Is Master Jin dead?
I was still immersed in Jin Ye's shocking remarks, but this sudden news has thrown me into disarray.
"What did you say?"
Luo Tianhe grabbed the bear by the collar, his voice rising involuntarily.
I stood there, stunned, my mind blank. A few seconds later, I snapped out of my daze and rushed into the house with Luo Tianhe.
Upon entering the room, one could see Grandpa Jin lying stiffly on the bed.
I quickly stepped forward and reached out to check his breath, but all I felt was cold air; there was no breath flowing.
I quickly placed my fingers on his carotid artery and held my breath to feel it.
For a long time, I did not feel that faint heartbeat.
"He's not breathing, there's no pulse in his carotid artery, and his pupils are dilated and fixed. He's definitely dead."
My years of experience at the funeral home have enabled me to make quick and professional judgments.
Luo Tianhe turned to look at Da Xiong with a suspicious expression and questioned, "How did this old man suddenly die? What did you do to him?"
Upon hearing this, the bear stamped its feet in distress and cried out loudly that it was wronged.
"Boss, I really didn't do anything! I just threw two punches. After the first punch, he was yelling and screaming, but after the second punch, the old guy suddenly stopped making a sound."
"At first, I thought he was tough and trying to act tough, so I punched him a couple more times. But he still didn't move, so I went over to take a closer look and found that he was already dead!"
Big Bear looked aggrieved.
I sighed helplessly and checked again to make sure that Jin Ye had stopped breathing and his heart had stopped beating.
"He is indeed dead. He's not breathing anymore, and his heart has stopped beating."
Luo Tianhe frowned, pacing back and forth in the room, muttering, "How could that old guy suddenly die? Could he be faking it? He was so energetic before, how could he die so easily?"
As he spoke, he walked to the bedside and shook Jin Ye's body vigorously.
But Jinye's body was like a stiff puppet, showing no reaction whatsoever.
Luo Tianhe was still unwilling to give up. He picked up a lighter from the table next to him, lit it, and brought it close to Jin Ye's finger, the flame licking Jin Ye's skin.
Soon, his skin turned slightly yellow from the heat, but Jinye remained completely still.
Immediately afterwards, Luo Tianhe picked up a pair of pliers, a hint of ruthlessness in his eyes, and walked straight to Jin Ye's bedside. He placed the pliers on Jin Ye's only remaining 'lychee' and pretended to cut it off.
Seeing this, I quickly stepped forward to stop him, saying, "The person is dead, there's no need for this."
Luo Tianhe clicked his tongue, looking unwilling, and said, "I feel like something's not right. How could this old guy just die like that? I have to see if he was faking it."
After a moment of silence, I said, "Let's not worry about him for now. Since he's dead, let's go take care of our business first. Let's go to my grandfather's grave and see if we can find any clues."
Luo Tianhe nodded in agreement.
I had Da Xiong guard Jin Ye's body while Luo Tianhe and I hurriedly drove towards my grandfather's grave.
The atmosphere was unusually oppressive the whole way. Neither of us spoke, each lost in our own thoughts.
Although I haven't been back for many years, I still remember where my grandfather's grave is.
However, when we arrived at my grandfather's grave, the scene before us made us feel as if we had fallen into an ice cave.
The once flat cemetery was now being ransacked, with the soil being turned upside down and Grandpa's grave being dug up.
The open tomb was like a giant black hole.
Luo Tianhe's eyes widened, and he turned to look at me with disbelief on his face, his tone tinged with uncertainty: "Old Chen, you... you must have remembered the wrong place?"
I stood there, frozen, my mind blank, my eyes fixed on the damaged grave. After a long while, I managed to squeeze out a single sentence.
"Impossible! How could I be wrong? This is the place!"
Luo Tianhe squatted down, grabbed a handful of soil from the grave, and brought it to his nose to smell it in a very professional manner.
"The soil is still a bit damp and not completely dried. In my opinion, the grave was recently dug up. Look, there are still fresh shoe prints here."
He pointed to the side.
Several deep shoe prints were clearly imprinted on the soft soil, and the patterns of the prints were still very clear, indicating that they had been made recently.
We carefully followed the direction of the footprints.
However, when we chased the footprints to a small ditch overgrown with weeds, they disappeared without warning.
"Think carefully, who else would dig up your grandfather's grave? Could it be Wu Zhiguo!"
Luo Tianhe turned to look at me.
Wu Zhiguo?
If it were Wu Zhiguo, he would have dug up the grave long ago.
No, there's one more person!
I said to Luo Tianhe, "Quick, call Da Xiong!"
Luo Tianhe said, "Impossible," but still quickly took out his phone and dialed Da Xiong's number.
We stood quietly by the river, the only sound the beeping from Luo Tianhe's phone was particularly jarring in the deathly silence.
One second, two seconds... Time seemed to stretch on endlessly, but no one answered the phone.
Luo Tianhe's face grew increasingly gloomy, and the veins on his forehead bulged.
He kept redialing the phone, but there was still no response.
"damn it!"
Luo Tianhe finally lost his temper and slammed the phone to the ground. The phone shattered into pieces, with parts scattered all over the floor.
"We can't get through to Big Bear on the phone, something must have happened!"
"We've been fooled by that old bastard Jin again! He's not dead at all; he must have used some kind of sorcery to escape!"
