting for you for ages, and I can't get through on the phone. I thought you'd gone into the village. Wait a minute, I'll turn around."
I quickly said, "Don't hang up yet, I'm scared."
I said I was scared, but I just wanted to confirm whether the person who came was really Su Mingyang.
Unexpectedly, Su Mingyang also said on the phone, "I wanted you not to hang up, I'm scared too."
About two minutes later, two orange lights shone from the darkness. The lights were blinding, and I struggled to open my eyes to barely make out the person sitting in the car, but I wasn't sure if it was Su Mingyang.
"Did you drive here?" I asked, holding up my phone.
"Isn't that obvious? Besides your dad, who else would come to pick you up in the rain late at night?"
Su Mingyang seemed a little angry, his words full of hostility.
The car stopped in front of me very quickly.
Seeing Su Mingyang struggling to get out of the car with a black umbrella, I asked in confusion, "Why are you using an umbrella in the car?"
"If you don't prepare beforehand, you'll get soaked when you get off the bus."
Su Mingyang gripped the black umbrella tightly, which was about to be blown away, and questioned me with an annoyed look: "What are you doing in the middle of the night? Why are you here? It's so dark and scary."
The wind was terrifyingly strong, and the black umbrella in Su Mingyang's hand was shaking violently, almost slipping out of his grasp.
The trees on both sides were also swaying in the wind.
I glanced back in the direction I came from and sighed.
"You might not believe it, but I was sleeping soundly at home when I woke up and found myself inexplicably standing in Old Liu's house. Then some dirty thing transformed into your appearance and impersonated you to deceive me."
Su Mingyang's eyes widened, his already pale face turning even whiter: "Old Liu? Wasn't he already dead? And...and he turned into my likeness?"
I hummed in agreement and said we should talk about it when we got back; the storm was too big.
What I was trying to say was that if we didn't leave soon, the evil thing would come chasing us again.
But I didn't dare say it.
Su Mingyang turned pale with fright just hearing the name "Old Liu," and I'm afraid he wouldn't even be able to stand up if I said a few more words.
"Get on the bus, hurry up and get on the bus!"
Su Mingyang's legs were trembling so badly he could barely walk. He held onto the car door with one hand and awkwardly held the black umbrella in the other.
Because the wind was too strong, he could only hold the black umbrella between his neck and shoulder.
Seeing how awkward he was, I stepped forward and said I would help him carry it.
"Need not!"
Su Mingyang twisted his body and dodged it.
I was just about to say something like, "Baby, why are you so nervous?"
Just as I was about to speak, I realized something was wrong.
A tree branch as thick as a bowl was stuck in the back of Su Mingyang's head.
The branch was deeply embedded in his head, but he seemed oblivious, only tightly gripping the black umbrella in his hand.
A phrase my grandfather once said suddenly flashed through my mind.
He said that on nights with thunder and lightning and torrential rain, the boundary between the mortal and spiritual realms is most blurred, and wandering ghosts will take the opportunity to cause trouble.
However, these ghosts who have recently died are taboo during thunderstorms. They are deterred by the extremely strong and yang energy of thunder and lightning and cannot act recklessly.
You have to carry a black umbrella if you want to come out.
Only vengeful ghosts or wronged spirits controlled by evil magic can break free from this bondage.
"What are you staring at? Get in the car!" Su Mingyang urged impatiently from the driver's seat.
He sat in the driver's seat and leaned back casually. The tree branch stuck in the back of his head went straight through to the front of his head, but he seemed completely unaware of it.
Even more terrifying, the branch had torn a large gash in his forehead where it had passed through.
There was no blood gushing from the wound, nor was there a brain as it should have been; only a few sticks, seemingly used for support, appeared particularly eerie in the dim light.
This isn't Su Mingyang at all, it's clearly a paper doll!
