Chapter 1007 Delayed Halfway

Chai Liang was taken aback. He put his hands to his mouth, breathing on them to warm them, and pretended to persuade him, "Uncle Wan, it's freezing cold, and you're not in good health. What if you catch a cold if you ride in a rickshaw? Besides, Luo Zidong is a junior, so it's only right that he waits for you a little longer. You don't need to put on such a show for him!"

Wan Mulin hesitated for a moment upon hearing this. It was the dead of winter, and he was particularly susceptible to the cold due to his plump body. He hadn't prepared much for his trip today, and his car had broken down here shortly after leaving home, causing such a long delay. He had originally planned to have plenty of time, but now he would definitely be later.

He wasn't anxious about being late for the banquet. Luo Zidong's status and seniority were far inferior to his, and now that Luo Zidong needed his help, it wasn't unreasonable for him to be a little late. Naturally, Luo Zidong didn't dare to say a word.

Since Wan Mulin followed Yue Sheng, he had been Yue Sheng's right-hand man, and he had arranged almost all of Yue Sheng's trivial matters. He had long developed the habit of arranging everything in advance and had a very strong sense of time. He was never late or delayed in dealing with people and handling affairs, and today was no exception.

He couldn't help but raise his hand and point at Chai Liang, saying, "You're just hopeless! You don't put in any effort at all. It's fine to make A Dong wait a while, but he's a meticulous person. He might not say it, but I'm afraid he's unhappy inside. He's in trouble now, and I don't want to put on airs. I just don't want him to overthink things, so I can use him in the future."

Wan Mulin truly lived up to his reputation as Yue Sheng's chief steward. He was adept at reading people and dealing with them, and he had a keen understanding of their thoughts.

Upon hearing this, Chai Liang could only nod in agreement. He glanced at the time, nodded silently, then turned around, placed his hand on the hood, and asked the driver, "How is it? Is it fixed yet?"

The driver looked up at Chai Liang, confirmed his meaning, and then said loudly, "Fourth Brother, it's fixed. I just need to tighten the screws."

Upon hearing this, Wan Mulin nodded and turned to get into the car. He was most afraid of the cold, but even so, the cold wind blowing through the street made his hands and feet feel a little cold.

Just then, a loud explosion came from afar, which they could hear clearly even here. Wan Mulin, who was experienced in many things, immediately changed his expression and said to Chai Liang, "It's the sound of explosives. It's quite a loud noise!"

Chai Liang knew perfectly well that the action team had launched the operation according to the predetermined time. He feigned surprise and said, "It really is the sound of explosives! I heard it every day when I was in the army, there's no mistake!"

Wan Mulin looked up again and asked uncertainly, "A-Si, look at the direction of the explosion, isn't it near the Huijiang Hotel area?"

Chai Liang glanced at it, nodded, and said, "Uncle Wan, it's true. The world is in chaos now, and it's not safe in the concession. Why don't we go back?"

Wan Mulin hesitated for a moment upon hearing this, but having spent many years navigating the world of martial arts, he was not lacking in courage and said dismissively, "This is the French Concession after all. Do you think I'll stay home just because I hear noises at my doorstep? What a joke! Let's get going!"

Seeing Wan Mulin's insistence, Chai Liang shook his head and had no choice but to signal the driver to start the car, which then continued towards the Huijiang Grand Hotel.

The vehicle kept its speed low and didn't move fast. After quite a while, it finally arrived at the street where the Xinjiang Hotel was located. However, as it approached the hotel, it found a large crowd of people crowding around it. Everyone was standing and looking in the direction of the Xinjiang Hotel. The crowd of onlookers completely blocked the street. Even though the driver kept honking the horn, the vehicle still could not move forward.

This was, after all, the French Concession, where people's lives were relatively stable, and they still had a bit of curiosity about these things. If the same situation had happened in downtown Shanghai, the streets would probably have been deserted long ago!

Wan Mulin and the others sat in the car, looking at the crowd around them, feeling quite helpless.

Just then, sirens blared, and patrol officers from all directions arrived, blowing whistles and waving batons to drive everyone aside and clear the way. Soon after, several police cars arrived with sirens blaring and drove directly to the ground floor of the Xinjiang Grand Hotel.

The car doors opened, and the police officers in black jumped out and rushed into the restaurant.
