In an instant, the air inside the elevator seemed to freeze.
Su Mingyang's body tensed instantly, like a bowstring.
I saw that half of the stick was sticking out of his sleeve, so I quickly stepped forward to block it with my body, afraid that the thugs would notice.
Because I realized that none of these thugs were people we had seen before, and judging from their appearance, they seemed to just be planning to take the elevator and had no intention of deliberately causing us trouble.
The elevator doors opened, and the thugs swarmed inside.
Su Mingyang and I walked cautiously outside with our heads down, wanting only to leave this place of trouble as soon as possible.
But as soon as I stepped out of the elevator, a loud shout came from behind me: "Stop!"
Su Mingyang's body tensed instantly.
I calmly turned around and looked at those people.
"Dude, you dropped something!" one of the thugs pointed to the ground.
I looked down and my heart skipped a beat.
I guess the elevator was too crowded just now, and it squeezed out the heart of the fat landlady who was wrapped in a cloth in my pocket.
I had just taken a step forward when the thug bent down, picked up the cloth bag, and opened it.
"Holy crap!"
The thug exclaimed, "Dude, you're something else! Bringing a pig's heart to the hospital to see a patient. I've seen people bring milk, but I've never seen anyone bring a live pig's heart to see a patient."
His companions, upon hearing this, also curiously gathered around to look.
Afraid they would notice something was amiss, I quickly stepped forward, snatched the cloth bag from them, and said thank you.
Only after those people took the elevator down did Su Mingyang breathe a sigh of relief and wipe the cold sweat from his forehead.
"Damn, I was so nervous just now, my palms were sweaty."
As he spoke, he leaned closer and glanced at the cloth bag in my hand: "Old Chen, when did you buy these pig hearts? After we finish watching Old Jin's show, I'll go get a couple of ounces of liquor and show you my skills tonight. Let me tell you, my stir-fried pig hearts are absolutely amazing, so delicious, one bite is all you need!"
I ignored him and put the heart back in my pocket.
Before entering the ward, I didn't open the door immediately. Instead, I looked through the small window in the door and saw that only Mr. Jin was there before pushing the door open and going in.
Jin was in a double room, but the other bed was empty; I don't know if he went for a checkup.
Jin was taken aback when he heard my and Su Mingyang's voices.
"Why are you two losers here again? Didn't I already make it clear to you on the phone before that we should go our separate ways and have nothing to do with each other from now on?"
Seeing this, Su Mingyang quickly stepped forward with a smile: "Master Jin, look at what you're saying. Without you, we're like a lone boat lost in the vast ocean, only able to rely on you as a guiding light."
Jin waved his hand: "Come on, your brother already said that, not a single word is different!"
Su Mingyang turned his head: "Old Chen, did you say that?"
I nodded. It seems we've both been reading the same book on high emotional intelligence copywriting.
"Alright, stop talking nonsense. Speak your mind!" Jin Ye said impatiently.
I wanted to show him the photos, but then I remembered he was blind, so I asked him instead, "Uncle Jin, does Sister Wu know my grandfather?"
Jin Ye paused for a moment, then asked, "Why are you asking this?"
I told them about finding the photos at Niu Hongsheng's house.
Before Jin Ye could react, Su Mingyang exclaimed in surprise, "Holy crap, is that really creepy-looking old man in the photo your grandfather?"
I ignored him and waited for Jin Ye's reply.
After a moment of silence, Jin slowly spoke: "I do know that Chen Laogou and Xiao Wu know each other. Xiao Wu's grandfather used to be a very famous feng shui master, and he had a good relationship with Chen Laogou. Later, the two had a falling out."
"Why did you fall out?" Su Mingyang pressed.
I've discovered that this guy is just a mouth double; with him around, I basically don't have to say a word.
Jin sighed and said, "That was many years ago. I only heard that Chen Laogou wanted to set up a formation and needed Xiao Wu's grandfather to help set up a feng shui layout, but for some reason they quarreled and never spoke to each other again."
Now I get particularly sensitive to the word "array" and it suddenly reminded me of the "Yinling Trapping Array" in Bincheng Building.
Before I could even ask about it, Jin said to himself, "It's understandable that Xiao Wu and Chen Laogou are in the photo, but there are three more young people in it, which is a bit suspicious."
"What do you mean?" Su Mingyang asked impatiently.
"Think about it!"
Jin stroked his chin: "There are five people in the photo. Let's exclude the one we don't know. The other three are dead, and one is missing. What do they have in common?"
Su Mingyang gasped: "Death photos! Everyone who had their photos taken is dead!"
I frowned and said, "Mr. Jin, do you mean that they all very likely went to Rabbit Ear Village?"
Jin nodded: "Based on the current clues, that's the case."
"That's not right!"
Su Mingyang interrupted, "Old Chen said his grandfather died many years ago, while Niu Hongsheng and Bai Su died recently after going to Rabbit Ear Village. The timelines don't match up. Is there some mistake?"
That's what I wanted to ask too.
Mr. Jin said irritably, "Am I an encyclopedia? Why do you ask me everything? Did I say they took the photos on the same day? Couldn't they have gone one after the other?"
We discussed it further, but we still couldn't come up with any results.
The only consensus reached was: if you want to know the truth, go to Rabbit Ear Village.
Jin yawned and gave them the order to leave: "Alright, I'm sleepy. I've told you everything I know. Don't come again! Don't let Zeng, the richest man, misunderstand that we're in cahoots. My old bones can't take any more trouble."
