Chapter 1044 Inescapable Fate

Li Zhiqun had intended to claim all the credit for their previous investigation of Xiao Guoyuan, so he did not inform the Special Higher Police. Therefore, Major Yokota and the others were unaware of it.

"Who is this person?"

Major Yokota looked at the shopkeeper huddled to the side and asked.

Wang Hanmin briefly explained the situation and said, "Just in case, let's take the person back first. If we can't find Ding Mingzhen, then there must be something wrong with this person, and we can then interrogate him."

"Wang Sang, this is your experience!"

Major Yokota couldn't help but give Wang Hanmin a thumbs up. Although he didn't know much about Chinese agents, he had seen the performance of Li Zhiqun and Wang Hanmin over the past few days.

These Chinese agents are meticulous in their work, thoughtful in their planning, and their operational capabilities are not to be underestimated. Major Yokota certainly admires them.

With a wave of his hand, several Special Higher Police agents stepped forward and dragged the shopkeeper out. Everyone else left the shop, and Wang Hanmin ordered the shop door to be closed tightly. The "Closed" sign was not taken down, and personnel were left to keep watch. Only then did the group get into their car and leave.

Meanwhile, at the Penglai Tea House in Ximen District in the northern suburbs, Fu Shengyuan, the stationmaster of Qingdao Station, was at the tea house counter, looking through the tea house's accounts.

This Penglai Tea House is an independent two-story apartment building. The tea house is downstairs, and the living rooms are upstairs. It is actually the office of Qingdao Railway Station.

Despite being called an intelligence agency, it was really just a few people working at the tea shop. Everyone was hiding their identities. Fu Shengyuan, using the alias Cui He, was actually the owner of the tea shop.

In the past few days, Luo Yuze has told Fu Shengyuan not to show his face easily. Luo Yuze has been handling all the work of disrupting the tripartite talks. Fu Shengyuan is happy to have some free time, so he can focus on his tea shop business and hardly ever goes out.

However, it was already late, and Fu Shengyuan saw that there was hardly any business in the tea shop. He looked up at the clock on the wall, turned to the shop assistant beside him, and said, "Old Zhao, it's about time to close up shop!"

Old Zhao nodded in agreement. He knew why the shop had been closing earlier these past few days; everyone had been being extra careful to avoid any mistakes.

After checking the ledgers in his hand, Fu Shengyuan put them in the drawer, turned around and left the counter. He walked a few steps to the stairwell and started climbing the stairs.

He entered his room and saw his wife, Ding Mingzhen, packing clothes. When she saw Fu Shengyuan come in, she put down what she was doing.

Fu Shengyuan stepped forward and glanced at the clothes on the bed. He felt a pang of anxiety. He discovered that the clothes his wife had sorted out were several coats that hadn't been used in a long time, and even some coarse cotton-padded jackets and trousers that rural women used to wear.

"What, are you going out?" Fu Shengyuan asked in a low voice.

They never wear these clothes normally; they're only used for camouflage during operations. But his wife is taking them out from the bottom of the trunk and organizing them. What is she doing?

Seeing Fu Shengyuan's question, Ding Mingzhen had no choice but to nod and say, "I'd like to go to the city tomorrow."

Fu Shengyuan was taken aback. Luo Yuze had specifically instructed that before the operation, personnel at Qingdao Station were strictly prohibited from going out and should reduce their chances of appearing in public. Ding Mingzhen knew this.

Seeing Fu Shengyuan's questioning expression, Ding Mingzhen had no choice but to explain again: "My older brother called earlier and said that Father was in a car accident this morning. I'm really worried about him and want to go to the hospital to see him tomorrow."

Fu Shengyuan was taken aback. He and his wife had been through thick and thin together, and they were deeply in love. He also valued his wife's family very much. He was quite worried about his father-in-law's car accident, so he quickly asked, "How is your father now?"

Ding Mingzhen sighed softly, her face full of worry, and said, "My elder brother said on the phone that Father's life is not in danger, but he has two broken ribs and has lost a lot of blood. He is old, and to suffer such a serious injury is not good."

Fu Shengyuan frowned. As a veteran special agent, he was cautious and suspicious, which made him instinctively suspicious of anything unusual, especially now that it was a special period. Wang Hanmin had come to Qingdao specifically and had even clearly traced the case back to Xiao Guoyuan, so it was clear that his target was the Qingdao station.

Now that my father-in-law has suddenly been in a car accident, could there be some problems?

Thinking of this, he quickly asked, "Has the cause of the car accident been determined? Was it sudden, or was it deliberately caused?"

When Ding Mingzhen heard Fu Shengyuan ask this question, she immediately realized what was going on. After all, she was an intelligence agent who had participated in intelligence work during the Lixingshe period, and her vigilance was no less than Fu Shengyuan's. She had only been confused because of her family member's injury, but now that she heard Fu Shengyuan ask this question, she also felt that something was wrong.

She hesitated for a moment, then said uncertainly, "My older brother said on the phone that the other party's brakes failed, causing the vehicle to go out of control and injure my father. The police have already arrested the person and impounded the car."

Hearing this, Fu Shengyuan felt relieved. The perpetrators and the vehicle had been caught, which meant that the perpetrators had not fled the scene in time and that it was not a premeditated act.

However, he still gently advised, "Mingzhen, these are extraordinary times. Luo Yuze has strictly ordered all personnel at the Qingdao station not to leave without authorization. Military orders are absolute, and neither you nor I can be an exception. Besides, Father's condition is relatively stable. You should visit him after the operation is completed!"

Upon hearing this, Ding Mingzhen opened her mouth, then sadly put down the clothes in her hands and said helplessly, "If the operation is successful, Qingdao will definitely be under martial law, and I won't be able to go then. Sigh..."

Despite her reluctance, Ding Mingzhen knew that the Military Intelligence Bureau had strict military laws, and if something went wrong and affected the operation, not only would she be severely punished, but her husband would also be severely punished.
