In the office of the section chief at the Shanghai Special Higher Education Department, Section Chief Taro Sagawa sat wearily in a chair, looking at the documents in his hands.
Yuji Imai, standing to the side, looked at him with concern and asked softly, "Section Chief, how did this meeting go? What did General Uehara mean?"
Sagawa Taro sighed softly, losing all interest in looking at the documents. He loosened his grip and tossed the documents onto his desk, his mind replaying the scene from his meeting with General Uehara Junpei, the military's intelligence chief, earlier that day.
After a long pause, he finally spoke: "So far, the situation is alright. This Hangzhou incident was the most serious failure our intelligence department has suffered in decades, and the impact was too great. The military will definitely investigate. Fortunately, General Uehara was willing to speak up for us, but the outcome is still unknown. Luckily, you reminded me to take action against the Chinese agents in advance. Without this operation, we would be facing the same fate as Murakami Keita!"
Upon hearing this, Yuji Imai secretly breathed a sigh of relief. As long as they weren't punished immediately, things would improve once the storm passed. Even being demoted would be better than committing seppuku.
Yuji Imai reported: "Of the Chinese agents we captured, one resisted fiercely and attacked the guards, and was shot dead on the spot. The other three have already spoken. I have now arranged for them to stay with Yu Li at several checkpoints to identify the military intelligence station's agents from the shadows."
Taro Sagawa nodded and said, "That's the only way. But the Chinese intelligence agencies aren't stupid. They won't take any risks at this time. You need to protect them to prevent the Chinese intelligence agencies from eliminating them."
Yuji Imai nodded in agreement, "Please rest assured, Section Chief. I will arrange enough people to protect them. No matter how many people they send, they will be walking into a trap. They are currently stationed in that large courtyard nearby, where security is tight. There will be absolutely no problems!"
Hearing Yuji Imai's words, Taro Sagawa felt relieved. He knew about that large compound; it was quite spacious and well-equipped. It was a safe house specially used by the Special Higher Police to house important figures. Yuji Imai's arrangements were already very meticulous.
He reiterated, "Others are fine, but we must protect Yu Li, treat him well, and manage our relationship with him properly. We must make him understand that we are his true friends, that he is the highest-ranking Chinese agent we have recruited, and that we plan to make him a symbol of our cause to curb the increasingly arrogant behavior of Chinese agents."
“Yes, I will definitely pay special attention to his safety,” Yuji Imai quickly replied.
"What's the current situation with the infiltrators in the military intelligence station?" Sagawa Taro asked. This plan was originally designed and led by Imai Yuji, and the results were remarkable. In this critical moment, it even saved their lives. Sagawa Taro attached great importance to this plan.
"This operation has caused the Chinese to suffer a great loss. They will definitely focus their attention on Shanghai. I estimate that their Nanjing headquarters will send people to supervise their work and have our insiders pay attention to collecting intelligence in this regard."
Yuji Imai replied, "Everything is normal for now. I will have them pay attention to gathering intelligence in this area. However, I suggest that there should be no major actions in the short term. The military intelligence station will definitely increase its internal screening efforts now, and their situation is also very dangerous."
Sagawa Taro nodded and said, "You can arrange these matters. We need to make sure there are no mistakes during this period, otherwise, Imai-kun, our future will be in jeopardy!"
"Yes, sir!" Yuji Imai bowed and replied.
Ning Zhiheng returned to his residence, and just as he was about to open the courtyard gate, the door of the Yoshimura family's house next door opened, and a figure walked out.
"Fujiwara-kun, did you just get back? You must have had a hard day!" A gentle voice called out.
Ning Zhiheng was startled when he heard the voice and quickly turned around to see Kumiko Yoshimura standing at the door.
He smiled and asked, "Oh, it's Kumiko! I just had a drink, so I'm a little late getting back!"
“Drinking on an empty stomach makes you get drunk easily, so I’ve prepared a late-night snack. Please come and have a taste,” Kumiko said with a smile.
Ning Zhiheng had something on his mind, so he forgot to eat dinner and was actually quite hungry. Hearing Kumiko's words made him even hungrier, so he smiled and said, "Then I'll have to trouble you. I've been so busy drinking that I haven't eaten. I'll just have to try Kumiko's cooking."
So he turned around and stepped into the Yoshimura family's yard. In fact, Kumiko had already prepared a delicate late-night snack for Ning Zhiheng's return. As soon as Ning Zhiheng entered the dining room, he saw several exquisite pastries already placed on the table.
Ning Zhiheng said with a smile, "Kumiko is really skillful; the desserts she makes look so appetizing."
After saying that, Ning Zhiheng sat down cross-legged and, without any hesitation, picked up his chopsticks and began to eat.
Kumiko sat opposite him with a smile, watching Ning Zhiheng wolf down the snacks she had made herself, and felt extremely happy.
"Fujiwara-kun, eat slowly. This is hot tea. Take a sip, don't choke!" Kumiko gently reminded Ning Zhiheng.
Kumiko's cooking skills were indeed excellent, and Ning Zhiheng was quite hungry, so in no time they devoured all the pastries on the table.
Sipping his hot tea, Ning Zhiheng couldn't help but exclaim with satisfaction, "Kumiko's cooking is truly superb! I finished it all without even realizing it, how rude of me!"
Kumiko covered her mouth with her hand and chuckled, looking at Ning Zhiheng and saying, "It's all my fault, I didn't make enough. I'll prepare more tomorrow."
