Xia's eyes widened, and she was so frightened that her pigtails almost burst into tears.
I applauded inwardly; that acting was superb.
If she were prettier, playing a leading role would be a piece of cake.
This acting is better than that of many female stars.
"I...I'll ask!"
The girl with twin tails was already terrified and didn't dare to say anything more.
I could only grit my teeth and tremble as I gripped the red pen.
The moment the pen tip touched the paper, the porcelain plate suddenly made a "click" sound.
"When you hold the pen, imagine the immortal master's hand covering yours."
The girl with pigtails trembled.
After closing my eyes and taking a deep breath, I stretched out my right hand with trembling hands.
The moment her fingertips touched the red pen, the candlelight suddenly and strangely shifted towards her.
The flames of the four black candles simultaneously bent into an arc shape, as if blown by an invisible wind.
"Ouija board spirit, Ouija board spirit, I am you. I have a question and hope for your guidance..."
Xia chanted the incantation in a drawn-out voice, and the wooden sword drew an arc above the porcelain plate, with the coin spinning along with the sword's shadow.
"If I can answer, my pen will move swiftly and gracefully; if I cannot answer, I will leave it unanswered."
The girl with pigtails followed along, her voice growing softer and softer until the last few words were almost a sob.
The red pen suddenly trembled at her fingertips, as if it had gained its own consciousness, and slowly moved towards the center of the white paper.
The girl with pigtails suddenly looked up, her expression showing some fear.
"It moved...it moved! The pen moved!"
The pink-haired girl exclaimed, her silver-gray nails digging wrinkles into the tablecloth, no longer as composed as before.
The red pen drew crooked circles on the paper.
The girl with pigtails screamed and let go: "I didn't move it! The pen moved by itself!"
The red pen fell onto the table with a "thud".
She recoiled as if electrocuted, the chair legs scraping against the floor with a screeching sound.
Xia's expression changed drastically. She slammed her wooden sword heavily against the edge of the porcelain plate, causing the coin to bounce up and fall back down.
"Who told you to put it down?!"
She took half a step forward, and the wind stirred up by her Taoist robe extinguished a candle: "The immortal master has not left, and a broken pen is like a severed pulse!"
The girl with pigtails trembled all over, tears streaming down her face: "I'm so sorry... I didn't mean to... What do we do now?"
Xia took out a talisman from her pocket, lit it with a lighter, and threw it into a porcelain plate.
The flames leaped up instantly, making her pupils appear red: "Please have them again!"
She grabbed the hand with pigtails and pressed it against the pen: "Hold on! If you let go again, you'll have three more bloody marks on your wrist!"
Xiaoyue gripped my sleeve tightly, her nails almost digging into my flesh, her voice trembling: "Master... is something really going to happen?"
I stared at Xia's wrist; beneath the red string she deliberately exposed, there was a patch of skin the size of a watch with uneven color.
Those are marks left from wearing gloves for a long time.
"It's just a small thing."
I lowered my voice: "There's a magnet at the end of the pen, and a remote control is hidden under the porcelain plate."
Before she could finish speaking, the girl with pigtails moved her pen again.
The lines drawn this time were much smoother than before, and the character "是" was circled three times.
Xia breathed a sigh of relief, and the extinguished candle suddenly reignited.
And I could clearly see that her right thumb, hidden under her Taoist robe, was quietly moving away from the remote control button.
"I... will I be able to pass the exam?"
The girl with pigtails cried as she clutched her skirt, dark sweat stains appearing on her knees.
The red pen paused for three seconds, then suddenly turned to the word "Yes".
The pen tip struck the paper heavily, almost tearing it apart.
At the same time, the coins in the porcelain plate shook violently.
It stood up with a clatter, spun around on the table, leaving afterimages, and finally fell down with a thud, face up.
The coin has a small "吉" (ji) character engraved on its edge, as if it were carved by hand with a knife.
"Congratulations."
Xia put away the pocket watch and said calmly, "The Immortal Master has given his permission."
Half a minute later, the girl with pigtails was still in a daze.
"Qianqian, are you alright?"
The pink-haired girl touched Qianqian's arm with her hand.
Qianqian suddenly cried out and jumped up from her seat.
"There was something just now..."
She suddenly pointed under the table: "Something brushed against my foot! It was icy cold, like...like a human hand!"
Upon hearing this, both the pink-haired girl and Xiaoyue immediately lowered their heads.
I also subconsciously looked down at the area under the table.
A dark gray object was seen rapidly shrinking towards the corner from the shadows under the table, moving at a speed unlike that of a human.
Xiaoyue gripped my wrist tightly, her nails digging into my flesh, her voice trembling with tears: "Master... is that...?"
I shook my head.
Neither of them noticed, but I did. The dark shape was actually an old rag with a fishing line wrapped around one corner, the end of which was hidden in the folds of Xia's Taoist robe.
"Silence!"
Xia suddenly flung her sleeve: "The Immortal Master has not left yet, stop talking nonsense!"
Just as I was about to speak, Xia suddenly approached, the musty smell from her Taoist robe mixed with cheap perfume hitting me: "Next, who's next?"
The pink-haired girl shrank back, her silver-gray nails scraping against the tablecloth: "I...I'm not playing anymore..."
She turned to look at Xiaoyue, who shook her head frantically.
Xia slammed her wooden sword heavily on the table, making the coins in the porcelain plate jump up: "Don't you want to play?"
Her sleeve slipped down, revealing canine teeth strung on a red string around her wrist, gleaming yellowish-green in the candlelight: "If none of you want to play, then let's send the Immortal Master away?"
"I'll do it."
I pressed down on Xiaoyue's trembling shoulders and took half a step forward: "I want to ask about my fortune."
Xia raised an eyebrow, brandishing her wooden sword in front of me: "Grandpa, what do you want to ask? Fortune?"
Xia thought she had misheard.
