Geng Xingwei followed Deputy Commander Sun out of the guard barracks. Deputy Commander Sun looked at him and laughed, "Old Geng, you're the one who knows what's good for you. Unlike those roughnecks who are stubborn and can't see things clearly, what difference does it make who you work for? In a few days, when we get to No. 76, they'll know what's what. The people there aren't as easy to talk to as we are here."
Geng Xingwei nodded in agreement, saying, "Who says otherwise! I've tried to persuade them too, but I'm just a nobody, and nobody listens to me. I'm too lazy to say more. Deputy Commander Sun, you'll have to take care of me in the future. When I get to No. 76 and start my own business, we'll still be friends, won't we?"
Listening to Geng Xingwei skillfully making connections, Deputy Commander Sun smiled and nodded. He knew that if these officers were really willing to surrender to the puppet government and join the No. 76 Special Agent Headquarters, they would be much better off than him, a poor soldier. He might actually need their help one day. So, although he was stern in his words, he never dared to mistreat them.
Sun Lianfu looked at Geng Xingwei and continued, "That Director Zhang from No. 76 last time was quite good to you. Before he left, he specifically told us to take care of you. Sigh, could it be that you've already switched sides?"
"Shh..."
Upon hearing this, Geng Xingwei was startled. He quickly put his index finger to his lips to signal Deputy Commander Sun not to raise his voice. He then carefully glanced left and right before feeling relieved.
"Don't tell anyone, I still have to work with these brothers in the future! If they find out I chickened out first, there are a few ruthless ones among them who would dare to stab me in the back, you believe me?"
Geng Xingwei was not a person with a strong will to begin with. He was pulled along by Zhang Jingyao as soon as they met. However, he knew that doing so would be a betrayal. He did not want others to know too early before the situation became clear. Once everyone was in No. 76, it would naturally not be a problem.
Sun Lianfu knew Geng Xingwei's little scheme, and couldn't help but sneer, laughing and cursing, "You're such a cunning little devil!"
The two walked and talked until they arrived at the logistics department. Battalion Commander Gao Yuanwu was already waiting there. When he saw Geng Xingwei arrive, he blinked and said, "What's going on? Why are you waiting so long? Old Geng, take some men and buy some grain today. Here's the purchase order. Go to the Fuxing Grain Store at the east end of the street. They'll tell you what to do. We're buying a lot today, so make sure you keep a good record. You won't be shortchanged when you get back!"
Geng Xingwei smiled and nodded, saying, "Battalion Commander Gao, you can rest assured that I will handle this matter clearly and thoroughly!"
Gao Yuanwu glanced at the clothes he was wearing, frowned, and instructed Deputy Commander Sun: "Change Old Geng into a military uniform, and come back as soon as possible!"
After saying that, he didn't say anything more, waved his hand, turned around and walked away quickly.
Geng Xingwei looked at Gao Yuanwu's back with surprise and asked with some doubt, "When did Battalion Commander Gao start taking charge of logistics?"
Sun Lianfu said impatiently, "Why bother with so much? Just follow orders. Hey! Bring me some braised dishes when you come back, my mouth is so bland."
Geng Xingwei nodded repeatedly in agreement, then changed into the uniform of a pacification army officer before leaving the military camp with a truck and several soldiers.
The vehicle traveled non-stop to a nearby market town. It was nearly noon by then. Geng Xingwei got out of the vehicle, and the other soldiers jumped out as well. Geng Xingwei began purchasing items according to the list, which contained quite a few odds and ends.
Geng Xingwei had no one by his side, and he knew that these soldiers were probably watching him too, but he didn't care, since he had no intention of running away anyway.
Besides, there are military camps all around here. If the garrison is alerted, martial law can be immediately imposed and a search can be conducted. Even if Geng Xingwei wanted to escape, he wouldn't be able to get out.
Before long, he had bought almost everything except for a large quantity of grain. Geng Xingwei followed the street all the way to Fuxing Grain Store at the end of the street.
This grain store was a place where they used to frequently purchase military supplies. When the shopkeeper saw them come in, he quickly came up to greet them and greeted Geng Xingwei.
"Sir, you don't look familiar!"
The grain store manager, with keen insight, handed over a cigarette. Geng Xingwei took it and said with a smile, "Old Chen is sick, I'll take his place this time."
"Alright, alright, then please take good care of me, sir!"
The grain store manager lit a cigarette for Geng Xingwei, casually slipped a pack of cigarettes into Geng Xingwei's pocket, and then gestured for him to enter the store to choose one.
Geng Xingwei was an experienced procurement officer. He went straight to the grain bins, grabbed a handful of rice from each bin, carefully selected it, nodded, and gestured for the soldiers behind him to weigh it. The grain shop manager stepped forward and whispered, "Sir, let's talk inside. The kickback is the same as before. You won't have worked for nothing!"
Geng Xingwei was not surprised. It was normal for the military to inflate prices when purchasing supplies, especially for large-scale transactions, as there were usually kickbacks to be made. Everyone knew this.
Geng Xing smiled knowingly, glanced at the soldiers busy in the front hall, nodded, and followed the grain shop manager into the back hall.
There was a corridor in the back hall, leading to a separate room. The grain shop manager lifted the curtain and went in, followed by Geng Xingwei.
But as soon as he entered the room, he felt a gust of wind behind his head, his whole body shuddered and he lost consciousness, his body going limp and collapsing to the ground.
At this moment, several figures emerged from behind the door. It was Zhou Hao and two team members who attacked Geng Xingwei.
He had already bribed the grain store manager with a large sum of money, as agreed with Gao Yuanwu, and had been hiding in the shadows, waiting for Geng Xingwei to enter the game.
