I fully expected this man to scold us without even asking what happened.
Unexpectedly, he glared at the woman and hissed, "Shut up! You shrew, don't talk nonsense in front of Old Master Chen."
The woman was speechless, her face filled with disbelief, but under the man's stern gaze, she reluctantly shut her mouth.
The man turned around and bowed apologetically to my grandfather.
“Mr. Chen, my wife was reckless this time and offended the madam and young master. I hope you won’t take it to heart. It’s all because I haven’t disciplined her properly that she has caused such trouble.”
His attitude was incredibly sincere, and his eyes revealed a deep respect for his grandfather.
Grandpa looked calmly at the woman and the little girl hiding behind her, still somewhat shaken, and didn't say anything, just nodded slightly.
The man hesitated for a moment, then asked again, "Mr. Chen, what about that matter we discussed before..."
Grandpa just sighed softly and said slowly, "When you get back, light three incense sticks at the door and have the child step over them. Don't come here again."
Clearly, Grandpa didn't want to answer the man's question.
Unable to get the answer he wanted, the man looked disappointed, sighed heavily, and then turned and left with his wife and daughter.
He never came to our village again after that.
I never saw the little girl who gave me candy again.
When they saw her again, she was a mutilated corpse.
