Luo Tianhe had already started arresting people in a flurry of activity, and I didn't dare to delay. I immediately headed in the direction where the "me" who had just finished receiving the award had disappeared.
However, after searching around, I still couldn't find that "me".
Just as I was filled with anxiety, I suddenly saw Li Hui squatting in the shadows in the corner, head down, engrossed in playing on his phone.
I rushed over: "Xiao Hui, have you seen Chen Yan?"
Li Hui looked up at me, hesitated for a moment, and then said, "Chen Yan, I think I just saw him."
Upon hearing this, I quickly asked, "Where did he go? Tell me quickly!"
Li Hui pointed his finger in the direction of morgue number three: "He went that way with Brother Su."
I quickly said thank you and ran towards morgue number three.
I haven't been back here since the strange things that happened to Su Mingyang and me in Morgue No. 3.
Now that we're getting closer again, a familiar sense of unease washes over me.
Morgue No. 3 remained in its dilapidated state.
The walls were mottled, and several roof tiles had fallen off.
Two funeral home employees were sitting at the entrance, chatting and warming themselves by a fire.
The firelight illuminated their faces, flickering between light and shadow.
I hurried inside, but one of the employees quickly stood up and blocked my way.
"Sir, that's the morgue. They're doing something right now. You've come to the wrong place."
That's when I noticed that the employee who stopped me was Lao Zhang, who was in charge of equipment maintenance at the funeral home.
The guy next to me is Old Wang, he manages the files.
I quickly explained, "I need to go to the morgue."
Old Zhang looked at me suspiciously, scrutinized me for a moment, and asked, "Are you Li Hui's relative?"
"Li Hui?"
I was about to break free from his hand and rush towards morgue number three when I heard this and I froze.
Say I'm not.
Old Zhang frowned, his tone somewhat displeased: "If that's not it, why are you rushing in, sir?"
I snapped out of my daze and asked in surprise, "You mean Li Hui is dead? While he was on business?"
Old Zhang nodded, a hint of regret on his face.
I pressed further, "Is it Li Hui, the body mover from the funeral home?"
Old Zhang nodded again in confirmation.
My mind went completely blank for a moment.
Wasn't Li Hui just talking to me?
I instinctively turned my head to look at that corner, where Li Hui was still squatting, scrolling through his phone.
I pointed at him and said, "Isn't he over there?"
Old Zhang and Old Wang's expressions changed drastically. They exchanged a glance and looked at me as if I were a lunatic.
"Sir, what are you saying? Li Hui accidentally fell down the stairs three days ago while moving the body. He hit his head on the step and died on the spot. The body has been in the morgue and will be taken for cremation soon."
Old Wang chimed in, "Yes, this child is so pitiful, so young, what a pity."
The two whispered among themselves, their faces full of sympathy.
Just then, Su Mingyang, dressed in black, strode out of morgue number three.
He paused slightly when he saw me, but quickly turned to look at Lao Zhang and Lao Wang beside me.
"Has the car arrived yet? How long will it take? The person will be out soon."
Old Zhang quickly replied, "The car has been arranged, and it should arrive in about ten minutes."
I hesitated for a moment, then called out to him, "Su Mingyang!"
Su Mingyang turned his head and looked at me with a puzzled expression, as if he was trying hard to remember who I was.
"Sir, do you... recognize me?"
I looked him over carefully.
He looked haggard and had lost a lot of weight since the last time they parted.
Originally, the blind eye socket contained a cheap glass prosthetic eye.
Before I could speak, Su Mingyang exclaimed "Eh!" and stared intently at me, asking a question.
"Sir, haven't we met somewhere before? You look so familiar."
I thought to myself, how could it not look familiar?
I'm your brother, someone you've been with day and night!
I thought for a moment and then tentatively said, "The waning moon reflects the corpse, and the sound of knocking on the coffin at midnight is terrifying."
Su Mingyang was taken aback, and subconsciously replied, "A solitary lamp illuminates a secluded room, two people embolden each other with their shadows by their side."
After he finished speaking, his eyes widened suddenly, and he looked at me with a shocked expression, as if he had seen a ghost.
This code was something we jokingly wrote down when we watched "Sewing the Corpse, Suppressing the Ghostly Calamity" together.
Although many people have seen this code, it can't really be a coincidence, right?
Seeing that he matched, I was overjoyed and certain that this was indeed the real Su Mingyang.
The reason I suddenly started exchanging passwords is that I've experienced too many strange things lately, and I'm really afraid that Su Mingyang in front of me is also one of those strange creatures of unknown origin.
"Let's talk in private!"
I grabbed Su Mingyang and pulled him aside, but my eyes remained alertly fixed on the direction of the morgue.
"Is Chen Yan inside?" I asked.
"Uh, yes, I am. No, you..." Su Mingyang frowned, his face full of doubt.
I took a deep breath and stated my identity directly: "I am Chen Yan, your brother!"
Su Mingyang's mouth gaped open, as if an egg could fit inside, and then he burst out laughing.
With a hint of teasing on his face, he said, "Grandpa, don't joke with me. My brother Chen Yan is busy inside right now. Look at you, you're several generations older than me. I don't have a friend like you who is so much older than me. You've gone a bit too far with your joke."
