Chapter 10 They Came Knocking

It was the matchmaker's voice.

Didn't they kidnap Old Man Liu to be their groom?

Why did you come to my house?

However, the next second, I realized something was wrong.

This is not my home!

The house was a mess, like a garbage dump, with clothes and other items scattered haphazardly in every corner.

Some of them have become moldy and blackened, mixed with dust, making it impossible to distinguish their original appearance.

A pungent odor wafted over, a mixture of sweat, mildew, and some other indescribable smells.

The television had been turned on at some point, and a cold, eerie light seeped from the screen like will-o'-the-wisps.

Old Liu's pale and ferocious face appeared starkly on the screen.

Holding a leather whip, he lunged at the bloodstained Samoyed, whose limbs were tightly bound to a wooden board with chains.

This is Old Liu's home!

Am I sleeping at home?

How did you end up at Old Liu's house out of nowhere?

And I remember I was wearing only underwear before I went to bed, but now I'm fully dressed.

My hair, clothes, pants, and shoes were all wet.

He looked like he had just been pulled out of the water.

Outside, a torrential downpour was accompanied by lightning and thunder.

Are you dreaming?

I slapped myself hard, my cheek burning with pain.

This is not a dream!

Outside the door, the sound of the matchmaker's saw, like a saw repeatedly cutting across wood, rang out again and again.

"The auspicious hour has arrived, the groom mounts his horse to welcome his bride!" I took two steps back to the window and looked out. It was pitch black outside, and I didn't see the wedding procession.

Because Old Liu lived in a single-story house, I easily climbed over the wall.

After I got out, I took off running in the opposite direction.

I don't know how long I ran.

When I was so tired that I couldn't run anymore, I realized that I had actually run to the entrance of Liuwei Village.

Liuwei Village is about one or two kilometers away from the funeral home.

Because this area is designated for relocation, most residents have already moved out, except for two or three elderly households who are unwilling to move. The entire village is dark and gloomy.

I took out my phone and called Su Mingyang.

Su Mingyang finally answered after several attempts.

"Hey Lao Chen, are you out of your mind? What are you doing up in the middle of the night?"

Before I could even speak, I heard a woman's voice coming from the other end of the phone.

"Hey, stop talking and move around a bit."

It looks like Su Mingyang went to deliver warmth again.

No, why should the matchmaker come to me and not him?

Just because there are two of them?

"Old Su, where are you? Come pick me up in Liuwei Village." I shouted into the phone.

No sooner had he finished speaking than I heard Su Mingyang shout, "Holy crap!"

"Old Chen, what are you doing at the crematorium in the middle of the night?"

I said, "It's hard to explain over the phone. Come over here first. I'm at the entrance of Liuwei Village."

"Okay, I'll be right there..."

The next second, the woman's voice rang out again: "Boss, where are you going so late at night? I still need you."

"Go ask your dad! My brother is in trouble, I have to go there. You rest well, get dressed, and go on your own."

Then I heard him hurriedly putting on his clothes.

I stood alone in the downpour, not daring to move, afraid that Su Mingyang wouldn't be able to find me when he arrived.

I don't know how much time passed, but two orange lights shone through the rain curtain onto my face.

I half-covered my eyes with my hand and squinted as I looked ahead.

It's Su Mingyang's car.

Before it had even come to a complete stop, I opened the car door and jumped in.

"Old Chen, what's wrong with you? Why are you running around here so late at night?"

As I quickly fastened my seatbelt, I yelled at him, "Don't ask any more questions, just drive! The wedding procession is here!"

Upon hearing the words "wedding procession," Su Mingyang didn't dare to ask any further questions and stepped on the gas, driving off.

After driving for a while, I realized something was wrong.

This kid must be terrified, why is he driving into the village?

Just as I was about to remind him that he was going the wrong way, I told him to quickly turn around.

Before I could even say anything, I heard a piercing cell phone ringtone.

I instinctively picked up the phone and said hello.

"Old Chen, where are you? I've arrived, but I can't find you!"
