My heart sank; I realized I might have been tricked.
This game could never be fair from the start.
I was overthinking it. How could a ghost play games with me like that?
By the way, Luo Tianhe hasn't been caught yet!
My mind raced, trying to come up with some excuse to keep her occupied.
I deliberately pretended to be unconvinced:
"This isn't fair. Wasn't it agreed that we couldn't use ghost abilities? And how can a normal person smell the scent of a living person?"
Upon hearing my words, the girl's face turned extremely pale. She leaned closer to me.
That's when I realized that the girl didn't have a tongue in her mouth, but only a piece of something that looked like charcoal, which moved as she spoke.
"What are you talking about? This is just a very ordinary ability, like being able to see things."
Suddenly, my body trembled violently.
I've said too much already. When dealing with ghosts that can communicate, it's best not to reveal their ghost identity.
What I just said has undoubtedly crossed the line.
I glanced at my phone casually and saw that eight minutes had passed. There were two minutes left, and Luo Tianhe would win.
I immediately breathed a sigh of relief and said to her:
"You're right, I misunderstood you just now."
"That's good. I thought you were going to break the rules."
The girl's expression suddenly changed, revealing an innocent smile.
But the smile on her terrifying face created a stark contrast.
I wanted to say something more to her, to buy myself the last two minutes, but she suddenly exclaimed in surprise.
"You've already lost. Now I'm going to find the last one."
She finally realized that there was still one person she hadn't found, but there was only one minute left.
It takes more than half a minute just to walk from here to the corridor. Even if she could smell the scent of a living person, it would be impossible for her to catch Luo Tianhe in just one minute using conventional methods!
But the next moment, she stared intently at me, observing my confident expression, and spoke in a sinister tone:
"You seem to think I'm 100% going to lose the game?"
She had barely finished speaking when she raised the doll in her hand.
At that moment, I was horrified to discover that the doll had now transformed back into Luo Tianhe's appearance!
She violently tugged at the doll's legs, making it look like it was running.
Then I heard sounds of running and screaming coming from the corridor.
The next moment, Luo Tianhe appeared in front of me with a terrified look on his face.
The girl smiled happily.
"You've been found too, you've lost."
My face turned ashen instantly. This female ghost was no longer going to act!
Luo Tianhe couldn't even stand properly before he plopped down on the ground.
His gaze was fixed intently on the girl:
"Didn't we agree not to use this ability?"
The girl ignored Luo Tianhe's words.
She casually plucked a strand of hair and stuffed it into the mouth of the doll in her hand.
Immediately, Luo Tianhe let out a sobbing sound.
He clutched his neck, desperately trying to vomit something, but nothing came out.
"What do you think? Did I win this round?"
The girl looked at me and spoke in a sinister tone.
Hearing this, Luo Tiange became even angrier. He opened his mouth wide and reached into it, but still couldn't pull anything out.
"Yes, you won this round, but according to the rules of the game, there should be a next round. It's your turn to hide and let us find you."
I said in a somber tone.
Upon hearing my words, the girl giggled, the laughter echoing in the deathly silent stairwell, creating an eerie atmosphere.
"You're the first person to ask me to play a second round."
The girl spoke in an extremely cold voice.
"Okay, I'll hide now. I still have ten minutes, and I can only stay in the main building and the front yard."
After saying that, she seemed to melt away, turning into thick, yellowish-brown corpse oil that seeped into the floor and disappeared.
The moment he disappeared, Luo Tianhe finally returned to normal.
He collapsed to the ground, panting heavily.
After a moment, he finally revealed an angry expression:
"That damn thing doesn't follow the rules at all! My legs suddenly went out of my control!"
I said, somewhat helplessly, my voice weak and listless:
"You were right from the beginning, we shouldn't have played games with that ghost."
"Then why are you even having a second round?"
Luo Tianhe looked up at me, his eyes full of confusion.
"Idiot, if there's only one round, then we'll just lose!"
"Don't tell her that she used special abilities to capture you; it won't do any good."
"And if you do that, then you either have to follow the rules of the game and obediently accept the punishment for her failure."
“And this kind of punishment is absolutely unacceptable to us! For example, staying here to play games with her for the rest of our lives, or becoming a puppet in her hands.”
"There's only one outcome: we have to confront her head-on! And if there's a second round, we can just ignore her, right?"
After listening to my words, Luo Tianhe looked thoughtful.
But he soon raised his own questions.
"What do you mean, 'Just ignore her, won't she keep bothering us?'"
"I'm starting to wonder if she just stuffed a strand of hair into your mouth or your head!"
I said somewhat indignantly, "Why does Luo Tianhe always make stupid mistakes at crucial moments?"
"She emphasized twice that she can only go to the front and the main building, and not the backyard or the dormitory building. Either she is afraid of those places, or she is a bound spirit, trapped here!"
Hearing me say that, Luo Tianhe finally realized what I meant. He stood up and smiled.
“Chen Yan, you’re right. We’ve searched the main building and the front yard, but there’s no trace of Li Huai. So if he’s in this orphanage, he can only be in the back yard or the dormitory area.”
I nodded, but still cautioned:
"Be careful, the backyard and dormitory area are probably even scarier than this place. It's a bit better if this female ghost is a bound spirit, but if even he is wary of her, then there might be some demons and monsters in a place that even ghosts are wary of!"
Luo Tianhe, however, didn't take it to heart.
"I think you're overthinking it. It's not necessarily that there's something more terrifying behind it. It could be that there's something to counteract it, like a Buddha statue or a formation set up by a master."
"I hope so."
I have nothing to say about Luo Tianhe's assumptions; there's nothing to refute.
But my intuition tells me that the backyard can't possibly be as peaceful as he says.
We quickly passed through the main building and the front yard and arrived at the back yard.
