"Haunted house?"
I muttered to myself unconsciously.
Looking around, all I could see was a cluster of old residential buildings.
The walls were mottled, the plaster had peeled off, revealing the gray-black bricks underneath. In the dim morning light, they exuded an indescribable sense of antiquity and decay.
I couldn't help but wonder, which house was the haunted one?
Just then, my gaze fell on a crooked house number on the side of the street.
The lettering on the sign was blurry, but after careful examination, I was still stunned.
How did I end up in "Fenglinyuan Community" without even realizing it?
This place is more than ten kilometers away from Nanping Street.
Last night I was so focused on escaping that I didn't even realize I'd traveled such a long distance. This is so strange.
"Young man, you young people, even though you have a lot of yang energy, you shouldn't go to places like this casually, it's bad luck."
The elderly cleaning lady's voice interrupted my thoughts.
As she spoke, she slowly moved forward with a broom in hand, her steps appearing somewhat heavy.
As I watched her retreating figure, my curiosity got the better of me, and I casually asked, "Grandma, could you tell me which house here is haunted?"
Upon hearing this, the old lady didn't stop walking or turn her head. She gestured with her chin toward my side and said, "Look, this is the only one. The whole building is like this."
Is the whole building a haunted house?
This isn't just a haunted house, it's a haunted building!
I wanted to ask a few more questions, but the old lady was already walking further and further away, her figure becoming more and more blurred, and soon she disappeared around the corner.
I stood there, staring at the old woman, but no matter how I looked at her, there seemed to be nothing special about her.
But for some reason, the more I looked at it, the stranger it seemed, yet I couldn't quite put my finger on what was wrong.
Left with no other choice, I walked out of the alley and hailed a taxi.
The car started slowly and drove smoothly on the street.
As the car passed a huge billboard, my gaze inadvertently swept over it.
In that instant, I finally understood where that strange feeling came from.
A circus performance is playing on the screen.
In the video, a slender woman in a tight-fitting sequined outfit is performing a breathtaking acrobatic act.
She stood firmly on the ground, and then her upper body, as if boneless, slowly bent backward.
That supple body, like a nimble snake, even stretched its head out from between its legs. The whole movement was fluid and eerie, sending chills down one's spine.
Just then, the scene of my conversation with the cleaning lady flashed through my mind.
At the time, I asked her which house was haunted, and she kept walking forward, but I could clearly see her pursing her lips.
How could a normal person possibly do such a movement without turning around?
unless……
Her head can twist to her back!
Thinking of this, a chill ran from the soles of my feet straight to the top of my head.
Over a period of more than ten hours, I bumped into four dirty things in a row.
Grandpa Jin, Su Ming, the old man selling sweet potatoes, and that strangely behaving cleaning lady from earlier—each of them exuded an inexplicable eeriness.
Sitting in the car now, I even started to wonder if this was a hearse.
Once this thought popped into my head, I couldn't sit still any longer. I frantically pulled out a lighter from my pocket, intending to use the fire to test if there was anything unusual around me.
As soon as I took out my lighter, the driver, as if he had eyes in the back of his head, suddenly turned around, looked at me, and said loudly, "Smoking is not allowed on the bus."
It's common knowledge that you can't smoke when taking a taxi, but the situation is different now, so I don't care about that anymore.
With a heavy heart, I pressed the lighter without thinking.
The flame suddenly shot out, and I quickly held the lighter to the edge of the car window, keeping my eyes glued to it, afraid of missing any abnormality.
Thankfully, it didn't catch fire; it wasn't a paper car.
Are you crazy?!
The driver was startled by my actions and immediately started cursing.
I then came to my senses and realized that my behavior had been a bit too extreme, so I quickly apologized with a big smile on my face.
"Brother, I'm so sorry, I... When my craving for cigarettes kicks in, my mind goes blank. I'm really sorry."
The car sped along and finally arrived at West Street.
I kept Liu Sandao's words in mind: as long as I could survive the night, I would come to him and he would help me.
To express my apology to the driver, I paid an extra twenty yuan for the fare, then hurriedly jumped off the bus and ran towards the place where I had met Liu Sandao yesterday.
But when they arrived, they couldn't find Liu Sandao anywhere; there were only pedestrians coming and going, and all sorts of stalls along the street.
Did he push his cart to another place to sell braised meat?
I started to have doubts, but I decided to keep looking along the street anyway.
The sun rose higher and higher, and the scorching sunlight baked the ground until it was burning hot. I kept moving around the street, my eyes not missing any corner.
I searched until noon, and by then I was exhausted, panting and thirsty.
I couldn't hold on any longer, so I decided to go to the nearby convenience store to buy a bottle of water, grab something to eat, and replenish my energy before continuing my search.
Just as I was about to walk into the convenience store, I suddenly heard a man's gruff voice behind me.
"Hey you, what are you doing downstairs at my house?"
