Xiaomi's back was covered with leeches.
The leeches clung tightly to her skin like a wriggling black blanket.
Its slender body writhed wildly on Xiaomi's back, the slippery mucus on its surface gleaming nauseatingly in the dim light.
Some of the leeches had already burrowed their heads deep into Xiao Mi's skin, greedily sucking her blood, causing blood spots to appear on her back.
In some places, blood had even begun to seep out, the bright red blood mixed with the leech's slime, slowly flowing down her skin.
When Xiaomi saw that we were all staring straight at her back, she was so frightened that her voice became distorted.
"What's going on? Is there something behind me?"
I tried to keep my tone calm, not wanting to add any more stress to her already tense nerves.
"Your back is crawling with leeches."
Upon hearing this, Xiao Mi's face instantly turned pale, and she instinctively raised her hand to slap behind her.
"Don't move!"
Yunwei reacted quickly, grabbing Xiao Mi's hand: "If the head is severed inside, it will be a huge problem. Once infected, it could be fatal!"
He quickly drew a small, gleaming knife from his waist, turned to look at me, and said, "Light it with a lighter."
Yunwei carefully brought the knife close to the flame of the lighter, allowing the blade to be fully heated.
"Without salt and alcohol, you can only burn it off with a knife. It will hurt a bit, so you'll have to bear with it."
When the blade turned slightly red, Yun Wei took a deep breath and slowly brought the scalding blade close to the leech.
Xiao Mi's body tensed instantly, her eyes closed tightly, her teeth clenched, and a look of pain appeared on her face.
The moment the blade touched the leech, the leech seemed to be greatly stimulated, and it began to writhe wildly.
Xiaomi couldn't help but let out a low cry of pain.
As the leech gradually loosened its suckers due to the heat, Yunwei quickly used the tip of her knife to pry it off.
After making sure that no leeches had been missed, Xiao Mi was already lying on the ground in pain, sweat dripping down her slender neck and into her clothes.
After dealing with Xiaomi, Yunwei, without taking a break, turned to me and said, "Take off your clothes too, and check me over."
I did as instructed and took off my clothes, secretly relieved that the disgusting lividity on my body was no longer there.
Otherwise, they would be scared out of their wits.
After I finished dealing with the leeches on my body, I looked at Master Jia, who was wrapped up tightly, and said, "Master Jia, aren't you going to take off your clothes and check yourself?"
Old Master Jia habitually hugged the package in his arms tightly, grinning, "When you get old, your skin becomes thick and tough, unlike your delicate skin. Those leeches don't like to bite me."
I stared at him and looked at him carefully.
It was really strange; there wasn't a single leech on his clothes.
Before we even dealt with it, our pants were covered in leeches, like black "pimples," which was quite a sight. Xiaomi's back was crawling with them. You can imagine what happened. After we finished dealing with everything, we had only been resting for a few minutes when Yunwei kept urging us to leave quickly.
"Get up quickly, we can't stay here too long, we have to get over this mountain."
"Sister Yunwei, let's rest a little longer, I really have no strength left!"
Xiao Mi leaned weakly against a tree, her hair disheveled and her clothes soaked with sweat, looking as if she were about to collapse.
"no!"
Yunwei was adamant, and pulled Xiaomi up, draping a coat over her shoulders.
"Didn't you notice? Before, we could hear insects chirping and see some animals, but now there's not a sound at all."
When Yunwei brought it up, I suddenly realized that the world seemed to have been muted.
quiet!
A deathly silence.
Apart from our slightly heavy breathing, the surroundings were eerily quiet.
Even the howling wind had vanished without a trace, as if it had never existed.
"Yeah, why are there no birdsong anymore?" Xiaomi looked around curiously.
Yunwei gripped the wood-chopping knife tightly in her hand, looking around warily.
"It's an animal's instinct!"
Yun lowered her voice and said solemnly, "In nature, animals are much more sensitive to danger than we humans."
"They sensed danger, so they all hid."
"This means there might be something even more terrifying nearby. We must leave this place as soon as possible, otherwise..."
Before Yunwei could finish speaking, raindrops as large as broad beans began to fall in a rapid, pattering sound. In an instant, shallow puddles formed on the ground, splashing up layers of water.
"Why did this rain come so suddenly!"
I looked up at the sky, and raindrops streamed down my face, blurring my vision.
Xiaomi was also caught off guard by the sudden downpour.
She shielded her eyes with her hand, trying to see her surroundings.
"Why is this rain falling so strangely? There wasn't even a clap of thunder, and there wasn't a single warning sign!"
Yun Wei also frowned, her eyes filled with doubt and confusion.
Strands of her rain-soaked hair clung to her face.
“I’ve lived in these mountains for so many years and I’ve never seen anything like this before.”
She raised her voice so that everyone could hear her through the rain: "This rain is so unpredictable, it just started without warning. We need to find somewhere to take shelter."
Just as everyone was preparing to find shelter from the rain, Master Jia suddenly seemed like a completely different person.
