After hanging up the phone, I looked at the pile of [Ghost Incense] lying quietly on the table and felt a chill run from the soles of my feet to my heart.
Is this little girl trying to harm me?
But when I think of her innocent and naive appearance, I just can't connect the idea that she wanted to harm me.
Judging from her expression, she probably didn't know that this was used to attract ghosts.
When she comes next time, I'll have to ask her properly where she got it from.
If possible, we should try to eradicate it.
Otherwise, when I get back, I don't know how many people will suffer.
Since there were no pomelos in the house, I found some mugwort, boiled it to make water for washing my hands, and then hung the mugwort on the door for use.
Nothing happened that night.
When I woke up the next day, I found that Xiaomi and Yunwei were already up.
The two women were facing each other, heads together, seemingly talking to each other.
The moment Xiaomi saw me, her smile vanished instantly. She let out a disgruntled snort, her eyes practically overflowing with dissatisfaction.
I knew in my heart that she was still angry about me testing Yunwei yesterday.
After finishing her meal, Yunwei hurriedly went out.
They said the older brother next door wasn't there yesterday, so he couldn't go to town.
Today, my older brother happens to be here, so I can ride his motorcycle to town and see if I can ask someone to come back and help Grandpa Jin.
Only Xiaomi and I were left in the room, along with Uncle Jia, who was in a semi-comatose state.
It took us a lot of effort to force-feed some traditional Chinese medicine to Master Jia.
Seeing that Yunwei hadn't returned, Xiaomi wandered around the house aimlessly for a while. Suddenly, her eyes lit up, and she said that she was bored staying at home all the time, so she suggested that they go for a walk in the village.
I asked you, "Are you not angry with me anymore?"
"Just tell me if you're going or not. If you go, I'll tell you the password to the hidden photo album on my phone!" Xiaomi said impatiently.
I thought about it and, since there was nothing urgent, I nodded in agreement.
As for photo albums and such, am I that kind of person?
We walked slowly along the paths in the village.
Wildflowers bloom freely by the roadside, and occasionally a few butterflies flutter among the flowers. If it weren't for those strange things, the scene would be quite pleasant.
As they were walking, Xiaomi suddenly stopped, staring intently at the farmland ahead, and said in surprise.
"Chen Yan, look at that person. Why is he wearing all red clothes to work in the fields?"
I looked in the direction she pointed and saw a man in red clothes bending over, busy in the field.
My heart tightened, and I lowered my voice and said, "Those are the paper figures from Grandma Sun's house."
"A paper doll? No way!"
Xiaomi looked completely incredulous.
I guess she remembered what I did to Yunwei yesterday, and suddenly got angry.
"Don't make wild guesses again. Yesterday you even suspected that Sister Yunwei was a paper doll, and look what happened."
As she spoke, she walked directly toward the man in red.
I realized it was too late to stop them, so I could only stand there and wait.
Fortunately, Xiaomi returned after exchanging a few words with that man.
"They're not paper figures at all."
Xiaomi looked at him with disdain: "He's so enthusiastic. He even said that if we need any help, we should just go to him. He even invited us to his house for dinner. You're just being paranoid."
I told you to go up and say hello again now.
Xiaomi looked at me with a puzzled expression and asked me why.
I told you you'd see when you got there.
Xiaomi said "crazy," but still went over there.
After a while, Xiaomi returned with a frown, muttering to herself.
"This person is really strange."
I said, "Did he repeat what he said before?"
Xiaomi was stunned, her face full of shock.
"Yeah, how did you know?"
I told him that if he still didn't believe me, he could try again, but he just kept saying the same thing.
Xiaomi looked at me, then turned to look at the man in red, her face turning very ugly.
"Is it really a paper figure? But how can a paper figure look like a normal person?"
Seeing her worldview crumble, I sighed and said, "Now you understand why I tested Yunwei yesterday, right?"
As we were talking, I glanced up and realized that we were almost at Grandma Sun's house.
It was then that I remembered that the first time I came to Grandma Sun's house, I first saw a man in red clothes doing farm work in the field before I went to her house.
Just as I was about to turn and leave, I caught a glimpse of Grandma Sun coming out of the house with a winnowing basket out of the corner of my eye.
The winnowing basket contained [Ghost Incense].
Noticing my gaze, Grandma Sun also looked up and looked in our direction.
He gave us a friendly smile.
But for some reason, under the bright sun, I felt an indescribable chill in that smile.
...
When they got back, Xiaomi didn't say a word, her head down, and it was unclear what she was thinking.
As they were about to arrive at Yunwei's house, she suddenly asked a seemingly random question: "Chen Yan, do you think a paper figure can come back to life after it dies?"
I hesitated for a moment, then said no.
Xiaomi said "oh" and didn't ask any more questions.
It's really baffling.
Around 5 p.m., Yunwei returned, accompanied by a doctor in a white coat.
After examining Master Jia's condition, the doctor immediately issued a critical condition notice, telling us to prepare for the worst, as the old man only had two days left.
That night, Xiaomi slept in the same room as Yunwu, while I waited for the little girl in my room.
