The little girl got arrested?
Upon hearing this news, I couldn't sit still any longer and ran outside while putting on my pants.
The little girl is indeed a white fox in human form, but she is simple-minded and no match for Old Madam Sun.
But when I got to Grandma Sun's house, I found that no one was watching.
Grandma Sun's door was half-open, and through the crack in the door you could see her squatting on the ground picking corn.
Apart from her, all the paper figures in the courtyard had disappeared.
Looking at the corner of the wall, [Ghost Incense] had indeed been completely stripped bare.
After hesitating for a moment, I ultimately decided not to force my way in.
I asked Xiaomi if she personally witnessed the child being arrested.
No, not at all.
Xiaomi shook her head and said that it was a mess outside. She and Sister Yunwei came out to ask and found out that Grandma Sun's things had been stolen and a child had been caught, but they didn't know whose child it was.
This is going to be difficult.
I thought to myself, if Xiaomi saw someone being arrested with her own eyes, I would risk my life to break into Grandma Sun's house and rescue them.
But in this situation, I haven't even seen a glimpse of her. What should I say if I barge in rashly?
Are you suggesting I just open my mouth and yell, "Give the little girl back?"
There's absolutely no evidence to back it up!
If Grandma Sun turns around and accuses me of trespassing, I won't be able to defend myself.
I asked her, "Where's your sister Yunwei? I haven't seen her since this morning?"
"She went to watch the excitement."
Xiaomi didn't even look up, fiddling with her phone and checking her browsing history, trying to see what I'd done with her phone last night.
"Watching the show?"
Xiaomi stopped what she was doing, looked up at me, and explained.
"It wasn't just about watching the excitement. Apparently, this morning an old man was herding cattle when he saw an old woman lying at the foot of the mountain. When he got closer, he found she was already dead. The news spread quickly throughout the village, and many people went to the old woman's house."
"old lady?"
My heart skipped a beat, and an ominous premonition arose within me.
I quickly asked her, "Do you know what this old lady's name is?"
"How would I know?"
Xiaomi rolled her eyes, tilted her head and thought for a while, then said, "I heard Sister Yunwei say that her name is something like Grandma Mei!"
Lingmei is dead?
Just then, out of the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of two elderly women carrying incense and candles, hurrying off in one direction.
I quickly walked a few steps to catch up, and with a big smile on my face, I grabbed one of the older women and asked her politely.
"Auntie, I have something to ask you. I heard someone died in the village?"
The woman on the left is slightly plump, with a round face that glows with a healthy rosy hue. Her cheekbones are a bit high, and her small eyes reveal a shrewdness. Her lips are thin, and she looks like the kind of person who can't keep a secret and loves to chat.
The older woman on the right is a bit thin and is also quite old, with a face full of wrinkles, but her eyes are still bright and piercing.
The two older women first looked me up and down, and then the plump woman on the left spoke in a thick Northeastern accent.
"The one who had the accident was Sister Mei. When Sister Mei went to the mountains to collect herbs, she somehow rolled down the mountain. I heard that Old Zhang found her while herding cattle. By the time everyone arrived, she was already dead."
Another thin old woman chimed in.
"Sister Mei was such a good person. She would always run around helping out whenever there was a wedding or funeral in the village. She would also help deal with any strange occurrences in the village. She was so kind-hearted. It's such a pity that she had to have such an accident."
I was extremely anxious, and then asked, "Auntie, do you know when this happened?"
The thin old woman frowned and recalled for a moment, then said, "It seems to have been last night. I heard from Old Zhang that when he passed by there this morning, he got an erection."
last night?
The little maid didn't come last night, the [ghost incense] at Grandma Sun's house was pulled out, and Lingmei also died last night.
What exactly happened last night?
Perhaps noticing my pale complexion, the plump older woman asked me with concern if something was wrong and suggested I get a doctor to take a look.
I forced a smile and said I was fine, maybe the sun was making me a little dizzy.
After the two older women had walked away, Xiaomi looked at me with concern: "Chen Yan, you look really pale. Don't force yourself. Are you really alright? Why don't we go back and rest?"
I forced a smile and said it was nothing, why don't we go and take a look?
Xiaomi is a restless person, so he agreed without even thinking about it.
When we arrived, the dilapidated little courtyard was already packed with people.
The villagers gathered in groups of three or five, whispering among themselves.
"This is too sudden. Sister Mei is usually very healthy. How could she have rolled down the mountain?" A middle-aged man said with a frown.
"Yes, and she knows this mountain very well. She can walk faster than me even with her eyes closed. How could such an accident happen?"
"After all, he's quite old, over ninety years old. It rained a few days ago, and the mountain road was difficult to walk on... It's such a pity."
I looked around but didn't see the little girl; instead, I saw Yunwei.
The girl's eyes were red from crying, and she was talking to a few other girls her age next to her.
Not far away, I saw Grandma Sun there, choosing incense sticks with several other elderly people.
Strange, when we arrived, this old lady was still at home picking corn, how did she get here faster than us?
Seeing me looking at her, Grandma Sun raised her head and smiled at me.
I ignored her. Through the gaps in the crowd, I saw Lingmei's body lying in the center of the house, covered with a white sheet.
