Da Niu's movements were incredibly fast.
Before our brains could even process it, he had already rushed to the dry well.
It wasn't until he was completely pressed against the well opening that Ah Wei snapped out of his daze and yelled at the top of his lungs, "Don't look!"
Xiao Sanzi instinctively reached out to grab Da Niu, but it was too late.
Da Niu straightened up, his voice trembling slightly, and said, "Akai isn't inside."
After saying that, he turned and left, his steps unsteady, as if he were walking on cotton.
I stared intently at him, my heart skipping a beat.
Ever since he looked into the well, his face has been as white as paper, without a trace of blood.
It wasn't like a normal person turning pale with fright; it was as white as a dead person.
Xiao Sanzi hurriedly chased after him.
"Da Niu, what did you see? What's inside the well?"
Others followed suit, asking questions out of curiosity.
"Is it like what Awei said, that there are people who died in the well before?"
"Are you really sure you didn't see Kai? His voice sounded like it was coming from a well!"
The big bull suddenly stopped, its eyes wide open as if it wanted to devour someone.
Veins bulged on his neck as he roared, "I told you Kai isn't in there! He's not in there! What else do you want?"
As he spoke, he grabbed the young man who had questioned whether Akai was in the well by the collar, like picking up a chick, and dragged him toward the dry well, cursing all the while.
"Did you see Kai fall in with your own eyes or what? You don't believe me, do you? If you don't believe me, then go down and see for yourself!"
He forcefully pressed the young man's head into the dry well, as if he were really going to throw him in.
Xiao Sanzi, Da Pao, and another person were so frightened that they quickly hugged Da Niu from behind.
But this usually mild-mannered ox was surprisingly strong at this moment, and three people couldn't even lift him.
The young man was so frightened that he gripped the edge of the dry well tightly with both hands, closed his eyes, and screamed at the top of his lungs, "Help! Help!"
Finally, it took all of us working together to drag the ox back.
"Da Niu, are you fucking crazy? You want to kill me?!"
The young man who was almost pushed into the well was still in shock. He picked up a stone from the ground and was about to rush towards Da Niu to fight him.
Da Niu stood there with his head down, like a wooden stake, without saying a word, and it was unclear what he was thinking.
Perhaps knowing he was in the wrong, he neither refuted nor dodged the accusations; he simply stood there, unmoved.
I looked up at the sky; it was gloomy.
"Let's hurry up and go, it looks like it's going to get foggy."
Upon hearing what I said, everyone raised their heads and looked into the distance.
A thin layer of fog had begun to rise from the road leading down the mountain.
Although visibility is still acceptable, the fog rose so suddenly in this desolate wilderness, which seemed rather strange.
The young man who had just been so aggressive, ready to fight Da Niu to the death, had now fallen silent, his eyes filled with terror as he looked around.
"Big brother, what do we do now?" Xiao Sanzi leaned close to me, his voice trembling.
I gritted my teeth and said, "Let's go down the mountain first. If we don't leave now, it will be difficult to get down once the fog rolls in."
"But Kai, we still haven't found him!" Xiao Sanzi frowned, looking anxious.
I looked at him and said seriously, "Either go down the mountain, or you take people to look for them. Anyway, I'm leaving here. I'm not a saint, and I have no obligation to help you look for people."
Actually, there's something I haven't said yet—
I suspect that Ah Kai is probably in grave danger.
I thought my suggestion would provoke dissatisfaction from others, who would call me cold-blooded.
Unexpectedly, everyone remained silent and followed me forward quietly.
Alas, it's true, when it comes to life and death, people think of themselves first.
Because of Akai's disappearance and Da Niu's unusual behavior, everyone remained silent the entire way, with only heavy breathing echoing in their ears.
We quickened our pace, wanting to get down the mountain before the fog completely enveloped us. But the white fog seemed to have a life of its own, spreading at an astonishing speed and soon surrounding us.
I slowed down and shouted to everyone, "Hold hands, everyone, don't fall behind!"
I walked at the front of the group, with Xiao Sanzi holding my hand tightly behind me.
Behind him was Awei, then Da Niu, Lao Pao, the young man who almost got pushed into the dry well, and three more people behind him.
We cautiously made our way forward through the thick fog.
The further you go, the lower the visibility becomes.
As I walked, I suddenly felt the hand holding my hand from behind become unusually cold, as if it had just been taken out of an ice cellar.
I was startled and instinctively turned my head to see if Xiao Sanzi was cold.
But when I turned my head, Xiao Sanzi's expression was perfectly normal.
He was looking at me with a puzzled expression.
Just then, I heard Ah Wei's voice from the middle of the group: "Why do I feel like someone is tugging at my clothes?"
There was a clear sense of fear in the voice.
"Don't scare yourself." The old man said this, but his voice was trembling.
After walking a few more steps, I heard a soft counting voice behind me: "One, two, three... seven, eight, nine, ten... wait a minute, there are only nine of us, how did we count to ten?"
It was the voice of the young man who was almost pushed into the dry well.
At this moment, his voice was already trembling with sobs.
Ten people?
As soon as he said that, I heard several sounds of people swallowing.
As soon as these words were spoken, everyone stopped in their tracks, exchanging bewildered glances, their faces filled with growing terror.
